Anafrey, looks back at her allies, then back at the statue of the kenku. "Huh..." is all she manages, and she enters the room scanning for danger before going to investigate the statue.
Maldorn, you've heard a lot of tales about creatures that can turn other creatures to stone. While you've never witnessed the act, you've heard plenty of stories about medusas, basilisks, cockatrices, and gorgons.
Before the Inn was built, Jambiya remembers once overhearing Dirk tell someone a tale about how he and some adventuring partners had encountered a gorgon — a giant iron-clad bull — underneath a mountain in the south. During the battle, their mage had begun to cast a powerful spell when the great beast's breath had turned the mage to stone with one petrifying exhale. For 24 hours, the others alternated between attempting to hurt and running and hiding from the gorgon to avoid the same horrific fate. After 24 hours, fate smiled upon them, and the beast was passing in front of the mage when the petrification wore off. The spell was completed at last and killed the gorgon, saving everyone.
When Jambiya attempted to question him about it later, Dirk playfully refused to talk about it, and she remembers Brunthor giving the human a disappointed look, but not saying anything about it, either.
Jambiya will relate this story to her companions. "We haven't seen any tracks like a giant bull would make, but it could be something like that. It wore off in the story, so maybe this will, too?" She tries to rock the Kenku to judge how heavy it would be to move.

ey/em/eirs, or they/them works, too (just not he). Role-playing since that keep on those borderlands. I love it so.
"Aye,"Maldorn agrees with Jambiya's tale-based opinion. "If not one such beast, there are others that I know of that could achieve similar results. Most, are beyond my abilities as a hunter, I'm afraid..."
Maldorn then turns to Anafrey: "What have you discovered about this... 'statue'?"
As the group is gathered near the statue, a slight crunching sound catches everyone's ear. You all turn in unison to see trying to approach from the far side of an overturned cabinet (10 feet away) a hideous hybrid of lizard, bird, and bat almost twice the size of a duck. When it realizes it has been spotted, it opens its beak and utters a jarring call, which sounds like a chicken being drown.
Maldorn:
Maldorn recognizes the creature as a cockatrice. Maybe the biggest one he's heard of.

Erric blurts out "for all that is good and holy you are the ugliest turkey I've ever seen, and I've seen some ugly turkeys!" and casts vicious mockery on the beast (dealing 1 psychic damage and giving it disadvantage on its next attack roll if it fails a DC 13 WIS save).
He'll also dart to the door they came from, close it as a free action, and dart back to the door they were headed toward with the hope of starting a trend of getting out of the room, saying "I don't think it can open doors??"
Jambiya will back towards that second door Erric is holding open, firing another beam of green and white crackly force at the creature. "This could be the creature! Be careful!" Then she will exit the room, standing ready by the doorway (but in the next room).
Action: Eldritch Blast at the thing, 8 to hit, for 6 force damage. Move: Leave the room through the door Erric did not just close

As Erric laces his insult with magic, the creature gurgles and shakes its head. He then closes the door through which they entered and moves diagonally toward the other door, encouraging everyone to follow. Still watching the creature, Maldorn doesn't even notice the halfling sliding by him with ease and out the door (V12). Jambiya follows. Flustered by the hideous creature, and hurrying to follow Erric, she haphazardly throws another ball of energy at their would-be attacker, but it hits the wall. She moves past Erric and finds herself in the right hallway (W12).
Angered, but dazed by Erric's attack, the creature stomps up to Anafrey (V9) and attempts to bite her. (bite attack: 20; damage: 3 piercing damage) (DM roll for Anafrey: 13) The creature's sharp beak leaves an angry gash along one of her arms.

"Hey where do you... what the?!" Anafrey exclaims as the chicken-lizard draws blood. "Was going to let you live out of sheer novelty, but now it's the blade for you!"
She draws her shortsword and thrusts. She curses as she slips on the kitchen's slick floor, and her blade slides past the beast.

Snapping out of the intense stare he has been giving this creature, Maldorn responds to a passing Jambiya's comment: "This is definitely the creature, Jambiya. Try to stay away from this cockatrice." Ignoring his own advice, Maldorn steps around the kenku statue (V10 for that delicious flanking!)
His bow still stowed, cigarette still on the lips, Maldorn pulls two daggers from his belt: "I hate close-quarter's combat... But I'm not leaving you here alone, Niceriver."

Assuming yes, Erric will rush back into the room after he sees his two big allies engage and not flee like he envisioned, worried that he abandoned them. He's not doing that again.
He pokes at the ugly turkey with his rapier, flanking from an available space:
OOC: Maldorn, in order to flank, you need to be at W9, which is where I've put you because you said you wanted to flank. Erric, flanking only works when an ally is directly across from you, so there is no way for you to flank. So, I took your first roll, which is a 4.
Maldorn moves up behind the cockatrice as it is dodging Anafrey's shortsword, and, pulling his two daggers, slices twice into the creature's back from behind. The creature makes another drowning chicken call, but doesn't yet look very hurt. Erric hurries back into the room and snuggles up beside Maldorn (W10), thrusting his rapier forward at the monstrosity. But, like Anafrey, he loses his footing due to all the debris littering the floor, and his thrust sends the pointy end of his weapon shooting between the creature's legs.

Ah got it, I thought flanking benefits applied to everyone surrounding the flanked creature, my bad.
Erric will use luck (his second of the day) to reroll that 4, so we can either take the existing second roll from the advantage, or take this one, your choice: 18 (for some reason the bonuses didn't add in the previous rolls - Erric has +5 to hit and +3 to damage, so if it hits, that 1d8 roll of 4 would be a 7 total.
As Erric's foot slips and his aim falters, his elbow strikes the kenku statue, causing him to jerk his arm up in reaction, and his rapier piercing the cockatrice's side.

“Something tells me that this is the fourth birdman we were looking for, and not some commissioned work,” Maldorn states his thoughts.
Would Maldorn know of any creature capable of transforming someone into stone (nature: 22)
