Climbing up to the platform the wight was standing on is not a problem. There are many rough surfaces for hand and foot holds in spite of the steamy conditions.
You see before you a 10 foot wide 10 foot high worked stone passage that ends in darkness 10 feet ahead. Darkvision and magical light cannot penetrate it.
*wait what about Devil's sight dark vision? That should go through magical darkness*

The Wiz looks at the inky blackness reach out and capture his friend. "Let it be known that I recommended a disposable familiar poke at the mysterious and ominously threatening void wall."
Then, realizing that this is probably some serious shiiiiiiiiiiiz, pops his good spells.
Ember immediately speaks the arcane words and makes the hand gestures that produce Frostbite on a tentacle. It is as much a test to see if cold does better than fire in this superheated environment.
Upon the completion of the cantrip a numbing frost begins to form on one tentacle.
(( Constitution saving throw => CON 15. On a failed save, the target takes 2d6+4 cold damage, and it has disadvantage on the next weapon attack roll it makes before the end of its next turn. ))
17 radiant dmg: 11 [if that hits, next attack on it has advantage!]
You hit the creature and it makes a *glorp* sound rather than what you might expect. The flare of light is momentary but gives Ember a shot at it CON save 4. It is again hidden by darkness. This is what you see in the brief moment.
