Anafrey, Erric, Jambiya and Maldorn march into the entry hall. Anafrey, Erric and Jambiya doesn't notice anything but lots of blackened debris and signs that this room has been exposed to the elements for quite some time. Almost immediately, Maldorn notices another piece of paper. This one is two-sided.
No one hears anything telling. Looking clockwise around the room with the archway through which you just entered at six o'clock, there's a door at 9, a hall at 10:30 heading left, a second door at 12, and another hall at 1:30 heading right.
"Huh... grim of outlook this Lord." Anafrey says after reading the new pages. She's stretching her arms toward the ceiling on her tip toes. "Well... seems they're all dead, have been for years, does this mean we can head back? My flasks are feeling a bit light."
Maldorn reads the piece of paper and then passes it around. Once Anafrey reacts, he adds: "Aye, and a grim situation too."
Looking at Jambiya: "You were right, Yun' Jambiya. I doubt this 'phantasmal grasp' was meant in any way other than literal in this paragraph."
To Erric: "Being indoors and in close-quarters is not for me. Why don't you have a look down those hallways, Ceric?"
Maldorn then tries to remember if, over the years, he has heard about this family and/or place from anyone other than Seldom and his recent story (history: 6... of course... he can't even remember his companions' proper names; of course he won't remember any useful stories... sigh).
"No, we can't head back, not until we find out what happened. Maybe we can put her at ease, let them both relax. I wonder what happened to him, and why his journal is scattered about. Is there anything down that hall, Erric?"

ey/em/eirs, or they/them works, too (just not he). Role-playing since that keep on those borderlands. I love it so.
"Indoors and close-quarters in a haunted house isn't for me either Maldorn, so I think if we're going to do this, we'll have to do it together," Erric says to the ranger. (OOC: Erric was just looking down the hall, perception 13) "Do you see any sign of the kenku that's still skulking around here? Did it come inside? You're familiar enough with the tracks at this point..."
He tries to go over to one of the windows to open it up and get some light inside to see better.
"If anyone's got any kind of protection from ghosts or evil things, now would be the time to speak up! It seems like we could find out more for Dirk to give him some actual answers. But I'm not sure what we'll find. I'm more interested in why the kenku were outside and attacking us on sight. What if there's something else going on? What if the 'acolyte' who talked to Dirk knew more than what she said? Dirk could be in danger if we don't get to the bottom of this."
What Erric isn't saying is that this would be an amazing story and though he's completely terrified, leaving now would make it an unfinished one and he can't abide those.
Anafrey rolls her eyes, descending from her stretch. "Very well, I'll have a look around." She crouches a little and explores the hallways carefully, doing her best to keep low and quiet in her state. She doesn't enter any doorways but peeks into any open rooms before circling back to the group.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Jambiya will stay right where she is, looking the various pages of the journal over. "He really does love her," she says softly. She will look up into the rafters, and call out, softly again, "Clarice? Are you here? We're friends, and we'd like to help you."
Persuasion: 14 (add another +2 if Clarice is drunk!)

Looking down the left hall, which appears to be about 15 feet long, Erric and Anafrey see an opening into what might be a pretty big room at the end. There is an open door about half way down on the right and a closed door across from it. Looking down the right hall, which appears to be about 30 feet long and is a dead end, the duo sees two doors on the right — the first open, the second closed — and another open door on the left.
You can see remnants of furniture and artwork, but the fire has rendered all of it a loss. It's quite amazing that the pages of the diary have survived. Almost as if by magic!
Maldorn looks about, but the debris and litter makes picking out the kenku tracks impossible inside.
Jambiya listens for any response after her calling out to Clarice, but she hears nothing aside from the sounds of nature coming from all the fire-created openings in the building.
Anafrey returns to the entryway, and looks around for a moment then looks at Jambiya and Maldorn, "Wait... where's the halfling? Well... nevermind, if we're going to investigate we should start searching the rooms one by one, but stick together. We've no one but each other to guard our backs. I think we should start from the front and work our way back in a methodical fashion... I... oh gods I'm almost sober!"
[ooc : @Erric I'm just playing with the rolls since I got a 7 perception vs your 15 stealth]
"I agree we should search together, and Anafrey, I'll follow your lead," Erric says, looking around at the holes in the house. He's quietly, faintly humming a tune to himself, and if you got really close you could hear it and see his fingers gently snap twice every once in a while.
He looks down at the floorboards. Is there any sign there is a basement or crawlspace?
Anafrey's hand goes to the hilt of her blade and she jumps back to face the voice speaking behind her, but she relaxes once she realizes that it's just Erric. "Ah... there he is. Let's start o... what are you looking at Erric?" She shakes her head, "Nevermind, let's check this room first." She tries the door that was immediately to the left of the entrance (9 o'clock as we entered).
Jambiya will follow Anafrey and Erric, but she doesn't seem nervous. She's convinced this is some poor lost soul who just needs a kind word. Thoughts of the fourth Kenku have completely fled. "Do you imagine the fire was a natural event, and nobody was here to put it out? The pages don't appear burned..." She holds one up to the light. "Could they be magical somehow? Clues left by Clarice?"

OOC: There's plenty of light coming in through holes and windows.
The group files through the door to their left. The wood is swollen and takes some elbow grease to open, but it finally gives. The chamber behind was probably a drawing room, though it is now hard to tell, due to extensive damage from fallen debris. Maldorn takes a quick glance around and notices a few things: A slightly blackened rapier rests amid the debris, a bottle catches the light within a large pile of burnt wood, and two more pages from the diary catch his eye.
This room as three doorways: the door through which the four just entered, a closed door to their right, and an opening with no door straight ahead into that large open room Anafrey and Erric saw earlier at the end of the left hallway.
Erric goes over to the rapier and bottle Maldorn seems to be looking at and prods both gently with the tip of his own rapier. He's more interested in the bottle than the burnt rapier. Does he recognize the bottle? Is it full of a liquid he's seen before?
He'll then want to take a look at the door to the right, unless the group's headed to the big open space.
OOC: should we be pushing for regular perception checks in each room/at each interesting new area, if that's basically what we're all doing? And for sounds we'd be listening for? I'm assuming you're telling us the interesting stuff as we go, and the rest of the room's just charred ash? Erric's not a perceptive fellow but he's constantly going to be peering at and listening to everything.

Are there any belonging still in the house? Burnt up? Looted? Rotten? The hall to the right, what can Erric see down it?

How open is the house to the elements? Is there sunlight enough to easily see by?
