The first three shifts are quiet, only the sound of the fire to be heard. Niche, on the fourth you hear something off in the distance. It sounds like an odd and ominous howling sound that carries in on the wind. If you had to take a guess it would be at minimum 1000 feet out from the camp, in the direction of the forest. Is there anything you wish to do once you hear this?
Everyone else is asleep at this point.
(I believe in random fairness, If Niche had a low roll, it would be an indiscriminate (distance and direction))
Occasionally feeding a branch into the fire and scanning the area, Niche expected her watch to be as uneventful as what Kal on the previous watch had described to her, but her attitude was soon changed when a distant howl drifted into her ears. Now on high alert, Niche strained her ears and tries to listen for the sound again, unsure if she heard it right.
If she hears the sounds again she will try to discern if it is getting closer, she will also get up from her spot and swiftly pack all her belongings up, just in case they need to make a run for it. If the sound is just off to the distance and stays distant, she will just stay vigilant and hold one of the larger flaming sticks in her hand, shuffling a bit further away from the forest. However if it gets any closer she will go and wake up Varax since he would be the next watch. “Hey hey, I know it’s not technically your shift yet but do you hear what I hear? Should I wake the others?”
The sound resonates a bit later one more time, and it is somewhat closer sounding. It is hard to tell for sure exactly how close it is, but at your best guess it moved about 200 feet closer from the last time. This happens as you wake Varax for his shift, so he in turn hears it.
Varax make a history or an insight check with advantage.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Varax jerks up suddenly, brandishing a curved dagger he hid under his pillow. His eyes are wide and full of urgency and hate for a moment, but they soften as he realizes who it is "Niche, what are you-" He pauses as he does indeed hear something.
“Hey woah woah don’t stab me!” Niche immediately jumps back when the dagger was drawn towards her and spoke in an angry whisper, “I hear wolves in the forest, and the sound is getting closer.” She scuttles back towards the bonfire and withdraws one of the larger branches from the firewood pile to light it and hold it out towards the forest.
He sighs and stows the dagger. Varax stands and grabs his sword instead "Please accept my apologies, Niche." He looks to his armor neatly folded and stacked up. No time to put it on if he wants to be ready...oh well. He's been through worse. With his sword ready, he takes a few steps forward as Niche advances with a torch.
With the additional light spread around the camp, you no longer hear any more howls through the remainder the night. As dawn approaches, Natalia comes out of her tent with the snake from the day before (already out of the sack). It is half coiled around her arm as she moves over to the wagons wheel and shakes it free. She greets Varax with a Good Morning as she moves its head with one hand and a firm grip, she draws her dagger and brings it down straight through it's neck, severing the head. She maintains the firm grip on the head and then tosses it into the woods. She then removes the skin from the snake and returns to her tent. She returns having retrieved a small pan. She cuts the snake into small thin slices and moves to the fire and begins to fry them for everyone to have as a part of breakfast. Added a few torches around the camp I see. She says to Varax raising an eyebrow.
"Good morning, Ms Natalia" he says and watches with grim curiosity as Natalia casually dispatches the snake. His eyes track the head as it goes sailing into the woods beyond. "Indeed. More torches. Niche caught wind of wolves closing in. Fire tends to keep most beasts at bay."
I see. Natalia says, the aroma of the frying snake fills the pre-dawn air, the birds around in the forest begin to stir as do the bugs, you can hear the forest come to life. Do you want to wake the others? Breakfast will be ready soon and we should probably break camp soon so we can make good time with the possibility of the mud the travelers mentioned.

I was going to say it was a lone wolf, but Niche said it was wolves lol.
Varax History Check:
You do recall that they are forest wolves that are smaller than the artic cousins and of course dire wolves. They hunt in packs, and they use the howls as communication as to their location. They tend to flank when they attack, so fighting them alone or a small group is ill-advised. They have a ranking system so it is possible that there is a lone wolf out there and in this case that is what it seems. (But there is only one way to be sure)
Branagh rubs the sleep from his eyes and wanders around the camp shrugging off the last of last nights sleep. Wolves you say? Never a problem of those on a good ship. This is why I prefer the sea to the woods. I say we get a wiggle on today and try to get as far away from this pack as possible.
He nods "Well, if the lovely aroma of your expert snake frying doesn't wake them, then this surely will!" With that, he uses the magic of his Minor Illusion spell to make the sound of bagpipes!
What an...interesting sound. Natalia replies to Varax's musical choice (it is not a normal sound (or instrument) heard by her before) as she passes out the food and sets a bit aside for Niche and makes herself a plate.
