You follow the path, which begins southwest but with a slight bend is directed almost due south. The path is a bit narrower here, though still wide enough for a cart. Barnaby and Kif hear (despite their poor rolls) a creature stumble a bit, nearby in the woods. Looking up, both Barnaby and Kif see two large humanoid creatures skulking along, about 30 feet behind you and off to the west. Their form is shrouded in the woods, but they look large and generally unfriendly.
Let's go to the map!
You are not in combat (yet), but place yourselves where you think you would in relation to each other and tell me what you would like to do. And roll initiative.
Barnaby was walking alongside Lucento telling the story of when the great adventurer The Viscount of Ventillie picked up a stranger in his wandering. The stranger turned out to be a doppelgänger. That encounter brought The Viscount closer to death than when he fought the Sphinx of Goben with no arms other than an ordinary pitchfork.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Chubs stops singing to listen attentively. He loves stories! He frequently interrupts with comments like And what did the Viscount do next?! and I wish I could have seen that!
Ok. Everybody gets to go before the creatures in the forest. Their dice are terrible.
I'm not saying whether you should fight or not, here, but if you start doing combat-y stuff then that's what we'll do. The creatures in the woods do not seem friendly, that's for sure.
Well this doesn’t look good. Why don’t we ever encounter cute little kittens wandering this land?
Barnaby casts protection from good and evil on Kif and steps back fifteen feet to get a little distance. Finally he raises his staff menacingly and gives the beats the hairy eyeball.
When Barnaby stops his story, Chubs follows his gaze to the creatures. Kiff readies for action, and Chubs understands. He brings his mind to the tranquility of joy, the inner peace that comes with friends, drinking buddies, and song. And then he draws his sword.
His blubber bounces as he calmly bounds through the woods, whirling around him almost hypnotically. His sword gracefully slips through the air, left to right toward his foe: Attack: 12 Damage: 10 and then, following the momentum of the whirling blade and spinning shoulders, with his off hand, flub streaming, he grabs the creature's head forward into his head but, Attack: 12 Damage: 5, and finally in a varietal fury of blows attempts to bring his knee up toward its groin. Attack: 25 Damage: Unable to parse dice roll.
Lucento watches, almost entranced, as Chubs whimsically engages the uncertain forms lurking in the shadows, and, in an abundance of caution, casts Bless on all three of his companions.

Do we all know they're there?
Kif will stop, turn to face them and ready an attack if they attack and get close enough
If they attack..obvious hostile intention 26 attack, damage 9

Yes. Kif and Barnaby would have said so.
