Maldorn absentmindedly responds to Erric, finally. He waves his non-serpent-wielding hand at the bard and says: "Don't worry, Weric, there are no rocks." Refocusing on Jambiya's new friend, the ranger reaches into one of his many pouches and offers up a piece of dried meat. He looks at Jambiya as if to say 'this may help' and then offers another piece to Sagitta so the serpent doesn't become jealous.
“Oh, of course! I don’t really know much about animals...” she says softly. Jambiya takes the meat and moves slowly a few feet closer to the winged lizard, holding it out. “Are you hungry? Here’s a little food.” She glances back at Maldorn. “See, Sagitta likes it.”

"We'll find out what happened, Ebokk," Erric says with a bit more confidence than he feels. "I know we will."
He takes another minute to listen for any sign of movement. He turns to Anafrey. "We have the object of our quest. Do we look a bit farther down the passage to see what's there? Or head back up and hope we can get to safety?"
Anafrey would take a moment to feel the heft of the weapon in her hand and examine the quality of the weapon before stopping to look at Erric. "Well.. I am all for getting out of here" She would say as she secures the flail to her belt. "But if we think the answer to what happened to Ebokk's father lies down that passage... than I suppose we can push onward a bit." She would add as she wipes her white hair from her face. She would then remove the rapier from her belt and hold it outward handle first. "Thanks for letting me borrow the rapier. If Ebokk is OK with me using this flail, I shouldn't need it anymore." she would add with a smile.
Maldorn hands over the piece of jerky to Jambiya and watches with interest (what he can actually see). The taming of a beast is always a fascinating endeavor to the old ranger.
OOC: Can we make this count as a help action to whatever check Jambiya may roll next?
Jambiya, roll animal handling. Um ... go ahead and roll with advantage, and I'll look at the result and make a determination of how much Maldorn is actually helping.
At the speaking of his name, Ebokk looks at Anafrey. "I don't recognize the strange weapon." He looks back at the beard ring. "This is all I really want." He sighs and then looks around. "I know this is underground, so it's almost a proper burial, but it feels weird to just leave him ... sitting here."
OOC: I'm not ignoring what you've been saying to Ebokk, Erric. Just because you're not getting a response doesn't mean your posts aren't great.

"We could lay him down at least? It's up to you. Would it mean a lot to you and your family if his remains came back home for a proper burial?"
As Erric is saying this, he's stepping a bit down the cavern to take a better look at what might be at the end. (Perception: 6) He's still trying to let Ebokk have his space to grieve, but the halfing's too darn curious to not want to know what else is down there.
He has, however, been through a mirrorworld haunted house with Anafrey and the others, so he gives Anafrey a half-questioning, half-"I'm-doing-this" look as he moves maybe ten feet beyond Flindbar's skeleton, looking and listening for the next clue in the deserted gnoll island murder mystery still percolating in his subconscious.
Erric, as you move further around the corner, you instinctively direct Jack that way as well, extending the torch light. You can see that the cavern opens up, as you had previously perceived, but the floor doesn't widen. You're not sure what you're looking at from 10 or more feet away. The color of the floor changes dramatically past the width of the current passage in the next space. Then you realize you can just make out a shape 20 feet into the next space. It looks like some kind of crate.
That's when you feel a hand on your shoulder. You turn to see Ebokk standing right behind you, his face full of surprise and delight. "We could take him back to Mama?"
Jambiya, you hold out the food, which immediately catches the creature's attention. It lowers back so that its belly is right up against the uneven surface of the wall. Sloooooowly, it moves toward the food, its mouth opening and closing a crack at intervals. Once it is close enough to strike, it grabs the meat from your fingers and takes off, flying about 20 feet away and landing on the wall, but facing you again. You can see it work the meat down its throat, its eyes still on you.
Maldorn, the torch is moving away, so your end of this corridor is almost completely dark right now, but you hear the sound of the creature taking off and then landing again further away.
OOC: I went ahead and removed the Rapier, Silvered from Anafrey's inventory and re-added it to Erric's. I also added a Flail to Anafrey's inventory. If you ever decide to spend some quality time with it or have it identified, the item will change.
"Why not?" Erric says to Ebokk. "If you want to, that is. And if we're not chased out of here. We might have to decide if you'd rather bring his remains home or find out what happened to him. Hopefully we do both. Speaking of which, I see something further down, maybe a crate? Could be interesting."
He pauses, looking around. Anafrey is close, with the scary-looking flail. Maldorn and Jambiya are too far behind. "Let's go rejoin the others and tell them what we found. They were looking at the sound we heard when we got here." He beckons to Ebokk and Anafrey to slowly approach the other two, bringing the torch via Jack along with him, but very slowly, and looking for any response from them to their approach.
“Jambiya, please tell me what you see”Maldorn asks as the environment dims. Then, once Jack begins to make his way back towards the ranger, Maldorn scratches his eyes and prepares to take a good look at this leathery winged beast himself. Sagitta flicks his tongue back and forth to help it sense the creature as best as he can as well.
OOC: can Maldorn get a description of what he sees once light is brought back close to him?
Jambiya sighs. "Do you have a name at least, little flighty thing? My name is Jambiya."
She waits another moment, then turns as she hears the others coming. To them, she says softly, "I think it's a pet, or something. It ate from my hand, and it doesn't seem aggressive. What did you find of the body?"

Maldorn, with a wave of the hand, asks Erric to have Jack move the torch back into the mud room. But when he looks, the hunter can't make out the creature, despite knowing approximately where it is from the sounds it made. The walls are a modeled red brown. Jambiya glances away for just a second as the torch appears, and when she looks back, she has also lost the creature. The walls are a perfect camouflage for it.
“Oh, dwarven fudge,” Jambiya says. “I’ve lost it. Well, I don’t think it’ll hurt us. Let’s go back and see what you all have found. Maybe it’ll follow us. I wonder if it was a mascot for the ship?”

"Lost what? Was it a person? Animal? Anyway, we found Ebokk's dad's remains, and the beard ring. His skeleton is... sitting up ahead. He was holding that flail Anafrey's carrying now. Ebokk might want to bring the remains home, if we're able. Also, up ahead in the cavern there is something that looks to be a crate on the ground, which also seems to get different."
He sighs, kicking at the ground a bit. "So we can decide if we want to keep going and maybe figure out a bit more of what happened here, and possibly get in more trouble. Or we can head back to the ship, since we've done what we're supposed to do. My curiosity is pulling me toward that crate, but I don't want to act for the rest of you."
(Is any of this reminding Erric of any story he's ever heard before? Barrows, dead dwarf pirates, flying mudballs, zombies, weird dim areas... here's some vanilla d20 rolls if applicable 914612)
Maldorn sighs a bit disappointed: "She means the papery, leathery, rocky, lizardy beast that caught our senses earlier. It must be here somewhere still, but Jambiya has the right of it. We should move on and let it do as it pleases. As for the skeletal remains," The ranger looks at Ebokk apologetically if the dwarf can see and hear him: "I say we should be careful with them. Last time we saw dead things in this island we did not kill ourselves, well... they were walking and hunting Jack. Whatever happened to those dogfolk might have afflicted this dwarf too."
“Do we know what happened to him,” Jambiya asks as the group returns to the room with the body. “Maybe going further will give us some answers?” she looks to Ebokk. “I’d want to know.”
"That crate could be full of rum.." Anafrey would say looking to her companions. "Or... you know.. Other more useful things I suppose." She would add as she glances towards the dark tunnel towards the crate. Anafrey would look to the dwarven corpse and then back to the tunnel.. and then back towards her companions. "Do.. Do you think the dwarf was guarding the crate? Keeping watch on the only entrance into this room to keep people from it?"
"Sure. But maybe he was waiting for his kin to come, and we'll be allowed to retrieve it, since Ebokk is with us and he has the beard ring." Jambiya blinks in the darkness, all optimism.
