After taking a peek, the Herr Doktor Professor crouches back down in the back of the cart. Signalling to his allies so they see what he's up to, he creates a Minor Illusion of a tarp covering the part of the wagon where he's located. He then tries to hide. Stealth check: 12
The Herr Doktor Professor is nestled comfortably in the back of the cart among the crates and barrels. Unlike his more robust colleagues, he has little love for the hardships of the open road. He prefers to conserve his energies for when his particular skill set will be more useful to the party. Half dozing, he daydreams about the comforts of civilization awaiting in Phandalin when the warnings of Ian and Glynquinal jolt him to full awareness. He stands up and takes a look around as Gruxx halts the wagon's motion. The trees along the part of the Trail are dense. He does notice what might be a path leading north off on the left side of the Trail a little before where the horses are lying.
Glynquinal says to Ian, "What do you think is going on with that? Looks like a road block to me." He can see that, because of the embankments on both sides of the Trail, getting the cart around the horses might be possible, but difficult at best. The road is indeed blocked.
Since he's on the ground already and not on the cart, Glynquinal decides to slide forward and, keeping a close ear and eye out for anything odd, more closely inspects what appears to be two dead horses. To Ian, "Better be ready with your bow if this goes wrong." Glynquinal can see arrows protruding from the horse carcasses. The saddlebags also appear to have been gone through.
Ian replies, "I've got the overwatch." The elf then says to Gruxx, "Can you get me a little closer?" He readies an arrow in his bow, watching for the first sign of danger.
As he moves closer to the horses Glynquinal draws his short sword and dagger from their sheaths. Looking over the area in front of him carefully, he inspects both sides of the road looking and listening for movement from anyone setting in ambush, but he doesn't see anything out of the ordinary.
OOC2: Glynquinal, how close do you want to get to the horses? Teaching moment: A reminder that perception is taking in your surrounding as a whole while investigation is for comparing items or looking at something closely. If you had a desire to make sure the horses died of the arrows, you could roll either a medicine or nature check (since they're horses). You'd also roll medicine or nature if you wanted to try to determine how long ago they died.
After taking a peek, the Herr Doktor Professor crouches back down in the back of the cart. Signalling to Gruxx and Ian so they see what he's up to, he creates a minor illusion of a tarp covering the part of the wagon where he's located to hide himself.
OOC3: Herr Doktor, many DMs say cantrips such as minor illusion, prestidigitation and thaumaturgy can't hurt a foe or even give advantage or perform the help action. I'm more lenient about that. If you use minor illusion in a way that you think might give you advantage on a roll (such as your stealth roll), go ahead and roll with advantage and note that you're doing so. If I overrule your opinion, I'll just see what the first die's result was and use it instead of the second (if he was higher). In this instance, I would say creating an illusion of a tarp over you would give you a stealth advantage. But you don't need to roll again in this instance. :)
OOC4: Gruxx, do you do as Ian asks and drive the oxen another 30 feet toward the horses?
Glynquinal will get close enough to try and determine how long the horses have been dead. He'd have to be pretty close for that, and would try to pull some of the arrows out to see if they can be salvaged. The arrow's design/ style may give a clue to who killed the horses. Raising a hand to have the rest of his friends hold back a bit, he moves in to check on the horses overall condition.
The arrow, while not easy to pull out, does come. It looks like a regular arrow. It can be reused if you desire. The horses are definitely dead. Rigor mortis has not yet set in, so they could not have been here too long. Also, the blood is tacky (not dry), and while bugs are buzzing, no other animals have congregated to devour the flesh. You can also see that it looks like the horses have been dragged to their current locations. It's looking more and more like a roadblock.
OOC: Knowing what little I do of Gruxx, I don't see any reason why he wouldn't have complied with Ian's request to pull the wagon closer. So, Glyquinal is right by one of the horses (five feet west of the north horse) and Gruxx, Ian and Herr Doktor are on the wagon, which has come to a stop 25 feet behind Glynquinal (the oxen are 25 feet behind, Gruxx and Ian are another 10 feet and Herr Doktor is another 5 feet). I am going to assume the Doktor will perpetually cast his minor illusion until he says otherwise. What's next?

Glynquinal thinks 'These horses have to be moved out of here to keep going, but they are more than I can move by myself, and we are going to have to move them in a hurry before we have company'
Glynquinal calls out to Gruxx, "Gruxx, we have to move these horses out of the way or we are going to be sitting ducks waiting for company. Can you lend me a hand to roll them out of the way?
Assuming Gruxx is wiling, Glynquinal will push as hard as he can to assist Gruxx in clearing them off the roadway.

Gruxx jumps down off the cart and walks over to help Glynquinal move the horses. As soon as the two get into position to begin the job, four arrows come soaring out of the woods from four different points at the pair.
DM super secret rolls: 7103301
Arrow 1 attack at Glynquinal: 13; damage: 5 piercing damage
Arrow 2 attack at Glynquinal: 23; damage: 3 piercing damage
Arrow 3 attack at Gruxx: 24; damage: 6 piercing damage
Arrow 4 attack at Glynquinal: 15; damage: 3 + 8 (-2; shouldn't have added modifier again) piercing damage
OOC: Ian, I would normally need another 1d6 roll from you since you rolled a crit on your prepared attack. However, what you've already rolled is enough to take out that particular foe. Sorry, Glynquinal. Just so you know, I left it up to the dice roller who was targeted.
An arrow catches Glynquinal in the left hamstring, another lands in his right buttock, and a third sinks into his shoulder. The elf slumps forward on top of the horse he was about to move. At the same time, Gruxx is struck by a fourth arrow; it glances off the side of his neck, cutting a large gash there.
Ian watches as an arrow flies out of the trees to the southwest of the horses. He points and shoots at a location he estimates to be the origin of the arrow. The elf's arrow flies through the trees like they aren't even there. Through the thick foliage, he can just see whatever the attacker was drop to the ground like a felled tree.
Round 1: Herr Doktor (prone, hiding), Blue (3/4 cover), Orange (1/2 cover), Yellow (1/2 cover), Gruxx, Ian & Glynquinal (unconscious, 0 saves/0 fails) - Ian and Glyn go at the same time (info. about cover)
Glynquinal doing his best to imitate a Druid using beast form to look like a porcupine drops like a rock as arrows slam into him. He is quite unconscious at the moment and unaware of his surroundings.
OOC after taking the first two and updating my character sheet, Glynquinal was still good. The last one took him into the negatives.
"Arrows fly from the bush, Cowards striking from ambush!" cries the Herr Doktor Professor. "The true warrior falls without a sigh, For he knows he will rise again, And his vengeance is nigh!"
The magical words seep into the unconscious Glynquinal's ears, calling him back from the darkness.
Bonus action: Cast Healing Word. Glynquinal is healed back up to 5 hit points.

Rising up from being prone in the back of the cart, the Herr Doktor Professor points at the attacker in K5 and casts Vicious Mockery at it:
"Sticks and stones may break my bones, But my words can certainly kill you!" he shouts at it.
(If the attacker in K5 fails its Wisdom save against DC 13 -- does it have disadvantage against the save if it was surprised? -- it takes 2 points of damage and disadvantage on its next attack.)
The Herr Doktor Professor then gets off the cart to F11, drawing his rapier as he does so.

Two of the three remaining goblins (though you all don't know they're goblins yet) fire two more arrows at Gruxx while the one to the northwest of the horses fires an arrow at Ian.
Blue at Gruxx: 10; Damage: 4 piercing damage
Orange at Gruxx: 12; Damage: 8 piercing damage
Yellow at Ian: 19; Damage: 7 piercing damage
WIS save for Yellow (need 13): 4 (OK, so no damage or disadvantage from vicious mockery)
Orange's fumble roll (for its ciritcal fail): 1; CON saving: 19
Now on alert, Gruxx is able to dodge the two new arrows. Ian, however, was still trying to look through the trees in the direction of the one he suspects he was able to take down when an arrow came from his left, piercing his side.
OOC: Herr Doktor, since you're now standing behind the cart, I'm going to award you 1/2 cover.
Seeing that Glynquinal has been healed Gruxx focuses on retribution.
"TEMPUS!" Gruxx shouts as he mouths begins to froth as he starts to rage.
Gruxx will use movement to charge taking the glaive off his back at the same time to S, 14. He will then made a side swipe attack with his glaive the orange attacker.
Glynquinal, angered at having been put down so fast on a dead horse rises drawing his short sword. Surveying the area quickly he decides to move to K6 and take a swipe at one of their foes trying to hide. Glynquinal calls out to his foe, "You shouldn't have done that." as he strikes.

Ian, attempting to keep an eye on everything is unfortunately wounded by a flying arrow from off to his left. He watches his friends get hit with arrows, and Glenquenal goes down, then thanks to the magical verse of HDP, he rises once again. He sees Gruxx hit, then take off towards away into the woods, and Glenquenal takes off towards him into the woods. Ian, not 100% sure of what to do next remembers 4 arrows flew at the traveling quartet, and looks to the east where the other attacker was. He lets lose an arrow from his shortbow at the Blue attacker:
7
if hit, damage 5
After he looses his arrow, Ian will drop his shortbow in the cart, then jump off the cart and run into the woods to assist Glenquenal. He runs as fast as he can, pulling his rapier and dagger as he goes.
Ian moves (using diagonal squares, and his max 35 feet) to k4 to offer help to Glenquenal
(Not sure if I am allowed to do this, and if I cant, DDP ignore this roll) once in the woods, Ian will attempt to hide behind a bush or tree or something: (Wood Elf has Mask of the Wild where You can attempt to hide even when you are only lightly obscured by foliage, heavy rain, falling snow, mist, and other natural phenomena.) Stealth: 9
(OOC: giving Glynquenal flanking I believe - is that advantage on attack? I know it allows for sneak attack - this is our Double Team: this should be Ian and Glynquenals new thing. All fights, double team.)
OOC: Glynquinal, standing takes half your movement, which leaves you with 15. That can get you to L6 (K6 would use 20). Did you want to draw a dagger and use your bonus action to take another swing? You may have only drawn one weapon because of that graphic, but I'll allow you to draw both weapons as one free action. If a character that uses a bow and arrow can draw their bow, select an arrow, and nock the arrow all as a free action, you can draw both a shortsword and a dagger with yours. If you'd like to attack with a dagger as well, go ahead and make those rolls.
OOC2: Ian, since Glynquinal can get to L6, I used your 35 feet to take you to J4, which gives you full cover from Blue and Orange, and will flank with Glynquinal. Since you are equal in initiative and he posted before you, he cannot use that advantage this round. Double teaming is awesome. You cannot hide, however, since that is an action. Too bad, because that is a most excellent roll.
OOC3: I'll wait to finish up this round until I know what Glynquinal wants to do.
OOC: Ian, sorry, I forgot something: Moving through the trees is difficult terrain. So, you can only get as far as J5. That means you have full cover from Blue, but only 3/4 cover from Orange.
Gruxx rushes into the woods and swings at the (orange) goblin he finds there. The goblin is able to deflect the barbarian's glaive. Glynquinal collects himself after being healed by Herr Doktor. The elf stands and rushes the (yellow) goblin he finds there. He draws both his shortsword and dagger, but the cunning goblin is able to use his bow to deflect one swing and dodge out of the way of the second. Ignoring the pain from his injuries, Ian fires another arrow, feeling confident that the projectile hit its (blue) mark. He then drops his bow, leaps from the wagon, and flies into the woods to aid Glynquinal.
Round 2: Herr Doktor (1/2 cover), Blue (injured), Orange, Yellow, Gruxx, Ian (full cover from Blue, 3/4 from Orange) & Glynquinal - Ian and Glynquinal go at the same time

Gruxx says to Ian and Herr Doktor on the wagon "Looks like were 'bout to get some. I'll get 'em out. Just get ready to hit 'em."
Gruxx will dismount from the wagon and approach the horses. He will attempt to begin dragging one of the horses out of the road.
