Anakis wreathes her hand in flame ( Fire Bolt ) to light the candle. "Oh yeah," Anakis giggles as she realises that no one else is seeing that far down the hall, "Let's have a look if the old lady left anything for us." And she creeps forwards (Stealth: 18 & Perception: 4).
“Thank you!” Aluzira says with a smile holding out her newly lit candle and follows Anakis. She looks around for anything of interest or anything that might be connected to Hud.
(OOC - Nicolas was standing right by Anakis and Aluzira and currently has Light cast on his torch. More light doesn't hurt, though.)
Nicolas will begin slowly making his way down the hall toward where Anotte had been, keeping a close watch on the walls for any markings and on the floors for any buttons or wires that might trigger a trap. (Investigation: 6)
As you make your way into the passage in single file, first Anakis, then Aluzira, then Nicolas, then Remacle and the rest of the halflings, Torrent, and anyone else who wants to follow along, you can see up ahead that the transparent form of Annote floats aside into the first hallway on the left.
As you cross under the small archway, Aluzira, which is carved with many delicate details, you can see at the base of the arch is a carved inscription reading: I, Hud, made this archway, my masterwork, and I dedicate it to Annote, my love.
As you all come up to the opening on the left, your torchlight illuminates the gauzy image of Annote in her painter's frock, a little ways up the side passage which comes to a dead end just behind her. She seems to be concentrating only on jingling her bracelet in a meditative trance. When the halflings come into her view, however, her image and the jingling seem suddenly present, and she speaks to you. "Seeing the little ones among you," she says, gesturing to the halflings, "reminds me of something I had forgotten. Recently I think it was, there were some small people that came into this place of the throne between the two archways that I protect, perhaps hunting for treasure as you say you are.
"They were not like you," she says to the halflings, "but they were of the same stature. They did not seem to love beautiful things, so I watched them carefully, and since they attempted to harm neither Hud's work nor my own, I let them pass. Where they are now I cannot say, but others have been here, yes." Her image fades once again as she returns to her trance.
There is another opening on the left about thirty feet ahead. You can see, Nicolas, that the walls and ceiling around the opening are blackened with soot. Beyond that, the hall continues forward to the limit of Anakis's vision.
“No miss,” says Remacle in response to Anakis, “I have no idea who she’s talking about. It seems we might have some competition. Be on the lookout, fellas.”
Annote looks up from her jingling as she considers Ash’s question. After a moment in which she seems to think back on her experience of the various peoples of the world, she looks at Ash and shakes her head.
Aluzira smiles seeing the inscription and listens closely to the conversation as she looks around. “I would’ve guessed Dwarves next but I’m fairly certain they admire good craftsmanship, especially carved stone such as the throne and archways. Could it be Goblins?” she asks curiously.
Anakis taps her chin with her finger as she thinks for a short moment over Remacle's response. "Hmm, well I'll keep an eye out for other halflings then." She looks further down the hall, then creeps down to the next opening thirty feet down on the left and peeks around the corner (Perception: 18).
As you approach the next hallway on the left, Anakis, you can see that the passage straight ahead continues on indefinitely and that, at the limit of your vision, there is a door on the left.
Black soot coats the walls on either side of the opening and extends out onto the ceiling of the passage. As you peek around the corner, you can see that the entire ten foot wide hallway, which runs at a forty-five degree angle to the left, is similarly coated in thick, black soot. About thirty feet along its length, you can see a hole in the floor a few feet across, and after another thirty feet, the hallway ends in an ascending flight of stairs.
"There was some kind of fire here," Anakis whispers back to the others, "It was big. And there's stairs up down here," she points down the off-shooting tunnel, then nods down the long hall way, "Or a door down that way but the tunnel looks like it goes on forever."
“Which way do you think we should go?” Aluzira asks the others after moving to where Anakis is. “I wonder what caused the fire, especially down here. It doesn’t seem like it would be natural.”
Anakis wreathes her hand in flames, as if to cast fire bolt, then looks at her flaming hand and then the soot covered hallway. "It must have been a big fireball to burn the hall like that," she says as she looks back at Aluzira and drops the flames. "I don't feel good about going down a burnt out hallway. We can go past it and keep going down this way, or should we go back to the room with the big stone chair?"
“hmm, I’m not sure.” Aluzira says pondering what to do. “Perhaps we should go back to the stone chair then. I don’t know what would cause a fireball that big but it must be pretty powerful if you can’t mimic that amount of fire and I don’t know if we’d be ready for that.”
As you look down the soot covered hallway, Anakis, you notice that the soot is the thickest on the walls and ceiling immediately nearby the hole in the floor, which is only a couple feet across.
Anakis looks curiously at the hole in the floor and the increased soot around this spot. She scratches her head as she mulls over what to do, but as curiosity gets the better of her, she slinks away from Aluzira and the others, and creeps over as quietly as she can (Stealth: 8). Once at the hole, she lays on the ground, getting covered in soot, and peeks over the lip of the hole as she tries to see what is down there and what might have made all the soot (Perception: 20).
As you approach the hole, you can see that the stairway ahead in the darkness seems to be blocked with fallen stones after climbing for about twenty feet, so that if it at one time lead to the surface, it now looks to be impassable.
You can see that the hole, which is against the wall on one side of the passage, goes straight down into the darkness about fifty feet before opening into a larger space with a stone floor about ten feet below that. Thick soot coats the hole along its entire length and the smell of smoke and fire is strong. Directly below the bottom of the hole, there are piles of ash and what look like the remains of a hearth. The hole appears to serve as a chimney when the hearth is active. It looks wide enough and to have enough handholds so as to be scalable by squeezing all the way to the bottom..
Anakis creeps back to the others, "I couldn't help it. I took a peek down the hole. There's nothing down there, just what looks like an old fire pit. We can probably climb down if you want? The stairs up look like they're blocked off. Maybe they went to the city above? What if they open up into someone's basement or a shop?! That'd be really cool..." Anakis trails off into excited chatter about the possibilities.

Anakis listens intently to Anotte then turns to Remacle when she finishes. "Did you have any other friends coming here to explore, Mr. Buttons?"
