No riding does not count as a short rest. Jaylen is pretty sure that while she may not have heard the sounds before they sound a lot like somebody once told her the Owlbears sound like. One screech is coming from the northwest and one from the northeast.
DORK had frozen at the question mid-direction informing of Vark and Beedo the plan for the evening when the screeching immediately puts her back on alert. "Acolytes, Battle Formation." The duo scramble out of the creek to grab their shield(Vark) and arms(Bow & Arrow for Beedo). "Double time it up Mr. G. The rest of you, circle up." By the time DORK has finished speaking, she has a javelin in hand and Ready to throw at the first genuine sign of danger.
(@Grant Did we not have a short rest prior to leaving? I know it was at least brought up..)
"That ... might ... be owlbears," Jaylen says quietly enough for at least one other to hear, but certainly not loud enough to carry. She attaches her shield to her arm and takes a defensive position near Trayan.
Battle of the Forest Glade - Evening - Day 4, First Ten-Day, Month of Eleasis - {Toruun, Devin, Owlbear #1, D.O.R.K., Owlbear #2, Vark, Meiva, Jaylen, Beedo) 1) Jaylen and Meiva were right as a pair of Owlbears, obviously hunting, come out of the forest in Squares D1 & H1. 2)Toruun - you're up followed by Devin
Torunn jumps in surprise, but quickly aims his crossbow. "You guys look hungry, but I am mostly skin and bones. You won't want to eat me. But still can't let you eat my companions." he says as he fires his crossbow at the Owlbear in H1.
Battle of the Forest Glade - The Owlbears attack 1) Despite being scorched by the Devin's Guiding Bolt and with Toruun's crossbow bolt hanging from its rear left leg, the Owlbear moves towards Trayan and some other animal that it doesn't recognise but certainly looks like food (Golemogotê) but Devin, D.O.R.K. and Toruun are in the way (F4). 2) Seeing the Owlbear advance towards them both Golemogotê (9) and Trayan (8) look frightened and ready to bolt if the Owlbear's get any closer. 3) The Owlbear attempts to bite (5) Toruun (Attack: 19 Damage: 11) and with a crunch bites deep into his left arm. It then slashes with its claws at (4) at D.O.R.K. (Attack: 19 Damage: Unable to parse dice roll.) and does 13 points of slashing damage as it rends her weakened chestplate dropping her to the ground. 4) D.O.R.K. please make a death saving throw. 5) The second Owlbear emerges from the forest a bit after the first and starts to make its way towards Trayan and Golemogotê but is not able to close the distance only reaching D3. 6) Vark you're up and thanks to Devin's guiding bolt you have advantage.
D.O.R.K's Death Save #1: 17. (1 Success/0 fails) (Almost regret not having that shield out. ah well.)
D.O.R.K launched her spear with all her might. But whether it hit or miss, one she is overwhelmed and goes down with a metallic screech.
"Ah! Not again!" Vark starts to turn back to fight off the owl, but stops short and looks back to Golemgote. After a few quick glances back and forth between the two, Vark curses in goblin one last time before continuing to run over to golem. "Kwa tlase! Kwa tlase!" He says, motioning near Golemgote's head, trying to calm it with familiar commands, and soon after climb aboard to take the reigns if they weren't already removed by then.
Calming the Elephant - NOT! 1) Despite Vark’s frantic commands Golemogotê refuses to calm down and as Vark goes to try and climb the still moving elephant he just manages to avoid being trampled. Vark smacks his forehead with his palm as he realises that the command that D.O.R.K had taught him to use in this circumstance was “khubama” which would direct Golemogotê to kneel. 2) Meiva, Jaylen and Beedo you're next in that order
Jaylen climbs aboard the restless Trayan so if he runs off, she's at least on him to bring him back. She then turns her attention to her comrades, even the fallen one, and prays for Tymora to turn the tides on their luck.

Beedo's Ego Check: 15. (Potentially goodbye Beedo, I knew you well.)
Beedo looks around frantically for a moment. But then, he remembered... he was an acolyte of the Red Knight, gosh darn it! And with D.O.R.K being hopefully restored, they were still in it! So with a weedy battle cry of his own, he drops his bow in favor of the scimitar on his belt, rushes into on the closest owlbear(re-positiong at 4E SE), and tries to weave in distracting swipes at its face with real strikes and name calling in goblin at it!
"Hey Magic man! Give'm another Thunderbolt while I got'em distracted!"
Bonus Action:Helpfulfeature to grant Help against the next attack aimed at the Owlbear #1.
Battle of the Forest Glade - Round 2 1) As Meiva releases her spell, D.O.R.K. feels a warming radiance pass over her and stands ready to engage the first Owlbear again. 2)Meanwhile Jaylen mounted on Trayan - who having the comforting presence of his rider on his back has calmed down a bit - seeks the assistance of the Lady of Luck for Meiva, Torunn and Dork. 3) Beedo runs around almost but not quite getting underfoot but distracting the first Owlbear sufficiently that Toruun has advantage against it. 4) All combatants on Owlbear #1 - provided you stay on the Owlbear this turn - have advantage as you are all providing flank attacks for each other 5) Meanwhile the second Owlbear is eyeying off Golemogotê and Trayan unsure which one to pounce on.

Torunn puts his hand on Owlbear #1 whilst saying, "Mighty Gond, help me destroy this wretched creature." Where his hand the touches the Owlbear, there is a sizzling sound and the smell of burning meat. He then turns to Beedo pointing and saying, "Gond, protect the annoying Goblin as well if you don't mind."
Action: Inflict Wounds Attack: 18 Damage: 10, +1 to hit from guidance.

Seeing the strength and ferocity of the creatures attacks Devin holds off with another magic attack in case someone, or himself, needs healing. There was still another owlbear to deal with after this one.
"Mystra help me!" He calls as he brings his staff down on the creatures side
One Dead Owlbear - early in Round 2 1) The ferocity of the Party's attacks overwhelms the female Owlbear and she drops. 2) D.O.R.K. as a result of Meiva's spell you can act - what are you going to do?
D.O.R.K twitches and sparks to life, and once on her feet with Door Knocker in hand, she quickly access the situation. "Combat Mode Re-initated. Target Acquired. Beedo with me." She says as she storms her way in front of the bear to smack it twice in the face! "In the name of The Mother, you will be brought to heel beast for your transgressions!"She shouts at it.
Door Knocker Attack: 25 Damage: 15.
Bonus Action: War Priest (2/3) Door Knocker Attack: 8 Damage: 12.
Just as the last attack might miss, for an instance, symbol on Dork's forehead flares with radiant energy, surrounding her arms in a crimson force that adjusted her last strike in time.
Using Channel Divinity: Guided Strike to add +10 to the 2nd Attacks to Hit.

And the Owlbear ... 1) D.O.R.K. attacks the Owlbear in a flurry of blows - see Post #688 - pounds into its ribs, cracking at least a few, with Door Knocker. 2)The Owlbear then bites (Attack: 10 Damage: 6) at D.O.R.K. the only target in range and follows this up with a slash of its claws (Attack: 9 Damage: 14) as she is all that is currently stopping him from reaching his prey. 3)Whilst the Owlbear's bite misses its claws down and all of Meiva's good work is undone as the Construct collapses into the stream with a splash. 4) Vark you're up
Does Jaylen recognize the screeching sounds?
Nature check: 7 + guidance: 4
OOC: Does riding on horseback/elephantback count as a short rest?
No riding does not count as a short rest. Jaylen is pretty sure that while she may not have heard the sounds before they sound a lot like somebody once told her the Owlbears sound like. One screech is coming from the northwest and one from the northeast.

Devin watches as the owlbears appear. This calls for magic, he realizes.
He casts Guiding Bolt at the creature in H1
Attack: 22 Damage: 13 radiant damage
On a hit the next attack roll made against this target before the end of your next turn has advantage.
He then moves back to F4.
