The creature appears to "look" at Ebokk upon his exclamation, though it has no eyes that anyone has noticed. It then lurches to the side as Erric yells, but his crossbow bolt still sinks into its wrinkled flesh. Almost immediately, Sagitta is put upon the unknown entity, sinking his fangs into it as he flies by. It appears to still be trying to hobble away when Anafrey raises a boot and brings it down, smooshing the creature against the ground. As Jambiya begins casting a spell, Ebokk raises a hand to her. "Hold!" He cautiously leans down. Half flattened, one broken crossbow bolt still embedded, the brain with legs is no longer moving. He looks up. "Maybe we should slice it up just in case."
As someone begins using a blade to make sure the creature is dead by turning it into several creature pieces, Ebokk comments, "This couldn't have been a mind flayer. The derro leader said they were humanoid, and this is definitely not humanoid." He looks at Thrakk. "And I don't see any way for it to have been Thrakk's brain. His head is still whole."
After "slicing" is wrapped up, we can return and pick up the earlier posts above we didn't get to yet.
Erric nearly drops his crossbow in relief when the weird brain thing, then looks at Maldorn, Jambiya, and Anafrey in amazement at how quickly they all reacted. "Eww. That's gross. Okay so if it's not a mind flayer, then what is it? Maybe it controlled his brain? It looks so real."He goes over to look at Thrakk to see if the orc is, well, really truly dead. If so, he relaxes, and opens his boot, and looks at Anafrey and Jambiya. "Let's open up the boot presents to see what's inside, and then get out of here."
Jambiya nods, still coming down off the emotional surge of the sudden fight. "Yeah, let's look at the boots." She will briefly examine Brunthor's boot, stowing it in her pack if there's nothing special. She'll take a few experimental swings with the shortsword, though she's clearly not sure which end is what. If anyone wants to look at it, she will hand it over.
She saves the boot Anafrey and her passenger (and Jambiya's mother) are so interested in until last, after everyone else has looked at their boots.

"Jambiya's own boot." Nothing inside except Jambiya's foot, now.
"The boot Jambiya recognized as a match for Brunthor's on the wall at the Seldom Spring." The boot is a masterfully crafted dwarven boot (at least, that's Ebokk's comment) reinforced with fine chain and steel plates. The sword is finely crafted; feels special (read magical); and has the symbol of Tymora, a face-up coin, embedded in the pommel.
"The boot that has something small inside that catches the light (the one Anafrey was initially interested in)." Maldorn sticks his hand in this one and draws out a platinum ring with an imprint of a harp within a crescent moon upon it.
"The one with a metallic rattle (Eric's original choice)." Erric reaches in this one first and draws out a pair of silver bracelets.
"The boot with dark-colored rocks inside that turned out to be shiny balls? (Eric's current choice)." This one, he turns sideways, and one of four hard, black, glassy stones with a natural sheen rolls into his palm. The one (which is representative of the four) fills his halfling palm. Just holding it and looking at it, he can feel its sharp edges threatening to cut his skin.
"The one that rattles but we can't see anything inside. (Maldorn's own choice)" After admiring the ring and showing it to Sagitta, Maldorn turns over the next boot and a stone with a milky bluish sheen rolls into his palm.
"One of the boots with a stoppered vial inside, preferably the heaviest of them (Eric's earlier suggestion." 1 or 2? 2 A little bored with the rock, Maldorn reaches into his third boot and pulls out a vial containing a muddy liquid and labeled "Animal Friendship" in Elvish. He shakes the vial and a fish scale briefly slides along the inside of the glass before disappearing again.
OOC: I think that's all but Anafrey's special one. Let me know if I missed one. If you want to try to learn more about anything, roll a d20, and I'll apply the proper modifier.
Anafrey glares at the last boot as Jambiya finally offers it to her. The voice, while temporarily satiated by her violence against the orc, has begun its headache-inducing tirade again. The woman tells Jambiya to look inside, and the goblin girl does so. She peers inside, but doesn't see anything. She turns over the boot and shakes it, but nothing falls out. She even tentatively sticks her hand inside, but doesn't feel anything.
Anafrey would glance only momentarily at the other objects as they are revealed.. choosing instead to remain focused on the boot that seemingly calls out to her. When Jam finds to boot to be empty, the now sweating Anafrey would strain to hold out her hand. "Let me see iy..." Anafrey would strain while looking towards the boot. If Jam brings it closer, Anafrey would slide her hand into the boot.. pushing her hand all the way down to the toe and feeling around in search of anything that might be inside.
Jambiya, earlier in the boot discovery process, notes the shortsword seems somehow special, and offers it to anyone who would like to use a shortsword.
After finding nothing in or about the special final boot, "No, nothing," Jambiya hands it to Anafrey, and watches carefully as the woman sticks her hand inside. "Maybe if you put it on... no, like, on your foot."

Can Erric begin to look over each of the items in turn and identify their properties? Or would that take an hour each? He watches Anafrey wrestle with the boot and nods when Maldorn and Jambiya suggest putting it on, though he looks back down the tunnel and wonders where the other one might be.
He notes that he can use a short sword but only if no one else wants the beautiful weapon. Do the spheres seem mechanical or magical? Either way he shows them to Maldorn, under the assumption that they might be related to hunting or traps of some kind.
If he sees Maldorn’s ring with the harp imprint, his curiosity is transparently quite piqued.
I forgot about the spheres. Erric looks at the small metal spheres. They're very similar to ball bearings, but larger and less shiny. They have a good heft to them. He thinks they'd probably make good ammunition or some part of a trap. Maldorn agrees. Maldorn, roll to find out if you know what these are.
Roll to rack your brain about the ring, Erric. Yes, if you are in physical contact with an object for a short rest (at least an hour), you can learn about it like the identify spell.
Jambiya, you don't remember your father mentioning a lost sword in the story, but it's entirely possible that he or one of his adventuring party lost a sword during the scuffle.
Maldorn, you don't recognize the symbol on the ring as anything important. Perhaps it is a trinket for a bard. The stone, however, you recognize as an uncut moonstone.
Anafrey, grimacing and on the edge of screaming obscenities because of the dwarf's incessant howling, sticks her hand into the boot. As her fingers probe the inside, she feels cool metal links. She crooks her fingers around her find and draws out a necklace. Hanging from her fist is a thin silver chain with a dangling silver charm. She draws the charm closer to her eyes. Made primarily out of silver, but also inlaid with blue crystals, is an upright mace in front of a tall boot. In her mind, she asks herself what it means. It is at that point that she realizes the dwarf has stopped screaming. Instead, he almost sobs, "Marthammor Duin."

And yes, after examining the ring and not being able to discern anything special about them, Maldorn passes it to Erric.
Regarding the stone, Madorn says: "I found a gem in one of the boots. A moonstone to be precise. I gather we can sell it for a good amount of gold."
Concerning the magical shortsword, the old man makes the following argument. "I have been getting into a lot more melee scraps than I'd like since I have met you. I usually have to rely on my daggers for that, but could certainly use that sword instead. That said, if anyone thinks the blade can be put to better use, I shall not argue."
"Who.. or what is Marthammor Duin" Anafrey asks aloud.. as much to the flail as to her companions as she moves to put on the necklace, looking down at the symbol on her neck.
Well, Jambiya will search her memory for stories by her dads that include that name, though her History is predicated on it being n one of their stories, so even a high roll might not result in anything... History: 5
The goblin girl shrugs. "Never heard of it. Ebokk?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Maldorn, you're not exactly sure what the silver balls are. Ebokk, you have never seen the engraving before. Jambiya, you've never heard of Marthammor Duin. Has Ebokk? 4 Yes he has.
Immediately after Anafrey asks the question verbally, she is immediately gifted with several memories that are not her own, but she is living them as if they are her own.
The first is a scene full of light. A temple. Children laughing. Anafrey is one of the laughing children. She is a child running just behind another running, laughing child. Two adult dwarves lean down, hug Anafrey, hug the other child, then hands are taken, and the family enters together.
Dinner time at home. Anafrey sits at the table with her father and sister. Mother brings food to the table and sits. Father reaches out his hands, and the four form a chain around the table. He says a prayer of thanks over the food. As he speaks, Anafrey watches the silver pendant swing from father's neck.
And now, Anafrey is slaving away at a forge. She is desperate to save her clan. She cries out for help. A voice responds. It is not the voice she expects, but she listens anyway. The flindbar is forged. Yeenoghu laughs.
As the memories wash over her, Anafrey sighs. "Marthammor Duin forsook me," the voice whispers sadly in her head. "I called out to him, and he forsook me."
She puts on the necklace and feels a kind of strength fill her. She immediately feels like her psyche has been released from some kind of grip. She knows she can put the flail down now if she wants.
"Marthammor Duin is a dwarven god," Ebokk is saying. "While Moradin is the god of creation, Marthammor Duin is worshipped by wanderers and the curious." He looks curiously at Anafrey. "You knew this is his symbol, yet you ask who he is."
