Barnaby will let the others search the room while he sits cross legged just outside the door for ten minutes ritually casting detect magic. He will then gaze about the room and back the way they came looking for an aura that indicates things of arcane significance.
It is not evocation. It is some other one that I needn't figure out, for our narrative purposes.
As Barnaby inspects the footlocker, a semi-ghostly figure emerges from the wall with a shriek. It is a female figure, and you recognize her - despite the gaunt features, stretched grotesque and thin by centuries of undeath - as Mrs. Durst.
She hovers just above the ground for a moment. You may speak with her if you would like.
Damn it, if Kiff and Barnaby aren't going to run away sensibly, Føpé will slide into a shadow so he can see what's going on and come to their aid when they need it.
Barnaby backs as far as he can from the apparition and looks on to see how things get on between her and Kif. Barnaby is sad that he can't also be behind Fope.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Gods damn it, Føpé steps forward letting Barnaby behind him. Whispering Kiff, we found her husband hanging.
To the apparition, engaging his charm for an honest answer that doesn't involve killing the party (Persuasion: 20), How may we help you, magnificent one?
She grins. Did he not greet you in the housssse??? Perhaps he is resssting in his room, above. . . She cackles softly. Did you check the maaaaaid's chamber??? Sometimes, he goes therrrrrre. . .
You get the sense that she is entertaining herself.
Well, Elizabeth, perhaps we did, we did hear some laughing and such. We met Rose and Thorn too, they asked us to help with some monster in the basement, do you know what they may be worried about...they looked so scared. Would you mind if we looked around, and maybe looked in this chest for tools that may help us help the children?
Didn't we hear ghostly noises down hear earlier, do we still hear them
The moaning is harder to hear in this room than it was when you heard it elsewhere. It was loudest in the hallways near where you fought the ghouls and where Kif fell into the pit.

You are already helping me, little one, more than you know. . .
Excellent! If there's anything else, don't hesitate to scream. Hearing a moan in the distance, Coming! Føpé calls to the moaner. He attempts to yank Kiff with him toward the exit.
Hang on Føpé, Barnaby looks like he wants to say something. Besides, We've seen so much terrifying shit in this house that I'm growing a bit numb to this Spooky Town stuff.

You can't tell whether it's locked, just from looking at it. Also you stub your toe.

Assuming everyone waits without touching anything, when you come back in you detect magic auras within the chest.
Barnaby will take an action to determine what school of magic is emanating from the chest. He will take particular cautions if it is evocation.
Barnaby will then investigate the chest for traps: 7

Føpé the cowardly, giving a tug on Kiff's armor to signal that maybe we should all leave, will casually back out of the room. Stealth: 23
Hah hah. She does not appear to notice you.
Good day Mrs. Durst, how might you be?
Kif clutches the silver ax

Say, ma'am, would your husband be around as well

Oh those little BOTHERS. Yesss, you may look in the chest, if all of your friends wait outside....
I want to make sure Barnaby gets a chance to hop in with some dialogue, if he wants, too.
