Going back to where the other half of the party was waiting, Glynquinal reports the findings, "Herr Doktor, Gruxx It looks like there are two separate levels up ahead with the top level going in the direction we need. We might be able to throw a rope over the top section to climb up there instead of going around like they might expect. Are you guys ready to go?"
Gruxx says, "Ready!" He then puts a handaxe in one hand and the hooded latern in the other. Gruxx then says to Glynquinal, "Also, you were asking 'bout bugbears earlier. One thing I remember from the stories are that they attack with strength from the shadows. Be on your guard."
"Fellows, we may want to be careful. Glenquenal, I noticed a form huddled on top of the bridge. I would hate to get attacked while climbing. Maybe if we stealthily make our way to the bridge, we could try to both shoot arrows and surprise him, kill him before he even knows we are there. I just don't want to get halfway up the climb, and get attacked in the back!"
Glynquinal responds, "We will have to solve that problem quickly and quietly. Already above us that could be a guard that could alert anyone above us. I'd bet anything they know this area much better than we do."
Looking at Herr Doktor Professor, Glynquinal asks, "Herr Doktor...do you have any ideas on keeping what may well be a guard from making a sound?"
"I am unskilled at climbing," the Herr Doktor Professor admits, "and would rather avoid doing it with goblins shooting at me."
He adds: "Perhaps we can lure the sentry down to us. I can create the sound of a coin striking the ground, then rolling noisily away towards the cave entrance. If the sentry looks down, I can make a single gold coin appear at this spot. (He points at M8.)
"Greed could work in our favor here, if the party agrees to the plan. The sound of a goblin calling for help might motivate the sentry to call for reinforcements; but a single gold coin might tempt it go down alone, so it won't have to share with its kamaraden.
"If the sentry takes the bait, we can blitzkrieg it before it sounds the alarm."
(HDP can cast Minor Illusion to create the sound, followed by another casting to create the illusion of a gold coin. The elves can rush it from the wolf cave, while HDP can hold up the bullseye lantern for Grux if he attacks from the cave entrance.)
The thought of Herr Doktor's illusion drawing the figure down out of greed makes Glynquinal smile. If only it is that easy.
Glynquinal replies to Herr Doktor, "That sounds like a good way to start the encounter Herr Doktor. I'm willing to give it a try. Ian and I can position ourselves where we could use our bows if it doesn't work out."
"No offense, but Gruxx, you and the Doc aren't all that sneaky. What it Glenquenal and I sneak ahead of you to the other side of the bridge - maybe we can bypass the goblin for now - where we can get set with our bows. You and Gruxx could come then, and if you aren't able to sneak by, maybe you could use some of your magics to make a distracting noise up on either side of the bridge. If it doesn't work, at least Glenquenal and I will get him by surprise with our arrows, if it comes to that"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Glynquinal responds, " That was what I was thinking. Sneak you two by if possible, and take anyone on the bridge by surprise if you can't." We don't know what is ahead of us so moving as quiet as possible would be good. Hard to have Gruxx moving around without even the hooded lantern giving him away."
Thinking about it a moment, Glynquinal says to Gruxx, "If you put the lantern at the end of your glaive handle you could hold it away from your body. Someone might shoot toward that instead of at you thinking you were holding it close to you."
Pushing ahead with Ian Glynquinal begins to make his way into the unexplored section beyond the upper level path as quietly as he can looking for any sentries along the way. Before Glynquinal can get very far Herr Doktor stops him and asks about what will be the signal for the illusion.
Merry Christmas (a little late), everyone. Maybe I should say Happy Kwanza. Anyway, I’m down south visiting family, and only have access through mobile, so let’s take a short hiatus. You can continue to plan if you like, but I can’t really do DM-y things without all my notes. I’ll be home Sunday and should be able to post that night.
(Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Holidays, and Happy Kwanzaa to everyone too -- I admit I had to Google search that last one, though.)
Since the Herr Doktor Professor also has darkvision, he asks the elves to signal him when to trigger the Minor Illusion. (I guess indicate what square you guys plan to be on when the illusion goes off.)
In the meantime, he will sheathe his rapier, so he has one hand free to handle Glynquinal's hooded lantern. He will keep it shuttered so as not to give away the party's position, but takes a ready action to unshutter it when he thinks a potential threat has appeared. This will provide Grux with enough light to see, while still allowing him to attack with his weapon of choice, the glaive.
Glynquinal will try to move to the other side of the upper level he and Ian discovered, far enough away that anyone standing on it to look toward the distraction Herr Doktor creates, will mean their back is to him.
Glynquinal says, "When Ian and I are in position I will roll a ball bearing toward you. It should make a small enough sound it won't get noticed right away."

Did Ian see anything or anyone atop The bridge with his perception? Or would I need to roll investigation for that?
Gruxx says, "Ready!" He then puts a handaxe in one hand and the hooded latern in the other. Gruxx then says to Glynquinal, "Also, you were asking 'bout bugbears earlier. One thing I remember from the stories are that they attack with strength from the shadows. Be on your guard."
Glynquinal turns to Gruxx, "Thank you, I'll keep that in mind."
Looking at Herr Doktor Professor, " How are you at climbing Herr Doktor? We might need to go up a level to start the next encounter."

As a matter of fact, Ian, you did notice a small form huddled on the top of the bridge. It gave no indication that it noticed you.
Ian says to the group
"Fellows, we may want to be careful. Glenquenal, I noticed a form huddled on top of the bridge. I would hate to get attacked while climbing. Maybe if we stealthily make our way to the bridge, we could try to both shoot arrows and surprise him, kill him before he even knows we are there. Glynquinal responds to Ian, "Let's go see what we can do about that then. Huddled like it was sleeping?"
Ian to Glenquenal "hard to say. I dont think it saw me, whatever it was."
Glynquinal responds, "We will have to solve that problem quickly and quietly. Already above us that could be a guard that could alert anyone above us. I'd bet anything they know this area much better than we do."

Gruxx adds, "Yes, if you can provide me with some light I can use my ol' glaive instead of these little handaxe.
To Ian, Glynquinal asks, "Do you think we could bypass that upper level without getting noticed?"
To Ian in Thieves Cant: Let's sneak ahead. Herr Doktor could use his magic to distract.
For Ian.
Ian says to all
"No offense, but Gruxx, you and the Doc aren't all that sneaky.
