"So the beard ring could be the key all along,"Erric agrees, without a trace of sarcasm. "Okay, let's check it out. And if we see or hear anything funny, we'll stop to check it out."
Erric will resume the marching order, helping others look for anything hinky, and suggesting they look around a bit past the crate to ensure there aren't any other visitors or threats waiting beyond it. Also as he gets closer, can he tell what causes the color change on the floor?
The four original party members progress down the path — Ebokk seems to be analyzing how they might transport the remains of his father. As they get close to the opening, they realize the path continues forward in a kind of half ledge/half bridge, while the rest of the floor drops away some feet below. The ledge looks to extend about 20 feet out before it ends (the whole cavern is another 10/15 feet longer than that), and at the end is ... a large wooden chest.
Jambiya will, when she gets a chance, peer down at the lower floor. Is it stone? How far down? Is it water roiling with sharks? She pretty much expects that, at this point.

Erric rubs his fingertips together a la Raiders of the Lost Ark Indy and looks around for traps. "Every adventure tale I've ever hear or told would recommend looking for holes in the walls, traps in the floor, rolling boulders, things like that. Let's keep an eye out, hmm?"
Jambiya, what you see is that the pit is only about 20 feet deep, but its floor is highly uneven, resulting in hard stone protrusions. Anyone falling off the ledge would most likely find it hard to land without hurting themselves. The walls of the pit provide ample handholds similar to the peak's inclines, so it looks easy enough to climb up or down. You also see there is another chest in the pit.
If you're doing it for the sheer purpose of climbing, you don't need it. If you want it for other reasons ... there's a big chest, some people, and Maldorn has pitons.
"A fake one to distract thieves away from the real pirates' booty, perhaps?" Maldorn wonders out loud. "If that is the case, the distraction would be the easier to see of the two, I'd wager."
"I could shoot both chests with my longbow" Anafrey would suggest. "That way if one were some kind of mimic we would know.." She would say while looking to her companions.

"In the forest I came across all kinds of creatures pretending to be logs and rocks... I mean we just got attacked by mud! I wouldn't be surprised if a chest attacks us next!" She would exclaim as she pull s an arrow from her quiver and lets it fly towards the chest. She would then notch another arrow and launch it towards the other one.

OOC: Wow! That's astounding.
Erric also ducks, and then, not even looking to see what happened to Anafrey's bow, hands over his shortbow and quiver to her, eyes still on the chests.
He hefts his little sling, fills it with one of his shiny rocks, and lets loose at first one chest, then another.

Thank you for the laugh. :) OK, to be fair to everyone else, let's roll a fumble for that first shot: 16 — 17-18. Ammo Accident. Your quiver spills (50% strap broken, 50% you tilt it over by accident), and the remainder of your arrows / bolts fall to the floor. If you remain still you can use a bonus action to pick up one a round and still fire using your action. Otherwise you can use an action to pick up 2d8 and put them back in your quiver.
OK, so, no exploding bow.
Anafrey quickly draws an arrow, being a bit slipshod about it and doesn't realize it. As she's about to loose her arrow, her quiver shifts on her shoulder, throwing off her balance. She fires the arrow, it goes high, and then the sound of her remaining arrows clattering onto the stone floor echoes off the walls of the cavern. A few roll off the ledge/bridge to the floor 20 feet below. Saying a few choice words, she bends down and begins collecting her arrows.
Trying not to laugh (and not succeeding too well), Erric picks up where the huntress began and slings a projectile at each chest. The first rock hits the chest at the end of the ledge/bridge, makes no sound ... and sticks to it. The second rock tonks against the chest below, bouncing off.
Can Erric look for traps on the approach to the upper and lower chests? "Maybe we try the one that thunked first. Then we might know more and can try the sticky one. This place gets weirder and weirder..."
"Hmm..." Maldorn cocks his head. "Not an illusion then, but certainly a distraction," he adds while pointing at the strange chest on the ledge. "If it were alive like Shivermetimbers said, it would surely have reacted to being pelted by a rock, right?"
Maldorn then sees Erric trying to spot a trap or two on the way leading to the strange chest and tags along in looking around (using Erric's help?)

Is there anything to tie a length of rope onto near the top of the pit?

“Two chests?” Jambiya wonders aloud. “Does that seem strange to anyone else?”

Erric's still looking for any sign of traps or magic weirdness. If he sees none, he'll proceed along with Maldorn to both chests.
"I could shoot both chests with my longbow" Anafrey would suggest. "That way if one were some kind of mimic we would know.." She would say while looking to her companions.
Jambiya quirks an eyebrow. "Like something pretending to be a chest? That's just mean. Who would make something like that? But, uh, sure?"
