Unable to find Dulamul, Vishal heads to the shifter's room and knocks on the door. Hearing no answer he enters and upon not seeing the shifter there he decides to wait. A half hour later Vishal falls asleep as he waits for Dulamul.
You wake up after an indeterminate amount of time to Dulamul sitting in a chair doodling on a pad of paper. Stretching as he wakes up Vishal sleepily says, “Hey. Sorry. I didn’t mean to fall asleep.”"I figured." Dulamul glances up and smiles a bit. "But you were clearly tired." Vishal returns the small smile with one of his own, “Must have been. I was looking for you but couldn’t find you. So I thought I’d wait here for you.” "I was grabbing breakfast. Then I walked around the parts of the monastery I'm allowed to." “I must have just missed you.” Vishal replies as he sits up and asks, “What are you doodling over there?” Dulamul shrugs and flips the pad around, showing a rough sketch of an eye.
“Is drawing something you like to do?”Vishal asks curiously. "No, I kind of just thought I'd...give it a try." Smiling Vishal says, “I like it. You trying new things on your own.”Dulamul shrugs again. Continuing to smile he asks, “So why’d you pick an eye?” "It's just what popped into my mind." Vishal nods before asking, “Do you like it so far?” Dulamul frowns. "Eh. It's not going exactly how I want it to." Vishal chuckles before saying, “First attempts normally never do. I remember my first dance practice. I stepped on my teachers toes and we weren’t even dancing together.” Dulamul laughs briefly. "Impressive." A huge grin on his face Vishal says, “I know. Now look at me. I only step on peoples toes with my words and not my dancing.” "Pretty much." Dulamul grins. Vishal laughs before saying, “Anyways. I hope you keep it up. The drawing.” Dulamul shrugs. "We'll see."
Putting his hands behind his head Vishal says, “I can still hope. Also I don’t really have any plans for today. If there’s anywhere you want to go or anything you want to do let me know. Otherwise I’m content with staying here and just talking and drawing.”Dulamul shrugs. "I didn't have any plans for today either."“Then let’s just hang out here for now. You can continue to draw. And we can talk. I’m sure you still have a lot of questions.” "Okay."Dulamul nods. Vishal smiles and says, “Feel free to ask away. If you don’t have anything right now let me know. I can come up with a question.”"I don't really have anything right now," Dulamul admits. “Okay. I was curious about what you thought about the other Road members and the other refugees.” Vishal says. Dulamul shrugs. "Aleel and Bhuji didn't say a lot, Sulaan was focused on Shiazala, who was cute, and Lanan was a serious cynic. Druhdaar was kind of a jerk, Caelius and River didn't say much, Taran was a bundle of nervousness and submissiveness, and Juhaan seemed a little...off."
“Well in Caelius and River’s defense they can’t really talk.” Vishal says with a chuckle before asking, “Why do you think Lanan is a cynic?”"He's reacted to every mention of hope, religion, higher powers, et cetera with either a disdainful noise or just flat out ignoring it. Which I get, by the way-he's probably had a pretty difficult transition from Riedra." Dulamul explains. “Right. Being a soldier he probably saw a side that most people don’t. I mean....he was ordered to kill a child.” Vishal says defending him a little. "Yeah. And the Harmonious Shield is taught to worship the Inspired more than even most commoners. Almost to the level of the Taskaan Legion. To them, the Inspired and Chosen are their unquestionable masters. Losing that was probably...hard."“Yeah. Which is why I thought you’d two would get along more. Since you lost similar things.”"Yeah, except he's turned totally cynical, and I'm...willing to give religion and hope another try."Dulamul gives you a brief smile. "I'm going to go by the light chambers later."
Vishal smiles back as he says, “That’s great to hear. I will admit I’m not the biggest fan of just meditating. I prefer to show my spirituality through movement. Which thankfully we have a lot of dances that showcase our religious teachings. It makes it much easier on me.” Dulamul nods. "Well then I'm glad." Vishal shrugs as he says, “Though....if you want to I’ll join you in the light chambers. So that way there’s at least one person there you know.” Dulamul shrugs. "I don't think it would make much difference, seeing as it's individual meditation anyway." Vishal looks down and says, “Okay. I was just offering.”"I appreciate that."Dulamul gives you a quick smile. "But I think it's something I'd rather do alone." “Okay.” Vishal says with a nod not pushing it any. “Did you talked to anyone new new while exploring today?”"A couple. A very nice kalashtar named Ranari and a monk named Eriithan." Dulamul says. “Ranari is a trailblazer. That’s the term we use for a leader of the Road. They give us teams our assignments and such. I don’t know Eriithan though.” Dulamul shrugs. "They were both very nice."
“That’s nice to hear. I’m happy you’re meeting new people.” Vishal replies with a smile. "It's definitely been interesting,"Dulamul agrees. “Anything else new or exciting happen while you were wandering today?" Vishal asks. "Not really, to be honest." Dulamul replies with a shrug. “Okay let’s go to other questions then. Do you have a favorite color? Animal?” Dulamul shakes his head, laughing. "Nope."Vishal cocks his head, a smile on his face as he says, “I’m happy you’re laughing but I don’t know what’s funny.”"It's just...all this," Dulamul explains. "Favorite color, favorite animal, all of it. I'm just realizing I can have those." Vishal smiles as he says, “Yes you can. Favorite food. Least favorite. You can decide all of those now.” "Maybe not all of them now," Dulamul says, sounding amused. "After all, there's plenty still to experience."“Right. Why don’t we start with color?” Vishal suggests before saying, “My favorite color is orange. But not really bright orange more like that light orange the sky turns during sunset. It always relaxes me.”
Dulamul nods. "I...like green," he says hesitantly. “Is there any particular reason for green?” Vishal asks curiously. Dulamul shrugs. "I just...like it."Vishal smiles, “Well that’s good enough. And next time I’ll get you a green shirt then.” Dulamul laughs. "Okay, sounds like a plan." Vishal thinks about it for a minute before he asks, “Do people in Riedra have pets?” Dulamul frowns and shakes his head. "Not really, no." “Okay. I didn’t think so. It didn’t sound like a concept that would happen.” Dulamul shrugs. "They were considered frivolous and unnecessary." Vishal nods before he says, “Yeah. I figured. Is that something you’ve ever wanted before? A pet?” Dulamul shrugs. "It's another concept I never really even entertained." Vishal tries to make a joke as he says, “I’m really bad at this question thing. I keep asking stuff you’ve never considered before.” Dulamul smiles a bit. "That's...just about everything, so yeah." “Why don’t you ask me some things. Even if it seems trivial or stupid.”
Dulamul frowns. "Have you ever had a pet?"Vishal shakes his head. “No. My parents never let me get one.”"Well if you could have one, what would it be?" Vishal seems to think about it for a moment before he says, “A bunny. They’re cute and fluffy and cuddly. Plus I want something that’ll hop around and play with me while I dance.” Dulamul smiles. "Bunnies are cute." “They really are. I’ve always wanted one as a pet. Though they’re not my favorite animal.” Vishal replies. "What's your favorite animal then?" Dulamul asks. “It’s not cold enough for us to get them and I’ve read about them and seen them in drawings but the harp seal. They’re really fluffy white mammals that swim.” Dulamul smiles. "They sound adorable." Vishal smiles as he says, “They really are. I don’t know if the library here has any books with pictures of them in there though.”"If you find one, you'll have to show me." Dulamul replies. “I most definitely will. I think you’ll find them really cute.” Dulamul nods, smiling a bit.
Vishal smiles back as he says, “Anymore questions. I’m an open book and all you have to do is ask.”Dulamul shrugs. "I'm...not good at coming up with questions on the spot," he admits with a small laugh. Vishal chuckles with him before saying, “That’s okay. I can provide you with some stuff. Like....how I have an older brother and a younger sister. My favorite instrument to play is the drums. And I really like ice cream.” "What kind of ice cream?" Dulamul asks. “Really any kind. But I really like to take vanilla ice cream and put bananas, strawberries, hot fudge, and chopped nuts on it.” Dulamul smiles. "Sounds pretty good." Vishal smiles, “It is. But a lot of sugar so I don’t try and eat it too often.”"I'll keep that in mind." Dulamul says. “Maybe that’s something we can try today. Ice cream.”"Yeah, maybe,"Dulamul agrees.
After a few hours of talking, Dulamul sighs. "I should probably get going."“Right.” Vishal says knowing this time was coming. “Before you do there’s actually something serious I want to talk about.”"Yeah?" Dulamul replies. “Yeah. About yesterday. I wanted to apologize. Not for how I feel. But for unloading all of that on you when you’re already dealing with so much. And then for being upset and sulky when you didn’t return my feelings.” Dulamul frowns. "...Thanks." Vishal looks down and says, “Sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you or anything right now. I just....wanted you to know I understand. I get it. So....that why I’m going to give you time and space. So you can think about it. Decide if relationships are a thing you want. And if you even want one with me. Maybe you can test it out with someone else if I’m gone long enough. Who know. I just have the feeling I’m going to be shipped out of this place real soon. And then sent on a mission. When that mission is over I’ll come find you and we can see where you stand then. I just....wanted to apologize and let you know. In case this is the last chance I get to see you for a while.”
Dulaml is quiet for a long moment, then says more sincerely. "Thank you, Vishal."“Yeah. Of course. Anything for you.”Vishal says kind of awkwardly. Dulamul stands, blushing a bit. "Um...I should get to the light chambers." Vishal crosses his arm and says, “Yeah. Of course. Don’t want to be late. I hope you find what you’re looking for.”"Me too," Dulamul says softly. Vishal nods and wraps his arms around himself a little tighter as he exits the room after the shifter. “May the Light guide you Dulamul.”"Thank you," Dulamul says with a smile, moving down a hallway. Vishal watches him until he’s out of view before leaving to head in the opposite direction and finding an empty room to dance. After practice he eats a meal by himself before heading to bed. (Performance Dance Practice: 21)
The six of you spend the next five days exploring Shalquar, talking to people, and otherwise occupying yourselves. However, on the sixth day, five of you are summoned to a meeting room, where Ranari is waiting.
She gives you all a nod, sparing a warm smile for Taran. "The Road has been talking with the monks of Shalquar, and we've authorized a mission they've requested we undertake. Essentially, Hillcorn sends out patrols on a routine basis, looking for Shalquar. When a patrol gets too close, the monks destroy it. The Master of this monastery, Ay'Kuar, recently started sending out groups of monks to destroy patrols far away from the monastery, to throw the Riedrans off. He requested our assistance with one of these patrols. Essentially, we've gotten ahold of the pass and a four day time window when a patrol will be passing through it. We want you to ambush and kill them," she finishes bluntly.
Taran doesn't meet Trailblazer Ranari's gaze, but he does spare a quick glance to Esteemed Vishal. It would be obvious to everyone where at least part of his funds went, seeing his relatively new armor and leather bandolier. It has a few scuffs and stains from his time scavenging, but it still has a shine as Taran made sure to oil it this morning. The bandolier also has a few vials and a clay orb attached to it. In his hands, Taran is clutching a small sack of woven grasses that seems to have something in it.
Be bold, be bold, be bold
"Um... ma'am, I-I, that is, d-do we, um, do we kn-know h-how many will be in the p-patrol? A-and, are you, um, are they, the monks that is, saying we have four d-days from now or is th-the w-window.... later...?"
Taran glances amongst his companions, making sure he didn't overstep by speaking first.
Ranari nods at Taran. "We're guessing it'll be a typical size, between five and eight. The window begins the day after, so you'll probably want to leave immediately to get to the pass, it's about two hours away and I'm sure you'll want to prepare the ambush site. And Druhdaar won't be joining you on this particular mission. He'll be remaining in Shalquar for the duration of the mission. After you complete the ambush, you'll return here for debrief and your next mission."
"That honestly depends on what the mission is," Ranari explains. "Which will depend on what Adar needs at the moment. But chances are you will get at least some time in between."
"Um, T-Trailblazer," Taran notices Esteemed Vishal noticing his armor and squirms a bit, but the mission should come first, "sh-should we st-stay at the p-pass for the full f-four days, in case of, well, in c-case of a s-second patrol? A-and, c-considering it is so close, is there, um, is there a usual d-dumping site for the b-bodies, or, um, should we j-just find somewhere to hide them ourselves?"
Ranari shrugs. "I don't think there's more of a chance of a second patrol coming in the window than of them showing up at any other time. We're not actually trying to keep them away from that area, just throw their calculations for where Shalquar might be off, so you can stay to be safe or leave immediately after dealing with the patrol. As for disposing of bodies, you can do that however you want. Burning, acid, moving them out of the way. There will probably be a few crevices or ravines you can drop them into if needed. There isn't a particular spot we use for disposal."
"*Coo* Leave them... *coo* ...Make an example?" River shakes her feathers out a bit, spraying a small amount of water from her most-recent birdbath on those nearby.
Caelius, whom no one but Juhaan has seen since the debrief, raises a silent hand. He gets Taran’s attention before signing.
Caelius indicates this is to be translated then makes a swift sign for “What are the characteristics of a typical patrol?” Then more slowly “What is Druhdaar doing here?”
"The relevant equation is: Knowledge = power = energy = matter = mass; a good bookshop is just a genteel Black Hole that knows how to read." - Terry Pratchett
Taran pays close attention, focusing on Caelius' hands.
"Mister Caelius w-wants to know what a t-typical patrol looks like, the types of s-soldiers and g-general a-arms. He a-also would l-like to kn-know what M-Mister Druhdaar will be doing, while w-we are on th-this mission." Taran would glance from Ranari to Caelius and back again, "U-um, that is, i-if we are allowed t-to ask, Madam Trailblazer, ma'am."
Ranari nods. "Most soldiers sent into the mountains are fire soldiers, excelling at moving quickly and striking hard and fast. They'll likely have lighter swords and leather armor, and a leader with a greatsword and the training to move in heavier armor. I doubt there'll be any magic, but they will probably all have crossbows. They'll be well trained in how to work together, but take them by surprise and you should be able to confuse and misdirect them enough to gain the edge." She looks at Caelius. "And I'm afraid Druhdaar's activities here in the monastery while you will be gone are currently strictly need-to-know. He may be permitted to and choose to disclose it when he rejoins you."
"The relevant equation is: Knowledge = power = energy = matter = mass; a good bookshop is just a genteel Black Hole that knows how to read." - Terry Pratchett
Taran looks over at Esteemed Vishal in shock, mind racing to try and discern his intent with that question. He almost spoke, but perhaps he had a reason, a clever plan? It was the Esteemed Vishal after all.
“Well....killing scouts every time we see them seems, for a lack of better words, kind of barbaric.”Vishal responds before continuing to explain. “I’m not saying we risk killing ourselves and try to capture all of them. However, these are still breathing living people. We can try to help them like we do with the refugees. And maybe we can actually only really help one out every ten we capture. Thats still one life.”
"B-but it's too b-big a risk," Taran blurts out, "Th-they could band together a-and most of the m-monks aren't warriors. Th-they could slaughter th-the entire temple. A-and what if th-they expected us too and used that t-to locate the t-temple? Th-then the armies c-come and b-break through, and they s-seize Adar and make everyone m-mindless slaves and kill all th-the Kalashtar." Taran looks around the room, trembling like a leaf in the storm, realizing he spoke out of turn. "I-it's the only way to be safe, Esteemed Vishal, we have to kill them all."

Perception on Armor: 22
Ranari nods at Taran. "We're guessing it'll be a typical size, between five and eight. The window begins the day after, so you'll probably want to leave immediately to get to the pass, it's about two hours away and I'm sure you'll want to prepare the ambush site. And Druhdaar won't be joining you on this particular mission. He'll be remaining in Shalquar for the duration of the mission. After you complete the ambush, you'll return here for debrief and your next mission."

“Will we be immediately sent out on the next mission or will we have another period of some downtime again?” Vishal asks.

Taran Cragshollow (Summit Road)

Taran Cragshollow (Summit Road)

Caelius purses his lips and signs nothing more. He looks to the rest of the group, dreading the task in front of them.

“Do have to kill them? Can we attempt to take them alive instead if able?” Vishal asks
"For what purpose?" Ranari queries cooly.

Taran looks over at Esteemed Vishal in shock, mind racing to try and discern his intent with that question. He almost spoke, but perhaps he had a reason, a clever plan? It was the Esteemed Vishal after all.

“Well....killing scouts every time we see them seems, for a lack of better words, kind of barbaric.” Vishal responds before continuing to explain.
