Equipping her crossbow (but not her shield, so she has a free hand ready), Jaylen steps to the northeast corner of the broken bridge (not crossing over) and waits for the orcs to get in firing range.
The Battle of Nightstone - Bottom of the Eighth - {Vark, Happy, Meiva, Sleepy, Grumpy, Njorman, Toruun, Jaylen, Fiddles, Devin, Xolkin, Beedo, D.O.R.K., Gentle, Orcs, Tiny, Kella & Guards} 1) In the face of concerted fire - most of which is unsuccessful - the second wave of Orcs enters the Moat and start swimming towards the bridge. 2)Jaylen draws a bead on one of the swimming orcs and manages to embed an crossbow bolt in its hand but it keeps swimming. 3)As the Orcs progress down the Moat, Devin flings a ball of flame at them and one of the Orcs - its head on fire - throws up its arms and sinks out of sight. 4) The four guards wind their heavy crossbows and on Sydiri's command loose at the swimming Orcs: First Attack: 19 Damage: 3), Second (Attack: 7 Damage: 7), Third (Attack: 6 Damage: 9) & Fourth (Attack: 4 Damage: 8) 5) Only Sydiri's shot hits one of the swimming Orcs. 6) In his rush to load and fire his crossbow, Torem (3) accidentally nicks his crossbow's string with the bolt's head as he places it in the guide. This weakens the string sufficiently that when he pulls the trigger the string snaps making the weapon effectively useless.
And we are back to the top of the order (i.e. Vark) for round 9.
Following a brief but shouted exchange with Beedo about why he had climbed down the ladder, Vark eyes go wide. "That... ain't a bad plan." He then proceeds to take potshots at whatever Orc in the water seemed previously weakened by their earlier efforts before sliding down the ladder into the tower to hide.
Vark's Action: Shortbow Attack: 22 Damage: 6 at weakened Orc.
Beedo pats Vark on the shoulder. "See! Now we don't gotta getz a buncha sticks thrown at us. Cuz I dunno bout ya. But sticks and stones will break dese skinny ass bones!"Beedo climbs up laughing on that note and takes a shot on a weakened Orc before sliding back down the ladder.
Beedo's Action: Shortbow Attack: 13 Damage: 8 at weakened Orc.
The Battle of Nightstone - Top of the Ninth - {Vark, Happy, Meiva, Sleepy, Grumpy, Njorman, Toruun, Jaylen, Fiddles, Devin, Xolkin, Beedo, D.O.R.K., Gentle, Orcs, Tiny, Kella & Guards} - Edited to reflect Post #618 (all attacks) 1) Vark's arrow hits one of the swimming Orcs in the eye and it just slips under the waters of the Moat 2)Happy, Meiva, you're all up. 3) Sleepy's shot hits another Orc and it also slips under the waters of the Moat. 4) Njorman seeing how crowded the bridge realises that he has almost as good a chance from the Windmill Hill despite the range at hitting one of the swimming Orcs so he takes careful aim and allows for the drop in elevation plus the slight wind (Attack: 11 Damage: 7 but just misses one of the swimming Orcs. 5) Toruun you're up. 6) Jaylen you're up. 7)Fiddles looks over at his colleague and says "this is how its done" as he takes careful aim and hits (see Post #618) one of the swimming Orcs which with a cry slips beneath the waters of the Moat. 8) Menwhile Devin lets another fireball go and hits another of the swimming Orcs. 9) Xolkin (DDP) you're up.
Jaylen takes hold of her amulet with her free hand. She looks at Xolkin and the others on the other half of the broken bridge and grins. "Let me give them something to swing at." She whispers a prayer to Tymora and a duplicate of Jaylen shimmers into existance to the west of Kella. The form is crouched down, but stands up gracefully and looks east toward the orcs. She holds a crossbow loosely at her side.
The Battle of Nightstone - Bottom of the Ninth - {Vark, Happy, Meiva, Sleepy, Grumpy, Njorman, Toruun, Jaylen, Fiddles, Devin, Xolkin, Beedo, D.O.R.K., Gentle, Orcs, Tiny, Kella & Guards} 1) Impact of Meiva's spell (DC 14 13). 2) Toruun's shot also hits. 3) Realising that in the face of the incredibly heavy missile and spell fire there chances of getting to the Bridge as a combat force with any chance of forcing its way up and into the Village is low to non-existent, the Orcs turn around and start to swim back to the western bank. 4) As the Orcs start to swim back, the three guards with viable crossbows rewind and loose shots at the retreating Orcs - First (Attack: 23 Damage: 18), Second (Attack: 14 Damage: 9) & Third (Attack: 6 Damage: 11). Two of the crossbow bolts hit and another Orc slips beneath the waters of the Moat. 5) the Orcs will reach the bank and climb out next round at which time D.O.R.K. will have arrived to hold the beachhead.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
OOC: Is Grumpy on the tower yet?
On Jaylen's turn, she will make a little wave with her hand and send her duplicate floating through the air 30 feet after the orcs (moving through Kella like a ghost) and fire her crossbow at the beasts as well.
Crossbow attack: 21; damage: 10 piercing damage — if the attack should be at disadvantage: 8
On his turn, Xolkin will exchange blades for crossbow and fire twice at the retreating orcs.
Light crossbow attack one: 14; damage: 6 piercing damage — if the attack should be at disadvantage: 20
Light crossbow attack two: 9; damage: 7 piercing damage — if the attack should be at disadvantage: 23
OK, I'm not sure why adding the critical fumble roll affected the post, but it looks like Jaylen's attack is still right (critical fail), and I know at least three of Xolkin's are right (22 and 20 on first attack and 9 as the primary for the second). It seems like the second attack roll was not 21 for the possible disadvantage, but that doesn't matter with the 9. Anyway, as for the critical fumble, it's the old standby:
6-8. Loose String. Your string comes loose. You lose this attack. Starting next turn you can make a sleight of hand check DC15 to fix it. Each attempt takes one turn.
Vark clamors his way back up to the top the tower. "Hah! Just look at'm run!" He then lines up another shot for a weakened Orc and fires it with a smirk.
Vark's Action: Shortbow Attack: 18 Damage: 4 at weakened Orc.
(For when his their turns come up..)
"What? They are! Gnoll piss -- let me see!"Beedo clamors up himself to eye the sight. "Wholly molly, when yer right, ya right Vark! Serves'em right too! Dey ain't nuthin' but a buncha chickens! Hey! Bwak Bwak BWAK! Overe Here!"Whether or not one turns to look or not, Beedo lets his arrow fly true at one the Orcs, caring not much for whoever it finds.
Beedo's Action: Shortbow Attack: 23 Damage: 4 at weakened Orc.
Meanwhile...
There is no hesitation, or even a warning aside from clank of metal before the head of an axe comes sweeping in for a staggering Orc's side mere moments after it staggered onto its feet on dry land. "Seek out your opponent's weaknesses and recognize your own." And as mercilessly as her eyes were bright red now, Heartbreaker cuts through the air, aiming to severe a head or bite deep into the shoulder. "Avoid an opponent's strengths and play to your own. You all were as much a fool as I for having forgotten this. Ingrain this in your spirit, for it is all you will leave this place with."
Heartbreaker Attack: 17 Damage: 8.
Bonus Action: War Priest Feature(1/3) Heartbreaker Attack: 17 Damage: 9.
Attack: 18 Damage: Unable to parse dice roll. (If with disadvantage: 22)
Seeing that the orcs are no longer approaching, Happy switches his warhammer for his heavy crossbow, dropping the former onto the bridge with a thump. He then fires at the nearest orc.
Attack: 11 Damage: 11
(If Meiva is within range--60 feet--):
Meiva points at a wounded orc and casts Toll the Dead yet again.
"The merciless shall be shown no mercy," she mutters.
DC 14 Wis save or 3 necrotic damage. Should be 9, not 10 (pushed the dice roller code).
(DM does that include Tiny and Gentle?)
Yes
DM - Stopping a god in his tracks
Gentle will put away his Greataxe as he moves onto the bridge drawing his heavy crossbow ready to fire next round.
Tiny will fire his Crossbow at one of the Orcs in the moat from his position. (If he can't see them he will move onto the bridge so that he can).
Attack: 7 Damage: 10
(I judge it in range, if not here is the second roll for disadvantage: 5)
(Tiny and Gentle, who i would think are the Strong Arms for this group seem to be useless...)
Equipping her crossbow (but not her shield, so she has a free hand ready), Jaylen steps to the northeast corner of the broken bridge (not crossing over) and waits for the orcs to get in firing range.
Crossbow attack: 17; damage: 7 piercing damage
DDP - you’re in range and hit an Orc. I’ll record it and put together an update when back in Manila - about 24 hours.
