"You may be right Zale" replies the dwarf "but this small temple indeed hides something" thereafter Eric performs a ritual of identificationand poses his hand on the shrine' s wall
As you place your hands on the cold stone of the shrine and begin to recite the Identify spell, a soft glow envelops it as the magical energy spreads. Slowly, you begin to understand the history and nature of the shrine. You see visions of the past, when it was used for dark rituals. The shrine was dedicated to Jergal, the ancient god of death, murder and strive. You can feel the sinister energy that still resides in the stones, an echo of the many sacrifices that were made here. The spell reveals that the shrine was a place of sacrifice, where those who wished to destroy their enemies would bring their offerings. The offerings were led to the altar and sacrificed by activating a Fireballtrap. You see in your visions how a pressure plate was used to unleash said Fireball, a devastating force that consumed the offerings. You feel the intense heat of the fire and the fear of those who were sacrificed. The spell gives you a clear picture of the workings of the shrine and the magic it contains. You now understand that the shrine was an instrument of destruction, used to fulfill Jergal's will.
In addition, you sense a deep, ancient magic that still exists within this altar and you realize that it is still a powerful artifact, even after all these years.
Eric refers his findings to the others. He gets closer to Fireball trap and casts Dispel magic to secure it.
Once safe he looks back to the ghost "I saw now, and I can imagine what happened to you and many others" to the others he says "entering is safe now, Jergal is not much different form Tiamat, for clearing the area from his evilness, we have do dive underground into its shrine"
"Shall we start by smashing the evil altar into a thousand pieces?" Khessa suggests, already brandishing her Maul. "So it can no longer be used for gruesome rituals..."
"Do not be afraid" Khessa speaks in a calm voice to reassure the ghost. "We will take care of the Halfling inside! Didn't want you revenge? Be at peace. You'll be avenged"
With that, the blonde arcane warrior begins to put her plan to destroy the altar into action.
"Yes, indeed, dear Ghost..." the tall adventuress tries to keep a calm and reasonable tone "We want to help you, but you really should try to provide a little clearer directions... Take your time, but explain well. What does a 'medallion' have to do with all this now? Where should I find it and what do you wish me to do with it?"
I think it wants you to retrieve a medallion from the shrine.
A chilling and seemingly disembodied voice, echoing with the dry whisper of a tomb that had long been forgotten, replies. Turning to its source you notice a a mysterious undead entity. He has pale-brown, desiccated skin splotched with red spots. Strikingly, he lacks a nose but retains his other facial features. His outfit is tattered by the passage of time, and he wears bandages around his arms and chest. Despite his looks, his face, arms and parts of his collarbone are adorned with elaborate gilded strips of metal, giving him a regal look. Where did he come from all of sudden?
Khessa tries to hide her surprise by feigning indifference; therefore, as if the appearance of the undead prompter were the most natural thing in the world, she smiles and replies: "Oh, thank you, thank goodness you came to explain things better..."
The blonde arcane warrior changes her Maul with Hazirawn, foreseeing the imminence of a fight and, without losing sight of the newcomer, moves to approach the altar and take the medallion, if it is in sight - always acting as if this were the most natural and obvious thing to do. "Do you also happen to know what the medallion is for?"

The entity replies: The medallion was once a beginning. It could be an ending.
Looking inside you notice many bones from centuries ago. However you also notice a more recent victim, not much bigger than a child.
Does the figure remind something to Eric ( his Religion / Arcana check would be 21 ) ?
You are not sure... could it be? No surely not! But Jergal was known to take the form of any undead creature, amplifying the form's abilities with his gear and enervating touch. He faded into near-obscurity after stepping down from his position in favor of Bhaal, Bane and Myrkul. The death of those deities left Jergal in the service of Cyric and then Kelemvor; he worked well with Kelemvor, but retained his scorn for Cyric. He spent much of his efforts combating Velsharoon's efforts to prolong life into undeath. Little is know about him after the Second Sundering, though there are reports from Sylvania, where his avatar(s) have been seen. Or so it is clamed.
However, if a Medallion is visible on the altar, Khessa tries to retrieve it. Possibly without touching it directly; for example by throwing Frulam Mondath's Wearer of Purple Outfit on it and dragging it away with it.
Still unnerved by the spirit, Kriv summons the Fist down at his side. He squats down, using the Fist’s handle to steady himself as he closely examines the ground for tracks around the shrine. “I don’t like all of these riddles.”

While the entity talks a flake of burned leather falls from the smaller corpse. It reveals a sooty piece of metal. The loose leather has had some of the soot wiped away, leaving a small glint.

She then uses a simple cantrip to cleanse the object. Is it in fact a medallion? If so, she tries to show it to the Ghost: "Here! Is this what you want? Should I put it on your grave?"
The tall adventuress meanwhile tries to ask the other apparition as well: "Do you know what I should do with it, to finally let that poor soul rest in peace?"
It is indeed a medallion. It doesn't look particularly expensive, it's quite ordinary actually. The Ghost seems relieved and points at the other grave.
Khessa places the medallion on the other grave and watches the Ghost's reaction: "Is this okay now? Or should I dig up and bury him with whoever is buried here?"

Wis save: 3.
I do both party and individual character commissions. PM me for info.
Corti- Warforged bard of lore (Union!)
Jean CamGaret - Half-elven draconic sorcerer (Acjots' Rise of Tiamat)
Panya Swiftheart - Halfling ancestral barbarian (The Life and Lies of Veritas Finbask)
"Shall we start by smashing the evil altar into a thousand pieces?" Khessa suggests, already brandishing her Maul. "So it can no longer be used for gruesome rituals..."
No! Halfling! Inside! The Ghost starts to panick.
The characters that failed the WIS save (DC 13) take 11 + 3 = 14 psychic dmg. They are also frightened, but it only lasts 6 seconds.

"A Medallion?" Asks the dwarf "Is perhaps the artifact that the shrines hides? and what's the purpose of getting it out?"

"Was once the beginning of what?" replies Eric "Why you're interested in the medallion and in this shrine, are you a servant of Jergal !?"

The entity seems amused by your last question, but only replies to your first question. Looking at the 2 graves he replies: Of them...
