"Ah, we usually make it a bit further in a day on account of an earlier start, but apparently Mr. Gundren insisted... Ground is pretty solid up ahead west of the road though. We should be able to head to some trees out that way." About ten minutes later Finnan leads his oxen around a gentle bend in the road and down a hill and then pulls the wagon off and across a patch of open land with mostly just scrub brush and not too many depressions. The silhouette of a stand of tall pines looming above comes into view only seconds before the halflings pull their wagons onto a gentle carpet of pine needles and stop. "I think this'll have to do, boss."
As the halflings hop of the wagons, Zeke approaches Finnan,'You were saying something about Mr. Gundrun insisting something about your start time? What exactly did Mr. Gundrun insist upon?'
"Beats me boss, I just work here. They said your Mr. Gundren paid extra to rush the whole thing." He shrugs. "Never met the guy myself. Normally we'd just leave the next morning. Should work out fine." Farnin chimes in. "We don't wanna be half way to Phandalin on the Triboar Trail come nightfall anyhow. You hear stories these days, and all. The girls should be good and fresh come day after tomorrow to give it a good push to town. Gettin' a half day's head start might work out for the better." The twins start tending to the oxen while talking to Zeke.
"I don't write anything down. Got everything I need to know right up here" remarks Finnan, tapping his temple.
"Maybe that's why you'll be drivin' those two sorry cows in the mud and the rain back and forth 'tween here and Leilon 'til the sweet kiss of death finally relieves you of your duty, Farnin. These people looks like they've been a few places, and have a few left to see." "Least those ridin' safely with me, that is" concludes Farnin.

'I'm going to go check our backtrail and make a quick sweep of the environs - shouldn't be gone more than an hour and then I can take first watch for the night when I return.'
With that, Zeke strides off into the gloom and rain, making his way back to the point where the caravan left the road, being careful to move as quietly as possible and drinking in his surroundings. The gloom and the rain seem to swallow him up - letting even his monstrous form seem to disappear into the mist.

Tarja takes the back, like Zeke suggested. She is happy with the mud and rain, and makes no effort to cover herself with a tarp. Upon finding the clearing/campsite, she wild shape transforms into a wolf and and takes some time to sniff around, to see if they’re intruding on some animals territory or if there are any nearby, and just to take in the fresh rainy air and pine needles. Zeke probably has all the military threats covered, but nature is up to me. (Perception: 23)
(Ooc: there’s more to say and do but I’ll see what to the wild shape hour brings first)
Tarja immediately sniffs out a snake hole, plenty of squirrel activity and a slightly out of place collection of previously dried materials that she quickly realizes has fallen from a bird's nest high above. With the sound of the pounding rain diminished under the tree canopy the group might be startled when she then sniffs out a pair of raccoons that chitter aggressively and dash up a tree about fifteen feet before stopping to hiss at the newly transformed wolf.
After reaching the road and observing for a few minutes a slight breeze from the east carries a pungent, foul stench, such as one of garbage or dirty, wet farm animals.
Ethantakes cover with Faeand Elraas the rain begins to fall,
"This is nice, I like rain."
Ethanseems to enjoy the trip, working on some of his devices, until the caravan decides to camp for the night.
As Tarjatransforms into a wolf, Ethan's eyes go wide with fascination.
"Oh wow that really is amazing!"
As Tarjaand Zekehead out to scout the surroundings, Ethanraises his gauntlet and start fiddling with some components near the glove end.
Ethanholds his fingers against the component he was fiddling with, and you see a slow pulsing light, as magic flows into the gauntlet.
After 10 minutes has passed Ethanreleases the component,
"Right that should be charged up now. Now to set up the perimeter alarm."
Ethanholds his hand out, palm up and presses another component on the gauntlet.
Magical energy flows out of the main body of the gauntlet and into the glove, flowing along inlaid channels woven into the leather and fabric.
As the magic reaches the finger tips, the small embedded cut-stones begin to glow, and small beams of magical light shoot out.
The beams converge on a spot just above the open hand and a foot long metallic tent peg forms.
The tent peg seems to glow with a silvery moon-like glow.
Ethanreaches out and takes the peg, and as he moves it away from the open glow, a new tent peg forms, with a silvery thread connecting it to the first peg.
Ethanthen proceeds to trace out an area with the pegs, a new peg always forming as the last one is grabbed.
Once the right size area is outlined, Ethanbreaks the last thread, causing the embedded pegs to flare with light before fading out completely, leaving no visible trace of them.
"Well that's the first side done. With this large a group, and the two large carts, I'm going to have to surround us. I think 6 areas should suffice."
Ethanthen repeats what he did before, charging up his gauntlet and then laying out the pegs, until the small camp sight is surrounded by a hexagonal perimeter.
Ethancast Alarm 6 times, as a ritual, surrounding the camp sight with slightly overlapping 20ft squares in a roughly hexagonal pattern. They will last for 8 hours each, and will make the sound of a hand-bell ringing if anyone not in the current group tries to enter the areas. It takes a hour and some, to layout the 6 areas.
After reaching the road and observing for a few minutes a slight breeze from the east carries a pungent, foul stench, such as one of garbage or dirty, wet farm animals.
OOC: I'm assuming this is Zeke at the road
Zeke smells the horrid stench as he closes in on the road and quickly looks up and down the road for the source. Not seeing anything in the gloom and the rain, he immediately turns and heads back to the camp.
'Something on the road, couldn't see in it in the dark - but it smelled horrible. Ethan do you have that Alarm spell up? I think we've got trouble inbound'
With that, Zeke draws his blade and settles his shield in a series of gestures the group has already become accustomed to and walks 60 feet back away from the camp towards the road and stands in the rain waiting for whatever comes their way.
Elra watches Ethan as he sets up his Alarms and jots down notes about it. "Alright then," she says as he finishes, "I never got my answer about how your gauntlet works, so spill the beans. And I'll answer whatever questions you might have for me."
"Oh, well, uh, you see, the gauntlet kind of houses all my gadgets, or stores them anyway."
"The 2 big integrated systems are the compressed storage and the magic matter condenser."
"I have some ideas for more integrations, but I am going to need some more materials and some of what I want, I still cant make work yet, but I think I'm close."
"The compressed storage is here,"
Ethantaps the release for the double hatch, causing it to open, with a spark of magic.
"So there is a distortion funnel that expands out when I open the hatch. It allows me to get objects a little large, through the smaller entrance."
"I can probable get items about...2 feet wide at the most, into the little less then 1 foot entrance. As the items enter the field, they start to distort getting smaller as they are pushed deeper into the compressed space."
"The compressed space can hold quite a bit, but doesn't translate that weight to the gauntlet. It's very convenient for carrying around all my materials, tools and the like."
Ethancloses the hatch with another flare of magical energy.
"This is the magic matter condenser. It is programmable, so it can be used to produce different designs, with different magical infusions."
Ethanindicated the glove part of the gauntlet.
"The programmed control units are housed in the compressed space and connect out to the gauntlet here,"
Ethanpoints to the components he was fiddling with earlier. The component looks like a series of cut-stones arranged around a rotating selector.
"I can rotate this and select the programmed unit to connect, and them dump the magic into it."
"The perimeter alarm unit is able to be charged with "cantrip" level magic over about 10 minutes, so I can use it over and over without using up my daily magic reserves."
"I can use my daily reserves if I want to use it immediately as well, but I like to keep them available for emergencies if I can."
"So the stones and systems inlaid in the glove follow the programmed modules instructions and both, form the magic matter and infuse it was magical systems of it own, if needed."
"The magical matter and infusions are held together by magic, lasting for different times depending on the design. Then they dissipate, coming undone and dissolving back into the magic that created them."
"I have a very special design I am working on, that is almost complete, that could very well be my lasting legacy and contribution to the field of artifice, but its not complete yet."
Elra sits there in fascinated silence the whole time Ethan is talking, occasionally taking notes. "Wow, that's really cool. You're able to do all that stuff without any kind of divine intervention. I wonder how the Weave interacts with the type of magic you preform? It seems to take more time, seeing as you have to build the conduit through which you preform your magic, but still it is magic at it's core. Investigating the reactions to the Weave would be interesting. You're view of magic is also rather interesting. You see it as a type of energy, which is true. It's also a lot more than that when you study it for long enough. Loremaster Atlavast used to say that depending on where your magic came from is how magic appears to you. Perhaps this is how artificers see it." She trails off and looks down at her amulet and the symbol on her book like she's lost in thought.
Fae just sat silently as usual, observing the others as they went about so naturally. Unbeknownst to her, she had a smile on her face. She was enjoying the company. And she too enjoyed the rain. Funny how a bunch of rain isn’t even dampening their spirits. She’d pop her hood up for its real function, to keep from the rain, and actually not to hide, before hopping down from her perch in the cart. Fae would grab a handful of pebbles, bring them close to her mouth and whisper, “Light”. A gentle light will glow from the stones and one by one, she’d hand them out as little personal night lights. She’d offer one to the drivers, Arvel, Elra and Ethan. “You can cover or pocket them if you no longer desire its light.” She’d leave one in a spot on the cart for Tarja when she returns from her wolf ventures. Finally, the last one for Zeke.
She heads out down the path to Zeke with the light stone pocketed. “Sorry to interrupt your watch Zeke, but I have something I’d like to give you in case it may come in handy. Of course you can keep it covered if it’s no longer desired.” Fae would reach into her pocket to grab the pebble and hold it out towards him, still covered.
Elra takes the stone and looks at it excitedly, "Wow! The one time I tried to do something like that it accidentally flared out and hurt a couple of people. I felt so bad about it afterwords that I didn't try to practice with any of the power Oghma gifted me with for about a week until Atlavast explained to me that it was an accident and no one was mad with me."
The campsite seems uneventful and peaceful - squirrels and raccoons are where they should be, and the party lit with magic lights. For the time being, Tarja trots over to Zeke on the road, and sits down by the side of the road.
If anything is coming, she's likely to see it better with darkvision. Can Zeke even see at night? A smell on the wind isn't too worrying though, whatever it is may still be far away.
(OOC: I suppose if there are relevant checks, it's 18 for perception and 6 for Nature to see if the smell is familiar to me in some way. I'm not doing an indepth investigation though, just moving over to Zeke.)
It's comforting to see everyone working together. Harmonious. Zeke standing guard, Fae providing light, Ethan casing wards and and Elra discussing magic.
Ethanindicated a small cut stone attached to his armour. It is attached with a little cylinder around it.
Ethangrabs the cylinder and twists it, causing the stone within to begin glowing with light, illuminating the area in front of him.
"Thank you very much though, it is very kind. So your a magic caster as well? This is great, we will have to sit down and see that we can learn from each other as well."
Ethanturns back to Elra, as Faeheads off to hand out more of the light stones.
"Uh, umm what were we taking about again...oh right magic!"
"So artificers use magic much as wizards seem to, only we pre-infuse items to hold the patters that wizards seem to be able to do from within themselves."
"So as far as I can see, there are multiple sources of magical energy out there, Arcane, Divine, etc, but most people seems to have access to it in similar ways."

"Then when he later showed me how he cast spells, he again used that cantrip magic to bring forth the stored pattern. Once it had formed, he release some of his daily reserves into the pattern giving form to the spell proper."
"The daily reserves are far more powerful then the cantrip magic, but are much harder to control."
"The daily reserves seem to group and subdivide as the magic user practices their art. I myself have had one subdivision of my daily resources, giving my two allotments to use to power the infusions that can't run on cantrip magic alone."
