In that case, no holding action. Valerian will just move towards Seraphine, get side by side and attacks the mantis with his rapier. (If a 14 hits, 10 damage)
So sorry, Valerian, but your attack is at disadvantage as the tall, thin, lithe mantis is attempting to dodge. I'll take the liberty of rolling your other attack roll. I got a 22, so the 14 to hit stays, and that's good enough for a hit!
Valerian's rapier pierces into the mantis' armor and he deals a big blow to the creature! It turns its wedge-shaped head to regard you more intently. It's mouth parts wiggle inscrutibly.
Seraphine stands her ground, her dark robes over her scale mail billowing slightly in the breeze, as the giant mantis looms before her. The creature’s serrated forelegs twitch menacingly, its beady eyes locked onto her with predatory intent. Nearby, her three companions—Valerian, Finn, and Aralin—circle the beast, weapons drawn, ready to strike. The air is thick with tension, each of them poised to act, knowing the creature’s deadly speed could turn the tide of battle in an instant.
Seraphine remains calm amidst the chaos, her eyes narrowing in focus as she watches the creature, waiting for the perfect moment. She knows that she could end this, but she must make physical contact with the beast, channeling her dark magic directly into its body. As the mantis rears back, preparing to strike with its deadly forelegs, Seraphine’s patiently waits for the deadly strike, ready to intercept the attack motion. Her blood is boiling under her skin, blood magic readied to be unleashed only waiting for the point of contact.
Action: ready spell attack, Inflict Wounds. To be delivered when the mantis begins the attack motion (that is ideally before the mantis’ attack is rolled but after it is declared. As with a readied spell, the spell is lost if the trigger doesn’t come to fruition. The idea is that dodge will be expired during the mantis’ turn.). Hit and damage in spoiler below.
Hit: 16 (if it doesn’t hit, she’d use her inspiration for a reroll: 25) Damage: 13 (if it is a critical, add 4)
Hit: 14 (if it doesn’t hit, she’d use her inspiration for a reroll: 25) Damage: 9 (if it is a critical, add 9)
( OOC: I hate it when the dice roller acts out, but I wanted to roll after posting. I keep the rolls in a quote, because in my experience they can just get scrambled at any time. I also just realised that I rolled only one die of damage instead of three... You can easily check that if you check my posting history, the relevant post says 1d10+3 but should be 3d10+3. Please find the missing rolls in the spoiler below. )
additional normal damage: 13 additional critical hit damage if relevant: 15
Showing incredible poise and concentration, Seraphine is able to duck under the mantis' sudden lightning-quick strike and jab her hands onto its thorax. Necrotic energy flows from her hands into the insect, doing untold damage to its innards. The firm exoskeleton keeps its form, hiding the internal damage, but clearly the spell was effective as the mantis gives a shiver and then keels over, like a toppled statue, its chitinous form holding it frozen in its last pose, which is with its razor arms outstretched, but grabbing only air.
The fight is won! Ok to drop initiative turns.
[ Exp is being calculated. You are on track to achieve level 2 by the end of the in-world day ]
As the mantis collapses, Seraphine remains frozen, her hands still on its lifeless thorax. The necrotic energy she unleashed has drained her, leaving her breathless and exhausted. The sight of the creature's motionless form brings relief, but also a strange emptiness. She stays in place, trying to steady herself, her fingers trembling as she pulls back. The battle is won, but Seraphine needs a moment to remind herself that she’s still standing. She straightens up, allowing the victory to sink in. Inside, she’s processing the power she unleashed and how close she came to meet her own end. Carefully, she glances around judging the reaction of the others to her use of blood magic.
(OOC: just for me to keep tabs, did I spend the inspiration for a reroll on the attack?)
Finn holds his breath for a moment, waiting for the insect to twitch. When he feels confident it's dead, he gets carried away by the sudden victory and scoops Seraphine into a large hug lifting her feet a few inches off the ground. He sets her down, "Wow! I mean really just wow! That was going pretty poorly for me and then BAM Seraphine saps the life out of the sucker!" He imitates Seraphine putting her hands against the mantis and then curls his arms up and feigns falling over like the insect.
His chest heaves as his breath comes quickly form the adrenaline. He has a wild optimism in his wide eyes, claws full out, and addresses the group, "Valerian, Aralin, Seraphine, we're totally going to make it out of this. We are amazing together! What're you guys doing after we get big?" You can tell he whole heartedly believes this, and has a renewed hope for their next objective. He then clumsily keeps talking and babbles about plans as a group for the future. Although he's a tabaxi, he's really a big teddy bear at heart.
The stifling tension in the air recedes as the mantis falls to the ground. Having stood right next to Seraphine with the others, they had all gotten a good look of the sheer stunt she had just pulled in order to get the mantis down. It had been a risk, which didn't seem to be Seraphine's go to but it worked, they were all still standing.
"Seraphine, that was brilliant. You were incredibly brave,"he says with a genuine look, taking in the moment and Finn's words of excitement.
Turning to Finn, "Once we turned tiny, I didn't think that far ahead! I was unsure if we would even survive but I'm feeling far more assured on it now."Valerian was only half joking about it, he had come here to prove himself and once things had started going wrong, he didn't think he would be able to do anything. Perhaps they had all been selling themselves short.

Okay if I move 30ft of my movement in Seraphine's direction, would I be in 5ft range of the mantis?
yeah
In that case, no holding action. Valerian will just move towards Seraphine, get side by side and attacks the mantis with his rapier. (If a 14 hits, 10 damage)
Agree with Val, Bran too will move towards Seraphine.
