Maldorn grabs his fishing tackle (specifically the wooden rod), and offers to lead the group this time. "I can prod the mud as we carefully move forward. If you all agree to this plan, you should try to follow my footsteps to the exact inch. That should be a safe approach, as Jambiya proposed."
He then thinks for a moment "Or perhaps one of you folk with night eyes should lead the way..."
Anafry would walk up to the edge of the mud and poke the tip of her rapier into the sludge. "Hey.. if any of you want to go first, be my guest" She would add as she holds her arm up to her nose.
Jack doesn't have to step, so he can move ahead of the group or beside the group without being affected by the mud.
Anafrey, you stick your rapier into the mud a few times, going further out with each stick by leaning forward. The depth of mud before hitting "solid ground" is deeper with each stick, though the last and next-to-last seem to be almost the same depth: about six inches.
As with Anafrey's sticks, each of Maldorn's steps is deeper before the sinking ceases. After a few steps, the depth equalizes at about six inches. Each step takes work. Naturally, the steps are further apart to reduce the number needed. Each time the leg is lifted, the mud doesn't want to release the foot, making it hard to pull it free. The toes spread in reflex to try to keep the boot on. The arms are extended to help keep balance. It's a mess!
Half way across, the group hears three smaller pops as three small creatures rise up out of the mud, two to the left and one to the right. They look like balls of mud with wings.
What's the party's marching order? If you want to go ahead and roll your own initiative, you may. I'll roll anyone left.
OCC: well, I did say Maldorn was going in after Jack, so I’m guessing the marching order is something more like this: Jack, Maldorn, Anafrey, Ebokk, Erric, Jambiya.
You all are walking up the center of this mud-filled cavern. The mud makes it difficult terrain. The space is approximately 50 feet long by 25 feet wide. Almost all of that is covered in mud. One of the mud creatures is five feet to Maldorn's left (also in melee with Anafrey). The second creature is five feet to Ebokk's left (also in melee with Anafrey and Erric). The third creature is five feet to Anafrey's right (also in melee with Maldorn and Ebokk).
Erric, you have never heard of any specific creature called a "mud bat".
"Damn! Getting attacked by shit with wings!" Anafrey would shout before swinging her rapier and dagger wildly towards the fluttering creatures overhead.
Jambiya steps back as far as she can go towards the entrance, without leaving the cavern (notably at half speed because difficult terrain). Then she will point her witchy stick at the one Anafrey just swung on, and shoot it with a crackling beam of energy.
Action: Attack "mud bat" with Eldritch Blast, 14 to hit, for 2 force damage
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Which mud bat? 2
Anafrey analyzes each of their attackers and determines the one behind her on her left seems to be the appropriate target. She swings her weapons, cutting into the strange mud-like physiology. It gurgles a protest as it takes damage. Before it can counter, Jambiya steps back out of the mud onto the edge of solid ground (five feet back) and releases a blast of energy, which hits the edge of the creature and causes it to spin 360 degrees as it hovers.
Erric, you're up! The mud bat to your northwest has been injured. That's the only one in melee with you.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Erric jolts as the weird mud things attack, wishing the party didn't keep breaking rapiers, and draws his daggers. He tries to stab both into the injured one closest to him, with a bit of a yelp.
Attack: 19 Damage: 1
Two weapon fighting Attack: 1 Damage: 4
(Also forgot halflings reroll ones, so that previous skill check would be 11)
Also the code didn't execute on mobile - the attacks should be +5, and damage for the first one is +3, so 4 damage on the first. And the second attack lost the rr1 code and didn't get rerolled, so here's the second again: 17
Both of Erric's attacks hit, bits of mud flying as his blades slice through the strange creature. Again, it makes its gurgling protest, but it is still alive.
Ebokk hunkers down, holding his shield ready to defend himself and his friends.
Maldorn, you're up! One uninjured creature is five feet west, another uninjured creature is five feet southeast, and the third injured creature is 10 feet south by southwest.
Maldorn's blades both hit his target, cutting into the "mud bat" to his left.
DM rollz: 112
The creature Maldorn attacked attacks him back. The mud parts, forming what must be its mouth. It belches viscid mud at the hunter. (DEX save DC11: 7) The amount of mud is incredible. It envelopes Maldorn, restraining him.
The creature to Ebokk's left attacks Anafrey. It also belches forth a torrent of mud. (DEX save DC11: 9) Anafrey is also restrained. (Adding 3 for bardic inspiration.) The mud splashes against Anafrey, but she is able to dodge most of it. She sports a brown stain, but is not restrained.
The creature to Anafrey's right also attacks her, taking advantage of her inability to dodge. Two arms appear out of the ball of mud, each ending with a balled up fist. One of them flies out at Anafrey. (Fist attack: 16, damage: 3 bludgeoning damage) The white-haired rogue grunts as the tiny fist makes contact.
Anafrey and Jambiya, you're up! Anafrey, you may attack at disadvantage any of the three creatures. At the end of your turn, you may roll a DEX saving throw at disadvantage to try to break free of the mud. The DC remains at 11.

"As long as 'Jack' has the torch, you should be able to see, no?" Jambiya asks.
