Yes he plans to open the chest...does setting his mage armor make noise? Cause I don't know if we put that on every morning with the staff and I'd want that up.
Casting mage armor now would make noise, because it has a verbal component. We can retcon in that Varinth used the staff on you earlier as you were approaching the tower. But next time, you need to post it explicitly, and Varinth needs to keep track of his staff's charges (they could run out in a difficult battle).
Scupper, you open the trunk. Inside you find lots of clothes, not very interesting, but also a small leather bag; as you pick it up, you hear coins jingling inside.
kost frowns at Strix. Assist. Yes indeed. I'm sorry, he turns to Dekhan and Incantis, I'm not entirely sure I follow what your friend is saying. Nevertheless, I do have a small task that might be of interest to you. It involves travelling to the Neverwinter Wood and asking a certain person a certain question. That's all. How does that sound? Perhaps two or three days' journey, and I will pay twenty gold on returning successfully.
"N' how spect certain person like kesjun? Lotta coin for jus' kesjun. Think mebbe him not like kesjun n we hav' kill em. Think mebbe him lucky, least gets ask kesjun. Not treat like yes'days shoe...." Strix mutters, wandering off towards the east around the well. If there's a zombie on the edge of the group he'll feint a lunge with the torch to see how good Baldy's control is but otherwis is just off for a sulk, kicking stones and walls.
Hmmm, says the wizard. I think I mostly understood that. Such a strange group. Is the drunken fellow with you as well? If you are interested, the task is to go to the woods north of here, locate a particular glade and a particular house within that glade - don't worry, I have been there before and can provide detailed directions - and ask a particular question of the inhabitant, who is in point of fact a banshee. Should you come to blows, my good... um... shifter, then she will wipe your charming group from face of the world without 'breaking a sweat' as they say, though I am not certain the banshees do in fact sweat.
As for why I need you, well... I may not have been as polite to her as I should have. Politeness, you see, is the key to her favour, as she has been rather ill-treated in the past by folk here and elsewhere. So, do we have an agreement? Will you perform this errand for me?
None of this seems to be satisfying the burning questions in Scuppers mind. The whys and where fors of the wizards endeavor. He closes the chest returns the key...
Research without notes, wizard without spell book...
He makes another scan of the tent after hearing the discussion start to sound resolved...if he sees a book, he grabs it... any paper with writing in a desk drawer or scroll pouch... information...not gold... otherwise he makes his escape.
Scupper thanks whatever gods or devils were watching over him today...Shadow keep me? Then quickly ducks under the back and shoves the books in his pack and starts making his way up the hill, sticking to trees and darker areas.
"A banshee you say?" Incantis asks intriguingly outloud before continuing to his companions silently. "Probably this is the same banshee Sister Graelle already asked us to kill. We could double down on that reward and collect from both parties, and asking this necromancer's questions might answer a few of our own..."The half elf scratches his pointed chin thoughtfully to explain the delay in his speech. "What...what exactly would you have us ask this being that could 'wipe us from the face of the earth' without trying?"He continues to his companions. "On the other hand, I really don't like the thought of working for one who would enthrall his slaves thus..." He eyes the zombies uneasily.

You will take the quest then? Most excellent. I am fortunate that you happened by, indeed. Very well. The banshee's name is Agatha, you will find her in Neverwinter Wood. He proceeds to give you directions, essentially the same as those you received from Sister Garaele though a little more detailed. Now, do please remember, politeness is the key. And perhaps, someone should address her who has a 'winning' personality. The question to be asked is, and do make a note of this, exactly: "What is the name of the wizard who built the tower at Old Owl Well?"
Oggor and the two orcs with him, sensing that the battle is over, look a little confused but back slightly away, out of the immediate reach of the zombies. The zombies don't react.
"I didn't say we took the quest..."Incantis remarks telepathically and sardonically to his companions. "But now we know all the context. What to do friends? I await your signal."Who built the tower indeed...he muses to himself.
Do you happen to know where in the thread we were first told about Old Owl Well?

I believe that Zoria was told about the Old Owl Well while she was gambling during the break. It was at the first table and not the second one, but I do not remember anything about who built it off the top of my head.
Scupper waits out of sight at the top of the hill. He doesn't want to answer until he feels free of the wizard's potential suspicion...but will give a curt "done" and he will signal Strix or Incantus if he can via hand signal ...if he can keep himself from the wizard's eyes as he does so.
Dekhan doesn’t like the idea of working for a Red Wizard of Thay.... could he be connected to Glasstaff? And for what nefarious purposes could a be romanced need to know the name of a long dead wizard. This smacks of Evil.

Strix, if you wish to feint an attack on a zombie, tell me which zombie on the map you want to go for. https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/play-by-post/30964-lost-mine-of-phandelver-2019?comment=3895

Scupper, make an Investigation check as you look around for any signs of books or research.
Investigation 3
Scupper, you see two books lying on the ground next to the writing desk. One is A History of the Sword Coast and the other is Remnants of Netheril.
Grab them and slip out!
Scupper thanks whatever gods or devils were watching over him today...Shadow keep me? Then quickly ducks under the back and shoves the books in his pack and starts making his way up the hill, sticking to trees and darker areas.
*gentle snoring noises*
Strix, which zombie are you pretending to attack?
From anyone, let me know if you accept the Red Wizard's quest (and ask for more details), reject it and leave peacefully, or attack. It's up to you.
Scupper, you make it out of the tent fine (with the books but without the bag with coins, right?)
(sorry, looked at the map, he doesn't pass one so he's just going to perch on the wall at M10)

To Scupper: I hope you found intrigue, we really should take about some sort of silent signal between the two of us.
To Dekhan & Zoria: I still don't like the idea of working for this man, this time I side wholly with holy men.
To Strix: This is far too convenient a contract my strigine sidekick, keep a keen eye out....
