I probably shouldn't say 'possessed'. "Sentient" is probably the correct term. While far from common, sentient weapons aren't unknown.

Based on the map, that actually makes the most sense to me. Go down 44-45-46 then come back up to 42-47? That keeps anything that might be down there coming up from behind us while doing 47+
