Jambiya blinks, and quickly says, "Yeah, they just want shoes. Stop fighting them." She puts her hands up in a non-threatening gesture.
Then in Dwarvish:
"The surface has lots of shoes, and we can arrange for a lot of them to come here. They are cheap, too. You don't have to steal them. We can help you get as many as you need. We don't want to fight."

OOC: totally forgot about the boots (that felt special when we picked them up!), and I can't believe we didn't try to identify them. What did/do they look like? Erric grabbed the bloody backpack and stowed it, and I see it now in his notes tab (when we get money etc, I don't divide it up mid-adventure when I'm the one who grabs it, so I just grab the text and paste it into the notes section. There's also two blue quartz stones, and 13 gp, 8 sp, 56 cp.
Anyhow, back to the current predicament, Erric looks to Jambiya to see if he should stop grappling. He has Jack stop moving Erric's shoe around.
"What is happening? Jambiya, they're listening to you, which is amazing. I can let this one go if you think it smart. How long will we have new friends? Can we ask them about grimlocks and other things while they're not attacking us?"
As the enchantment wears off, the grappled derro shakes his head and then looks disgruntled and gives Jambiya the stink eye, but the other two look at each other. They exchange a little bit on conversation and then say something to Jambiya. The one Erric is still holding onto motions toward the north tunnel.
Jambiya:
The free one repeats Jambiya's words to the other, "'Lots of boots'."
The other looks suspicious, but says back, "We should ask Diinit."
The free one thinks for a second and the nods. "Let's take them to see Diinit."
The one Erric is holding onto says to Jambiya, "Come with us, and tell Chief Diinit about these boots."
Maldorn releases the tied up derro. “Jambyia, Erric and I found special boots in that ogre’s belongings. Erric carries them now. I fear that might be the pair these little folk here are after. It looks like you can communicate with them, so please use that information wisely. Also, care to share what they are saying? Ebokk?”
"They just want any boots? They can have the ones I was wearing. I did forget about the ones we got from the ogre's head-pack, so I at least have backup. But Maldorn's right, we should keep those unmentioned and stowed for now. Thrakk, we're going to see what's going on. They seem a little addled, but maybe not so dangerous. Jambiya, can you ask them about the grimlocks?"
How's Thrakky doing? He look like he wants to "get rid" of the derro? Do the derro seem... addled?
Anafrey would back up from the creatures and the look at her flail. After giving it a shake she would grumble aloud. "I bet you knew what they were saying.. why can't you tell me" She would say to the flail before putting it back on her belt. If anyone looks at her while she says this she blushes a bit and shakes her head. "If I am stuck with this thing it could at least be helpful.."
The derro that had been grappled and then put on the ground dusts itself off and narrows its eyes at Maldorn and Anafrey when it is released before walking over with the the other two toward the tunnel going north. They look back to make sure the others are following. "The chief is this way," one of them says in Dwarvish.
Thrakk looks a bit confused, but also a bit curious. You've never met a derro before, so you have no idea what a non-addled derro acts like, but these derro don't seem particularly addled. Just a bit zealous.
They don't seem to react to any of your languages, Maldorn.
Anafrey, you think you might hear a quiet chuckle in the back of your mind.
Erric begins to follow, Jack ahead of him, holding Erric's shoe aloft, as high as he can (how tall is Jack?), spinning it slowly in place. Erric's trying to make it seem like he's Kind Of A Big Deal When It Comes To Footwear. He takes off his other shoe, holding it in his hand, familiarly. Because really, only monsters wear one shoe. And halflings are perfectly comfortable walking barefoot. Erric just wore shoes to be fashionable and to fit in. He's got well-groomed, bright red hair on the tops of each feet.
He looks back at the group with the sort of expression that communicates, "descend once more into the lunacy with me, friends, for it is a familiar place, and we are at home here."
Maldorn shrugs at Erric in agreement and follows along, stowing his weapons and making sure Sagitta is well tucked away and hidden in his pockets. While walking, the old ranger taps his pipe on a rock, or a nearby wall, as to clean the smoking device.
Then, when one of the derro looks back and catches Maldorn's gaze, he tries communicating once more, this time in his mother tongue (Common): "Do you understand me?"
I'd say Jack is the same height as Erric. Why not?
The party follows the derro into the north tunnel, stepping around the random splatters and smears of ooze that continue up the path. Jack leads with Erric following closely behind — shoes on display. Jambiya follows the bard, her floating orbs providing much-needed light. Maldorn follows her with Thrakk, Ebokk and Anafrey bringing up the rear in that order.
Maldorn, as you ask your question, the derro simply narrows its eyes at you and then looks ahead again.
You haven't traveled far up the serpentine tunnel when the sounds of voices speaking dwarvish start to be heard. Two voices are speaking. One — most likely the derro that ran with Jambiya's boot — is speaking excitedly and a bit warily with another about the party and Jambiya's boot and the three derro who haven't yet appeared. The other, who sounds calmer, is asking questions.
One of the three follow-up derro says loudly, "We are here. We bring the surface dwellers. They promise many boots."
The ooze-splattered passage leads into a large cave unlike any you've ever seen. A band of small, degenerate, dwarflike creatures dwells here. They are a wild-eyed rabble, led by a wiry elder bearing a staff topped with an upturned skeletal foot.
But what makes this cave so different are the boots. Lining every inch of the base of the wall, countless boots stand proudly, both adorned and filled with all manner of what would best be described as junk.
The three derro walk over to stand around the elder, who must be the chief they've mentioned. The creature puffs out his chest and steps forward. "Welcome," he says proudly in Dwarvish.
Erric gets ready to inspire Jambiya because it seems like something important is happening but he doesn’t know what. (Inspiring in-game as a readied bonus action if she does something critical. Erric still doesn’t have many of these between precious long rests!)
Unsure of what to do and not understanding the words being exchanged, Maldorn simply bows when he sees Jambiya doing the same. Nonetheless, he can't help letting out a "There are a lot of boots here..." in Common.
OOC > Remember, with the Ring of Inspiration, Jambiya gets advantage on use of Inspiration dice, and can bank up to three Inspiration dice for up to one hour!

Ebokk watches and listens carefully as Thrakk appears to be patiently waiting for something.

Jambiya relates what the derro have been saying (go read the spoilers) and will translate from here on out (so we can dispense with the spoilers).
She says to the derro, “We would be pleased to visit with your Chief, maybe we can make a deal for boots.”

After failing to be understood in Gnomish, Maldorn says the following in both Sylvan and Elvish, just in case it earns a response from the derro:
"Do you understand me?"

Maldorn looks to Erric after asking the simple question in Common, as to say "I hope they don't know our mother tongue."
"Yeah, you guys will really have put your... boot in it if they do!" Jambiya giggles at her joke. "Let's follow them, I'm sure it'll be fine."
