"Let's move quickly to avoid getting caught in something like this again. If we can keep from being noticed, even better." With his last statement, Gruuun looks down at his large form and shrugs. He attempts to hunch over to reduce his great height.
"The odd gnome said these rings would protect us. I think we should take time to activate them, before we blunder into more trouble. Little dragon," she addresses Hox, "Can you find us a place to be safe for an hour?"

ey/em/eirs, or they/them works, too (just not he). Role-playing since that keep on those borderlands. I love it so.
Zane says, "We can head that way and find a place for you to rest. I don't really need one at this point, so I can go and ask after the clues we have gathered so far."
"It is not rest I need," she seems offended, "But a chance to attune to this ring that we might be protected from... whatever the odd gnome said," she finishes lamely.

"From whatthe little man said, we should get these rings working before going to much further. We should hunker down here or somewhere close by."
Would there be enough debris / surviving structure to build a small shelter that looks mostly like rubble? If so I would like to start doing so while other keep watch. (Gotta save those spell slots mate ;)
Gruun locates a nearby house that looks nearly intact, though the inside is as burned as the Firestar Chariot Inn. Keeping watch over the next hour, the party is undisturbed, though occasionally a shady individual or two enter the streets, searching through bodies and rubble for anything valuable. They are quickly disappointed and move on, allowing the party to rest.
OOC: Is everyone spending their time attuning to the rings, or is there something else that someone would like to do during this rest?
If you would like to roll any hit dice for this rest, please do so in your next post.
Zane sits down and starts humming quietly. At first it seems like nothing much, but as you listen there is a calm melody behind it and it seems faintly magical. ( Song of Rest: During a short rest, friendly creatures who can hear your performance regain additional hit points when they spend Hit Dice based on your level: 1d6 )
OOC: In order to attune to an item, the rest must be spent focusing only on that item, so Zane wouldn't be able to do so while playing a song of rest. Looks like nobody rolled hit dice though, so that won't matter much.
The rings and monocles have been updated in each character's inventory. I'll assume that Hox and Marc are also attuning to their rings during the rest.
Now attuned to the rings of mind shielding, the party turns them invisible on their hands. Now hopefully more prepared to combat the shapeshifters mentioned by the strange gnome Fumbles, the group prepares to respond to "Helmeet."
It is nearly dark by the time you cross the city together, though light warms the streets from within residences and taverns, filled with trapped denizens trying to find activity within the closed city. Ahead, the looming grandeur of the Hall of Vigilance greets you with its imposing structure, much larger than any of the nearby buildings. Mumbling conversation emanates from within the hall.
The human paladin will lead the way into the building, regardless of whether anyone comes with her. Understandable if the monster contingent (and/or Marc) wants to stay out. She will look about, and if she is not challenged, she will approach someone who looks like a functionary, if there is one.

Zane at first brushes the remark off, "Yes, that's what I meant."
"Wait, right, I forgot about that one."
"This seems important. Lets find a place to rest and get ourselves situated with these items first."
"I could keep us safe for an hour if we like''

OOC: that was in addition to attuning to the ring
Killian, being uninjured, will spend her time attuning to the ring.
Edit: and making it invisible, and checking to see if anyone is in it already.

Gruun keeps an ear out near the door but stays focused on getting this small ring somehow onto his large fingers and making it disappear.

OOC: I believe we reached the consensus to go to the Halls of Vigilance. Any objections?
OOC > None. Let's go!
