As Daner wrestles with the lever to prevent Slithotep from operating it, The Yaun-ti lashes out at the dwarf with his tail. Daner doges aside at the last moment to avoid the scales wrapping around his leg. Hoping that the ice will hold the lever a little longer, Daner frees his hands, grabbing his Greataxe, and makes a heavy overhand swing at Slithotep.
Slithotep snarls as chains from one of the prisoners smashes him in the eye. He flinches away, and is caught off guard as Daner's axe slices towards him. To late he tries to dodge, but the blade buries itself deep into his flesh. Cold reptilian blood starts poring from the wound. He desperately grabs at the lever, trying to pull it down but his strength is visibly draining from him. His hand slips from the lever and for a moment he tries to prop himself up, but then slips, falling backwards. His evil eyes glare at Daner as he hits the ground, loosing nothing in their malice as his life begins to slip away. He chokes struggling to stay alive, but the wound is too deep and his movements become weaker.
Slithotep lies dying at your feet Daner, barely holding on, and there is a sudden silence in the room. One of the prisoners has the presence of mind to start putting out the fires, beating it with a sheet they found. Ellis to, though, is badly wounded - in peril of his life again on this difficult day.
Darion moves forward, sadly checking on Gorvax's body. In his heart of hearts he had believed perhaps they could all escape, but that was not to be. "Quick, Ellis looks if he may be alive, can you heal him Tempest?" he asks.
With DM hat on
Slithotep has fallen - as he is a powerful character I will give him death saves so you have a - short - amount of time to decide what you want to do with him. You all of course can now clearly see the lever you presume opens a door to call for reinforcements.
As Player / Darion
That was tense, poor Ellis that wasn't a good fight for him! But we won! Yeah! Now we just have to escape - all of this on day 1 of the campaign!
Tempest will look over to Ellis and say "Awaken friend" casting Healing Word healing Ellis: 6. Then turning to the group say, "Cut off his head and wrap it in a sack or cloth so we can deliver it to Fenthaza then let us leave this cursed place."
The unconscious Ellis suddenly opens his eyes, panting as he felt a little better. He stood up, hearing Tempest and was surprised as he then looked over to see Slitotep dying. He was very glad, only to see that Gorvax was now dead too. He felt so angry, thinking that if only he hadn't gotten so scared, they could have kept Gorvax from dying. They were supposed to save everyone and escape. Ellis prays for Gorvax before looking around the room, finding any cloth or sacks not burned that would be big enough to wrap Slihtotep's head with. "Thank you. I'm sorry that I could not really help thanks to that strange fear. If it weren't for that, maybe we could have kept Gorvax from being killed." he had said back to Tempest and everyone, sighing.
Tempest will look over to Ellis and say "Awaken friend" casting Healing Word healing Ellis: 6. Then turning to the group say, "Cut off his head and wrap it in a sack or cloth so we can deliver it to Fenthaza then let us leave this cursed place."
The adrenalin rushing through his body urges Daner forward. Tempest's words are enough to trigger him. Before him on the ground is the creature who held dozens, if not hundreds, of innocents as slaves, spending their lives on a whim. Bathing in their blood. Before him lay a master who was cruel and unrelenting. Who allowed fear and strength to be his guiding principles. The world would be better without such as him.
Daner's draws his axe back, swinging heavily, and brings it down on Slithotep's neck.
"We are not weak." He simply says at he looks at the corpse before him.
Greataxe - Attack: 23 Damage: 9 ((Not a critical hit so only one death save failure here))
Daner's axe hits true and, with a lock of shock and surprise on it, Slithotep's head comes clean off in one blow. It rolls a few feet and comes to a rest at Ellis's feet.
@Sixfoot10 for future reference, all attacks against unconscious creatures have advantage, and any attack made within 5ft is an auto crit! Rather than making you hack away, thought more dramatic just to finish it. To save online faff, I rolled a d20 at home to see if he would have critically succeeded on his death save (he didn't, rolled a 15) so no chance he would have one last round!
Slithotep’s lair contains treasures from distant lands. The collection includes a Sembian wine flask (50 gp), a bejeweled Amnian doublet with matching money pouch (75 gp), a fine Cormyrean cloak (100 gp), a gilded Moonshae harp (250 gp), and three large cushions covered in Turami silk (25 gp each). Hidden under one of the cushions is a red, Thayan spellbook.
Upon closer inspection, Tempest notices a seam along the wall in another location that looks just like the seam in the wall before the lever that Slithotep was trying to pull. A little more looking around, though it is all so difficult to find in the smoke, he also finds a small button inside of the mouth of a small bronze-wrought snake figurine that stands nearby.
Ellis squeaks a little at Slithotep's head now being at his feet. But at least now he is completely dead, quickly wrapping some cloth around the head before having looked around. He was amazed by all of the beautiful treasures, especially the harp. But he knows that the money earned from selling these would be more useful to them all once they get out of here. Ellis really wanted to get back home to check up on his mom and everyone else in the village, worried for them.
Darion sadly gets up from examining the Firenewt, and comes over and gives Ellis a pat on the shoulder. As he glances around he is tempted by the various treasures - but of course forgets them all when he catches sight of the spellbook.
"If you don't mind!" he says to the others, picking it up and swiftly transferring it to ones of his large inner pockets. He'll wait and see what the others want to get for a moment, then say very nervously "We are all getting exhausted - I can barely think and we still have to get out of here. It feels we are in even deeper than we were before. Are we going to risk the room beyond, or should we teleport somewhere? I'd rather not see Fenthasa again, as she'll almost certainly just try to kill us and claim she put down the slave revolt. I could send the head through the teleport if people wanted?"
"If we want to leave, I'm fine with leaving the head here. Teleporting it could alert any others and put the entire place in a state of chaos. There's a button here with a similar lever. I'd rather leave it alone and head straight to the cave but I'm fine with whatever the group wants." Tempest adds as he uses his last spell slot to cast Goodberry. He'll hand two to each of his companions and say, "Place this in the mouth of anyone who falls, but do it quickly. It will restore them but just barely." then pocket the remaining 4.
"If you don't mind, I could use a rest before we move on."Daner slumps to the floor as the adrenalin leaves his body. He eats one of the goodberry's and pockets the other one. "Hopefully the fear of Slithotep will keep people away from this chamber for a while and we can take some time to recoup and plan our next steps."
Daner considers the items that the others had found. While beautiful and valuable, some of them were just impractical to take with them. If he took a moment, he could probably cut one of the seams on the cushions and removing the filling to keep the silk. The material on its own would still be worth a nice amount of gold. The harp though; there was no way they could carry that out and still be concerned about the guards and Fenthasa. "I think we are going to have to leave some of this behind unless we get the others to carry it while we take care of protecting them."
Slithotep’s sword catches your eye. The weapon is of impeccable craft. It’s creation would be beyond the capability of the yuan-ti. Slithotep likely had it crafted for himself by imprisoned dwarven smiths or some such.
Tyrant’s Greatsword: 2d6, add an additional 2d6 damage when the wielder scores a critical hit with this weapon. When a critical hit is made, the weapon’s damage counts as magic damage for the purpose of overcoming resistances for that attack only.
Darion will look at the other prisoners, checking on them especially Tahvo. "Waiting is dangerous, but then pushing on in our current state would be risky too" he gestures at the other prisoners "some of these could barely stand as is. Let us take a rest."
If we take a short rest, Darion will use the time to cast Detect Magic and generally investigate the room with it. When that is done he will see if the magic book has any enchantments that could ward it. If not, he will start having a look through and see what goodies lie within.
If needed: Investigation or Arcana check (both same bonus): 18
((When you say the sword adds an extra 2D6 damage when crits, is this on top of the normal crit damage? This would make it 2d6 for normal damage and 6d6 for crit damage?))
Daner takes some time to rest. Tending to his wounds and recovering\. As he does so he takes some time to admire Slithotep's sword. "Does anyone mind if I hang on to this? It may come in handy as we get out of here."
