"Then we share the same goals," Fumbles answers Killian. "Perhaps you are more involved already than I thought. It cannot be a coincidence then that it was you that I found in the Poetry Society," he says at Gruun and Hox's words.
"It is not just as simple as killing them. The Slaadi have help, they were never this difficult to detect in the past; if it were not for the aura of chaos they leave behind, we might have found them too late. The monocles have been helping, but a few of them seem to have some sort of spell or anti-magic about them that the monocles do not even work on. I had been recruiting spies but the Slaadi have obviously figured that out. I kept most of the details from them, so luckily those that survive will know nothing to compromise our efforts. Roccar and I have tried teleporting from the city, but the Slaadi have done something to block teleportation magic, so instead we--did you hear that?"
Fumbles stops, but the only sound is water dripping, echoing through the tunnel.
"Everyone keep moving!" he says, continuing forward.

Zane is growing tired of this endless running. Adding to it that he didn't hear anything either his suspicion of Fumbles is growing. (Insight check if possible about the "did you hear that" part - 10). He will follow Killian though, but there is clear distinction in Zane's mind between staying with the group or following Fumbles.
"The city's sewers run through parts of these tunnels," Fumbles explains to Hox as Killian takes the lead. "This path will take us under the city. Roccar and I have built a portal beneath the Master's Hall to prepare for the coming fight. I'm afraid the Slaadi might be closing in. We never expected they'd strike so soon. I had Pipyap send a message to Roccar as well, but I have no idea if he got it. Ah, bugbear...you seem most likely to survive," he concludes, fishing through his pouch for a small piece of parchment and a quill, hastily attempting to write as he walks.
"Here. For security purposes. I have written the command word to the portal on this slip. Should the time come when you need it, open it. It will only work within a short range of the portal, and the message will reveal itself for a short time and then dissolve. Now, we have to get to the portal carefully. If we are followed, and Doramor discovers its location he will have easy access to steal the rest of the Staffs...and then the Elder Evil will have nothing to block its path," Fumbles finishes.
Up ahead, a four-way intersection can be seen, branching to the left and right, with a path continuing forward.
Gruun gingerly takes the piece of paper and using only two fingers places it securely in a close pouch. He emits a low rumble as he mutters something about magic.
"Is there anything to do that will bring an end to these plans? Hiding can only work for so long."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"The long term plan is to get to the portal, hope that Roccar is there, get out of this lost city and finish collecting the Staffs; and should any of you have any reservations about helping, I can assure you that our purse is deep. This is end of the world material here. Now this is where it gets tricky--" Fumbles starts.
Killian stops to ask which way, and a growl from above you alerts you to four large, toad-like creatures clinging to the ceiling. They drop to the ground behind you, glaring with a hideous evil look in their eyes. Almost eight feet tall, their hide is black and their gangly, muscled arms end in horrible claws.
"No, no, no! Death slaadi, here?"Fumbles gasps.
"It loves you," is the only response from a slaad before they charge.

Two of the slaadi swarm Fumbles, tearing at him with their jagged rows of teeth and their long claws, while the other stand back, unable to attack through the crowd. The gnome does a respectable job of ducking beneath their long arms, but is bitten by one, taking 15 damage. Nearly pinned, claws rake across his chest, dealing 18 damage. He turns to shout, "Run! Find what you are looking for!" and another set of claws nearly gouges him in half, tearing through his back and side, dealing 36 damage.
Somehow clinging to life, the gnome pulls another necklace from his pouch. "Aw, gnome-licker," he curses through blood. Then weaker, "Go. I'll buy you...time."

Tracking: Fumbles is engaged in melee combat behind the party with two death slaadi. The other two slaadi are 5 feet behind the melee, unable to advance through the crowded tunnel. The four-way intersection is 80 feet ahead of the party.
OOC: It has been almost two weeks again since Marc's last post, so I'm not sure if he's still with us but I rolled his initiative for this combat.
Unfortunately for Fumbles, she’s not that kind of paladin. Killian backs away to make sure the others are coming, then turns and Dashes another full move, preferably turning the corner at the intersection, following the others. She’ll turn left if she gets there first, but I don’t expect that to happen.

Seeing they are outcast but not wanting to lose the one person who has been both trustworthy and knowledgeable Gruun quickly takes his rope and throws the coil toward Fumbles, holding the other end and running toward the intersection."Grab hold and I'll haul you away from there!"

Heeding Fumbles' advice, the party dashes away from the slaadi toward the intersection. Fumbles glances at the rope thrown by Gruun, then locks eyes with the bugbear and simply nods, trying to delay the inevitable as he dodges a slaadi claw.
"I know what must be done," he shouts. "Find Roccar! And don't trust Denorian in the future!" With that, he chucks the necklace at the ground beneath his feet, a wicked smile on his face. The cavern is rocked, and a wave of heat washes through the tunnel as it collapses behind the party, burying Fumbles and the slaadi beneath hundreds of feet of rubble. Hox reaches the intersection, and the rest of the group quickly catches up. Passages run left, straight, and right. Shallow water can be seen in the tunnel straight ahead.
"Quickly! Over here, this way!"a familiar voice beckons from your left. Elric, braggart of the Yellow Rose from the Firestar Chariot Inn, stands a hundred feet into the left tunnel, waving his arms.
OOC: Which way? This campaign has a unique mechanic centered around "social encounters" like this one, where character responses can greatly affect the world around them. How does each character respond to the situation, in either first or third person?
Killian was headed left anyway, in an earlier post, so she turns the corner that way then skids to a stop, shield up and longsword out when she sees Elric. Both hands full, she can't use the monocle, but she growls, "The cheesy bun merchant had us expose the gnome, I am not liking him!" And she begins to back away, returning to the intersection.

Gruun nods in return as he begins moving away and recoiling the rope to stow away. Seeing Elric in the tunnel, especially in current events, his eyes narrow, he takes his Greataxe in one hand and raises his monocle in the other to peer at Elric. He moves forward to stand just behind Killian keeping Zane and Hox behind him.
Zane and Gruun take a moment to peer through their monocles while Killian backs up behind them to the intersection. Everything in the left tunnel, including Elric, appears the same through the monocle.
Hox leads the party through the right-side passage, ignoring Elric's call. The sound of water is soon gone, leaving only footprints to be heard as the tunnel begins to wind. After the danger seems to be gone, the run slows to a walk, and a few minutes later the tunnel ends in a flat, stone wall. The stone of the wall does not match the natural stone of the caverns, and appears newly built.

For Zane:
You don't detect any deception about the gnome.

Zane would actually like to use Cutting Words as a reaction of Fumbles getting attacked (but it's up to you how to resolve it)
Zane shouts "How do we find it?" and then bolts off towards the intersection, also using Dash action.
