Thinking back to the many books in Igan's room and the fact that Harae seemed to indicate that something Igan found shut down the lighthouse, Utar wonders whether the best course of action might be try something they've never tried before....BOOK LEARNING!
"Maybe it's time we turned in for the night. I think this mystery is tied to whatever Igan was researching and then found here. I doubt we can follow his tracks without doing some reading."
The group decides to call it a night and head back to the Manor. Utar's Driftglobe once again lights the way, but Neya's torch burns out before they arrive. Using the key that Shandra left with the group, you have no trouble finding your way back to your respective rooms. Some of you go straight to bed, others decide to read/study a bit before hitting the pillows. Either way, you are now deep into the night and the group will only be ready for the next day way past sunrise.
As part of your long rest, each of you can pick one reading material to study for about two hours before slumber takes a hold of your tired mind and body. You have a few options:
Igan's journal;
Moonsea Cults by Thalioss of Tyr (written in an ancient language you now know to be called Thorass);
Religious tome on Tyr and some of the early factions that followed him;
History book on Thorn Island and House Sokol;
Try your luck in finding some other reading materials in Igan's quarters (requires investigation check);
Come up with your own option (may require a roll).
No rolls are required for reading books unless stated above, but the more info you have already gathered from a book impacts the amount of new and/or useful information you can get this time around. (some of you have been reading passages during your earlier investigations).
Other than letting me know what option you pick from above, you may then successfully complete a peaceful long rest, being sheltered in the Manor and all. The going-to-sleep religion check I had alluded to earlier in this game was only necessary if you had not yet met Harae, so no need to roll it now.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Praxx returns to Igan’s quarters knowing that something else resides there. He begins searching for something else that would catch his eye on this subject.
"Hmm, I'll take this one. No promises. I'm not much for readin' but it'll probably get me to sleep faster." Graxx will pick up the History Book on Thorn Island and House Skol and read it till he falls asleep.
"I am going to read through Igan's journal to probe a little deeper into the mind of the young man. Maybe I can get some information about Grim as well."
Graxx picks up the history book. Before he falls asleep, he manages to digest a chunk of House Sokol's history, noting that the words describing the nobles' most recent history were added in a different, newer ink. His conclusions are summarized below (not verbatim from the book, but instead what Graxx derives from the reading):
There always have been stories of treasure on Thorn Island, the isle functioning as a natural breakwater for Phlan’s harbor. The details differ with the teller of the tale. Many have sought the fabled riches of Sokol Keep, but nobody has ever claimed it, or at least admits to doing so. Now most believe it has been found long ago or that it is just a myth; one of many that surrounds Phlan.
In the decades that the keep was an abandoned ruin, there certainly has been ample of time for adventurers to scour the island. When House Sokol assumed control of the island, they never professed having found any treasure when they restored, and later extended, the keep. And they never looked very kindly on treasure seekers intruding upon their property and stead-fastedly blocked any thorough search of the keep in the century that they have been its custodian. Having been forced to mostly leave the island recently due to the troubles in the city, there would be little the House could do about any uninvited guests.
Still, Sokol Keep’s lighthouse is a reliable source of income for the house and important to the city’s maritime trade and defense. So the family left a token few retainers to maintain the fortress and ensure that the beacon was operational. Leading this small group was the young Igan Sokol, a junior member of the family. In addition, the Black Fist has a small squad of soldiers at the Keep to ostensibly help with defense.
Overall, Graxx enjoys the history in this book but suspects most of it is stylized. The part added more recently seems genuine though, and unafraid to show House Sokol's less idealized version (i.e. being blunt about fleeing the city but keeping retainers because of the money).
Neya focuses on Igan's journal. Here are her findings:
Igan was well aware that his job was a kind of banishment. He thought that finding the fabled treasure would bring him back into good graces with his demanding parents. Unlike any previous treasure hunters, Igan had one huge advantage. He had been raised at the Keep, and at a young age he had found a well-hidden shrine of Tyr—long since forgotten. He restored it and maintained it ever since. Unbeknownst to others, the shrine was haunted by the spirit of a female cleric of Tyr, named Harae. The spirit knew of the treasure, and wanted to reward the young man for his dedication to the shrine. Hardly more than the sheerest presence, she was unable to truly interact with the world beyond moving items around, controlling the breeze, or whispering a single word in the wind here and there. Nevertheless, moving the right books and opening them to the correct pages was all that it took. With the help of the spirit, Grim, and the other Black Fist guards, Igan found the hidden treasure.
From this point on, the journal lacks easy reference points. There are no dates, just random notes all over the page including sentences in the margins. It seems more like a collection of thoughts and notes than an actual journal. The handwriting is still decent, though. In these harder to read pages, Neya discovers a few extra tidbits of useful information:
Igan started his search on a whim.
He never took the search serious until he met Sergeant Grim, a strong and friendly dragonborn.
Igan became more serious about his search after a book about Tyr literally fell into his lap, not accidentally.
Toward the end of the journal, whatever pretense of scholarly research devolved into the ramblings of an obsessed man.
Igan found out that Harae herself is the only one left with full knowledge of how to operate the magic of the Lighthouse, but that getting that information from her is extremely challenging due to her communication limitations.
Despite her findings, Neya notices that Igan was careful enough not to write the exact location of the found treasure in his journal. There are no mentions of wererats either. If anything, that loose page that fell from the journal earlier is the most promising lead the group has, Neya concludes.
Praxx goes back to Igan's quarters and, after searching his bookcase more closely, finds a set of loose notes. They seem to be describing in detail the people that inhabited Thorn Island with him. These are Praxx's conclusions after reading the many loose pages:
While Igan Sokol was the quartermaster of the keep, House Sokol assigned other retainers to the keep for the more menial tasks. A middle-aged groundskeeper Darvag is in charge of upkeep of the structure and grounds and his wife, Shandra was primarily responsible for ensuring the interior of the keep was clean and meals prepared. Their son, Rorin acts as an aide to both of them, as needed. Recent events have scared the three servants. They did not know the details of Igan's friendship with the spirit, Harae, and assumed she was haunting the Keep. But they have a job to do. Despite their fear, it is business as usual, at least as far as Igan was concerned. Praxx notices that Igan likely paid very little attention to the three retainers, even if he was always friendly and courteous to them. The quartermaster was unlikely to know Rorin's secret.
Igan describes Sergeant Grim as a kind, dedicated, and easy-to-befriend copper dragonborn. Guard Sergeant Grim has been the ranking guardsman at the Keep for months, and the two of them were often together and would engage in long conversations out of earshot of others, though Igan confesses that their friendship seemed odd at times. Sergeant Grim seemed a nice enough fellow. He treated the servants with respect and from Igan's point of view, genuinely seemed to like the young noble. A few days ago Igan had been really excited, bursting with energy, but frustrated about the fact that sergeant Grim was not present; having returned to the city for official reasons. When Grim returned, they were not so friendly towards each other.
There are no notes on the individual Black Fist guards.
Notes on Harae describe her as being dead a good while, and finding that being dead is dull. She watched Igan grow up from a small child and when Igan found the shrine that she is bound to, she saw the spark of goodness, or so this is how Igan interprets it. She was grateful when Igan expressed an interest in restoring the shrine and became furious when Grim and his companions suddenly became angry at Igan and vice versa. Harae also become angry at herself for not having seen their disagreement coming. Igan told her all would be back to normal soon, but Harae did not seem to believe him.
Drazzim goes straight to bed: "I'll leave the studyin' to you learned folk..."
"I would like to take another crack at the book on Moonsea cults. I think from what we gleaned from Igan's journal this far, it might hold some more secrets for us yet. Neya, I think I might have need of your helm to aid me."
"As long as we return the helm to Igan, I don't see an issue with using it until then. Besides, Thorass script gave Igan some trouble and he had the luxury of time."
Utar receives the Helm of Comprehending Languages from Neya, and spends the next hour-and-a-half going through the ancient tome. Here are his conclusions:
The book details various ancient cults and their religious practices complete with detailed sketches. The cults described within seem to be mostly those that worship demons, powerful spirits or simply cults of personality. As far as Utar can tell, the vast majority of the information in this tome is hardly useful for the quest at hand. That changes, however, once the cleric reaches the page indicated in the loose page the fell from Igan's journal back in the East Tower.
Reading page 78, Utar locates a passage referencing an ancient cult that worshiped an entity referred to as the “Just One and the Great One.” The rest of page 78 itself depicts some of the Cult’s symbols, secret signals and prayers, all of which are in Thorass, the long-forgotten tongue Utar can magically understand due to the magical helm he is wearing. The last page of Igan’s journal is really what makes the information on page 78 of this tome seem important. On it, Igan identifies a specific phrase that derives from words on page 78. Utar now understands the words to be a magical phrase of some yet unknown importance.
Utar notes that the neither the tome or page 78 or the loose page tell him where to look for the treasure.
(For easy reference, here the post containing the loose page: link)
The party then all fall asleep after some engrossing reading. You may complete a long rest successful. By the time you are all ready to continue your quest the next day, it is already mid-morning.
Graxx then says, "Everyone sleep well? I know I did. Book put me right out. The writer seemed to be pretty intent on making sure we knew how big their sword was. Anyway, what caught my attention was the talk of treasure on the isle. Did you all find anything?"
"It seems that Igan is aware of Harae's existence and Harae is very fond of Igan, mainly because he took the time to take care of the shrine in the east tower. In her own way of expressing gratitude, she started dropping hints as to the presence of treasure. At some point, Grim got involved and he and Igan seem to have found where the treasure is located. There's nothing in the journal that says where, however."
"More related to our purposes here, Igan may have inadvertently given us a hint as to why the beacon is not lit."
Utar passes the helm back to Neya, bowing his head as he does so. He then opens his book to page 78 and puts it on a table so everyone can read it.
"Thanks to Neya and that helm I found this passphrase. I think its of some importance... Not entirely sure what it does mind, but I think Harae knows. I think we might have to find the ghost again soon."
Utar makes sure that you all see the phrase in question, written in Thorass: "TOE MONO, TOE MEGALO." There is also a clear indication that one must be touching the intended target of this incantation.
As you all make note of these instructions, Shandra places a hearty breakfast on the table for you all to enjoy, wishing you all a good morning and good luck out there investigating the mystery of the Lighthouse. She then leaves, with a curtsy.
Drazzim interject: "So folks, where to in this fine mornin'?"
"In the east tower is Harae's shrine to Tyr. Igan's quarters had a large number of books, including the Moonsea Cults, and the helm. The lighthouse had nobody inside while the beacon did not have enough magic flowing through it to illuminate anything. The only place we haven't been is the west tower. All of what we've been seeing apart from anything we've learned about the lighthouse is something may have happened during Igan and Grim's search for the treasure somewhere on the island.
"Now that I think about it, didn't that loose sheet of paper have a mention about something under the west tower?"

The group shares their individual findings over breakfast, and then heads out towards the West Tower as agreed. The path to reach it is a bit more treacherous than those leading to the other two. The stones marking the way are cracked at first, and then simply absent as you go over a hill to reach the tower. You reckon this to be one of the higher points on the island.
Upon reaching the tower, you notice that the only door leading inside is wide open. Unlike in the previous evening's investigative tour, the sun shines bright, and there is no breeze blowing around. The vegetation around this tower is also a bit less luscious than elsewhere.
"This isn't right. The wizard stone is playing tricks on our minds." Graxx says uneasily. "Get what you need and let us get out of here."
