Maldorn holds the rope for Anafrey to go down as well: "Easy now... You are not as light as our diminutive bard," he says with a smirk across his face. Sagitta does not look amused.
Then, when he notices his companions struggling with the chest, he suggests: "A key would be nice, yes. Perhaps Eunuch's father has yet a few surprise prizes for us, then?"Maldorn says this while turning to see Ebokk fussing about. The ranger's intention was clearly to say it loud enough so to elicit a response from the dwarf, as he should have heard him. Maldorn waits for a reply from their benefactor.
While waiting, he also suggests a potential solution for the "fake" chest: "If we can manage to move it without touching it, we can just push it so it falls from the ledge and hopefully smashes open on the jagged ground down there. Perhaps Jack can give it a push?"
Erric, you can lift one side of the chest, but it is pretty heavy. Hoisting it up the 20 feet will take lots of muscle, a bit of engineering, and a strong desire.
As if answering Maldorn, the dwarf begins saying, "Oh no. Oh no!" The hunter looks back to see the dwarf being inundated with the rotted corpse as he appears to be trying to move it. Pieces are falling about, one of Ebokk's hands seems to have pushed through the torso, and the whole macabre dance seems to be falling apart. Ebokk looks horrified. Maldorn then hears a tinkle from that direction — like something falling onto the stone floor.
Maldorn finds that Ebokk is in a bit of a pickle. It's pretty dark, as the torch is about 30 feet away, and his own body keeps making shadows across the area, but the hunter is able to help the dwarf lay the body out flat on the floor, replacing parts that have come loose, so that it resembles a full body again. As he is helping, he spots and makes note of the gleam coming off a small metal object on the ground at the base of the stone the body had been sitting on. Once Ebokk seems satisfied with the arrangement of his father's corpse, Maldon picks up the object, which is a key.
"Thank you," Ebokk says, still looking at his father and unceremoniously wiping his hands on his shirt. "I'm not exactly sure how we're going to carry him out. Do we have a blanket or something we can wrap him up in?"
“I can offer you my bedroll, master dwarf, but you won’t blame me for not wanting it back. I am sure you can arrange for a new one once we are back at the mainland, right?” Maldorn suggests not so subtly.
After collecting the key and helping Ebokk put his father’s remains in the bedroll, the ranger goes back to the edge of the drop and throws the key to his companions down there: “Heads up!”
Erric was in the middle of a complicating but completely unfeaisble plan involving the illusion of a key wielded by Jack when the key hits him in the face. He picks it up, and tries it in the lock, watching for any traps...
Even with the key, it takes a few seconds to open the chest. Time did affect the mechanism a little. Untrapped, and with the right key, the top swings open to reveal (I'll go ahead and tell you, assuming you'll count all the coins and take an inventory probably at a later time) ...
826 cp
306 sp
89 gp
three pieces of an opaque light and dark blue gemstone with yellow flecks
"Anafrey.... are you seeing all this?" Erric says, very quietly. Then, more loudly, "Jambiya? Maldorn? We're going to need some help carrying all this."
Erric will grab whatever silver and gold coins he can fit in his pockets, trying to count a bit so that they can distribute things. Then he tries to fill his pack. He pays attention to the medallion, liquids, and then sees if the scroll seems to be trapped at all. If not, he will bring it up to open it with everyone else. It's made him intensely curious. To get all of this up, he will volunteer his pack to be used as a dumbwaiter, tying it to the rope, letting the others pull it up, empty it, and refilling it again once they've dropped it back down. While waiting, he will take another close look at the chest to see if there is any marking or evidence of where it came from. How old do the things in it appear to be? After thinking a bit, he says, "do you think this is pirate's treasure? And Flindbar was guarding it? And will try to defend it from anyone disturbing it? Maybe targeting the one who unlocked it?"He sounds more and more like Shaggy talking to Scooby Doo as he goes.
It takes a while to get everything up. Ebokk ends up joining the group in the effort after he comes to find out what is taking so long. Everyone is excited by the load, even Ebokk. (DM rollz: 12) Maldorn and Jambiya also notice a certain red and orange winged lizard that has slowly inched its way around to watch them from afar. The coin is divvied (206 cp, 76 sp & 22 gp per person with 2 cp, 2 sp & 1 gp left over since Ebokk said you four get all the treasure as your payment). You can either decide to divvy up the other stuff now or later. While everyone is distracted, Ebokk wanders over to the other chest. "What about this one?" he asks, motioning toward it. While the dwarf is not looking, the lid of the chest rises, and a tongue-like appendage shoots out toward him. (pseudopod attack: 24, damage: 8 bludgeoning damage)
Jambiya was in the middle of trying to entice the little dragon with a gold coin when she hears Ebokk yell. "Maybe little dragons like a little gol—what the?" She whirls, hand already crackling with force, and shoots a blast at the chest.
While still wary, the "little dragon" did seem interested in the gold coin. It's eyes dart toward the sound, and its body collapses back against the wall when Ebokk yells out.
Jambiya fires off a blast of energy, but in her attempt to not hit Ebokk, the blast goes too wide, "splashing" against the wall at the back of the cavern.
The chest opens its lid like a mouth and attempts to pull Ebokk into it. (bite attack: 6, damage: 7 piercing damage + 8 acid damage — fumble roll: 3) gets advantage versus grappled creatures, so here's the advantage roll: 9) Ebokk turns and is able to dig his heels in to keep from being pulled into the gaping maw of the chest.
The dwarf then draws his shield and holds it in front of him as he tries to backpedal to safety. "Help! Help! Help!" he calls out.
Erric freaks out and fumbles with his lute, beginning to play the first weird little melody that pops into his head. "You're simply a chest! More creepy than allllll the rest. Why don't you turn and run..." (Yes it's a Tina Turner kind of afternoon.)
Action: cast dissonant whispers for 10 psychic damage, half on a WIS 13 save, and avoiding having to flee
Ah, darn, I thought there was at least some wiggle room there to get it away from Ebokk. It does lose its reaction, though. Now that we're looking at it, does it seem like it has a sling stone sticking to it? Or does it seem like it just ate the stone...
For some reason I thought I had already eaten through my bardic inspirations but I have two left - can Erric have inspired the old ranger in that turn? Basically the theme song from The Neverending Story is coming at Maldorn, inappropriate naive positivity and all. He gets an extra d6 on any attack roll, saving throw, etc in the next ten minutes.
Also I forgot if Anafrey used hers in the mud room and if it's been ten minutes. But if not, she still has hers!
"I am seeing this!" Anafrey would reply with her mouth open wide. "This is definitely pirate treasure!" She would add with a smile. She would then quickly move her hair out of her face and quickly assist with taking the treasure from the chest and loading it into his pack. She would also begin loading her pack with items as well to help speed up the process. She would slide the ring on to her finger and put the daggers on her belt. She would also cram the hand crossbow into a pocket as well, not trying to be sneaky at all, just simply putting items anywhere she can to help empty out the chest. As their dwarven companion approached the other chest, she would shout out "WAIT!" before gasping and taking a step backwards when the chest came to life and attacked Ebokk. "I knew it! What did I say! Everything is out to get us on this damn Island!" She would shout as she pulled out her longbow and fired one of the few remaining arrows from her quiver. She would mumble under her breath. "don't mess up again..." As she lets an arrow fly!
Attack: 10 Damage: Unable to parse dice roll.
(OOC: Sorry, weekend was crazy. Had kids birthday party to prepare for and have at the house and then had sump pump repair issues :D)
Yes, Erric, we can add a bonus action to your turn. Maldorn, you have been inspired.
Concerning Anafrey's inspiration, she used hers in the fight with the mud bats to keep from being incapacitated. Even if she hadn't, it has been quite a bit longer than 10 minutes.
Concerning the stone, yes, you can see the stone still stuck to the front of the chest.
Concerning having a busy weekend, no problem!
Anafrey shoots an arrow at the possessed chest. It hits, but doesn't seem to have done much damage.
OOC: I really have to remember that Erric has the lucky feat, and that halflings reroll natural ones. I don't think any particular rolls have gone badly for the dopey bard, so I don't think anything's been particularly wasted, but I have to remember to use these things! I think I'm also guilty of overcorrection from the last adventure where we blew through our long rest resources way too quickly and were bone dry from an extended period of time (or at least Erric definitely was).

(OOC ewwww dead father corpse key ewwww)
Maldorn gives his end of the rope to Jambyia: “Just hang on to this until they are ready to come back up.”
He then moves toward the dwarf, asking if he needs any help but prioritizing the identification of the source of the tinkle.
"Maybe if we pour water in the lock, wait for winter, and for it to freeze, it'll bust open the lock! No, wait, it'd dry out. Hmm..."
(This is assuming Erric's not able to hear the Ebokk stuff.)
