text map: Most of the party is in the second hall. Gniff and Gimble are still in the main hall trying to reconfigure the trap. Casmir and Misty are on the left side of the room near the curtains separating the second hall from another room. Stannic is in the center in the room facing the monster that dropped down. The creature has opened up its tentacles showing its beak for a mouth. It appears to be ready to fight Stannic. The monster is also in the center of the room, but closer to the far side, where as Stannic is closer to the entrance. Misty is behind Casmir, making her closer to the monster than Casmir, but neither is in melee range. To Misty's right is an unlit brazier. Very little light is pouring into the room. Most of the light is coming from the open door, the way the party entered the second hall, and from a destroyed wall, the pile of rubble not covering up the light from outside the castle all the way.
Stannic alerted the party to the monster's presence, but Stannic is the only one facing the creature. (OOC: Shield of Faith is still active on Stannic. Armor of Agathys is still active on Misty. Feel free to remind me of any other spell effects that would still be active.)

Gniff hurries into the room to assist his teammates. Gniff then tries to figure out what the creature is. You cannot make heads or tails of it. You do not know what this creature is, and you do not even know if it occurs naturally or not. (OOC: you did not make the DC. Anyone can try a Nature, Arcana or Intelligence check on their turn to try to identify what the monster is.) Gniff certain that he does not know what it is, he fires his shortbow at the monster. The attack hits. (OOC: dealing 8 damage)

Casmir moves close to Stannic to attack the creature, swinging his hammer (OOC: Attack 11 Damage if it hits 10). He stays there and will use his reaction to protect whoever is attacked first by the monster next time.
