Kif is truly torn between helping his friend look for the pup and protecting Ireena, feels duty bound by promises made to follow her and make sure she gets to safety

Kif, Barnaby, Ireena, and Lucento reach Vallaki a short time later, without incident.
The Old Svalich Road meanders into a valley watched over by dark, brooding mountains to the north and south. The woods recede, revealing a sullen mountain burg surrounded by a wooden palisade. Thick fog presses up against this wall, as though looking for a way inside, hoping to catch the town aslumber.
The dirt road ends at a set of sturdy iron gates with a pair of shadowy figures standing behind them. Planted in the ground and flanking the road outside the gates are a half-dozen pikes with wolves’ heads impaled on them.
Fope picks up the trail of the wolves, where they ran into the forest.
You chose to make a stealth check, which is fine, but understand that you are compromising speed. Are you prioritizing speed, or stealth? They both matter, as you enter the foreboding woods, grateful for Barnaby's Darkvision spell.
One of the shadowy figures approaches the gate, and you can see an armored human woman peering through the bars. She holds a lantern up to the barred gate as well, and moves it around so she can get a clear view of the party.
We don't open the gates at night, travelers. The other guard, without a lantern, has also approached the gate. The bars go both ways and are close set, but the guards appear to be armed with long weapons. Spears, or perhaps even longer.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.

Already an hour late, Føpé prioritizes stealth over speed in the treacherous wood.
Tree Spirits protect me, protect Revenge.
And I almost had the little bugger trained to stay with us.
Alright Fope, let's keep it quite, leaves rustle underfoot, Th-nder Sp-rits! Sorry Tree Spirits.
I left my warrier behind. That’s got to be the stupidest thing I’ve ever done.
Save Revenge. I took on one responsibility in this place. This place. What am I doing here? Exile. Revenge reminds me of Charlie. He freed me from this exile, he connected me to home. Home.
If I die in this forest, meeting my promise, then I will die as I lived, lost and forgotten.
At least I got to ride a wild wolf. That thing was the size of a pony! What would they think back home? They’ll never know. I have to save Revenge.
Lucento steps into the light of the lantern, while keeping a respectful distance from the gate, and entreats the lantern wielding guard:
“With good reason,” as he makes a sweeping gesture at the impaled wolves, "we encountered a small contingent a bit up the road and were able to send a few to the plane beyond this one."
"I expect that the wolves are not the only perils on these roads, and I can understand why you wouldn’t make a habit of opening your gates to this darkness. But surely there must be something I can do to persuade you to make an exception this night?”
Fope, you take your time. Hurrying but staying low and quiet, and being careful not to lose your way in the forest, you reach the edge of a clearing. You can just make out a figure - a human, or human-shaped, anyway - standing alone in it.
“You killed wolves on the road? Just as likely you *are* wolves on the road. Prove it!”
OK, well take a look at these, (he lays out the wolf ears, still fresh These didn't come cheap, besides us there is still one on the road that should be let in, a halfling man soaked in wolf blood who will be following us
Throw them over here, by the gate. You toss them over and she draws them the rest of the way with a short blade. She pulls them over, and you can hear the guards talking: Definitely fresh. And the dire wolves, too, by the look of it.
You hear some machinery move and the gates creak open wide enough for you to enter, one at a time.
Fope has only just barely begun to follow the trail into the forest at this point, in your part of this storyline.
The party enters a town that is clearly bigger than Barovia, and surrounded by a 15' wall. Torches and lanterns hang about the pathways through town, and, even in this early evening air, there is foot traffic. It's not a happy place, exactly, but it is definitely more animated than Barovia was.
Well our friend Ismark asked us to get Ireena to Vallki. Ireena, did you have a destination here, perhaps the old church, that would take you in and give you shelter.
Kif looks about..didn't we have a cart at one point?
We can't leave Fope on his own. Kif and Lucento, bring Ireena to town. I will go with Fope. We'll catch up with you shortly. Barnaby sighs heavily, tightens the knot on his robe's belt and waddles off behind Fope. Let's go get your pup back.

Ok. Place yourself with Fope. And don't blame me afterward when s**t goes sideways.
You and he are both at the edge of a clearing. Make Perception checks.

Ok. Ireena says, “You might be safer with the group, and let the wolf cub go.” She keeps going.
Fope, you are taking your time searching for clues, so I will give you an advantage on this Survival check.
Survival: 17
To whatever extend it does not compromise his search efforts, if alone, Føpé will move quietly and via shadows. stealth: 10

Greeting, the town, might we come inside and seek safety from the perils of the road

Edit: didn’t see Kif’s post when I posted. ;)
Kif, that was a great idea. Take inspiration if you don’t have it and we’ll pretend you did it. I’ll post more later.
