The inside of the cave is completely dark, no light sources can be seen. After walking along the ledge, the party comes to the stairs, and even from here, the stench of dirty dogs can be smelled, along with rotting meat.
(Assuming they go up the stairs.)
At the top of the stairs, the smells intensify into an almost unbearable stench. Four large canines are chained to the wall here, snarling and gnashing their teeth. Far bigger than dogs, these animals are nothing short of wolves.

Alaric pauses, and looks into the room for signs of any other living creature; he is concerned that they may have a handler of some kind. He waits for Flint, then if it's just dogs, he continues to move stealthily up the main corridor to keep a lookout, in case Goblins come to check on the dogs.
Eraminus waits near the base of the stairs, his torch cutting through the darkness. He smells the air, the damp and musty smell filling his nose. He glanced around, hearing the snarling of the wolf-hounds.
Alvara follows up the stairs, raising a hand to cover her nose at the stench.
"They don't seem too friendly..." She mutters quietly at the gnashing wolves. Having seen the animals, she reconsiders their original plan to turn them loose. She wracks her brain, considering everything she has read about wolves to make her best prediction of whether they would run out or simply turn and attack them if unchained.

Wanting to check in on Archimedes, Alvara sends the rat a telepathic note.

Alvara's message to Archie: You still doing okay there, Archie? We are inside the cave now, dealing with the dogs, or rather wolves as it turns out. Where are you? Any goblins around?
((Archimedes has been carefully making his way along the river, not sure where he is at right now but I will roll perception for him to observe the surroundings.
Eraminus looks towards the top of the stairs as they snarl, "Everything okay up there?" He shifts his weight slightly, gravel cracking beneath his boot.
Flint makes his way to the top of the stairs. He tosses each hound a morsel of meat from the pot in the hopes of calming them. He looks carefully around the room, looking for what else is inside and how the hounds chains are attached to the wall.
The wolves chew the meat greedily, devouring every bit. After eating, the wolves stop growling, and somewhat calm down.
Flint:
As far as you can tell nothing else of importance is in this room. The wolves are chained to the wall with a metal rod, preventing them from breaking free.

As Flint tosses another small piece of venison to each dog he says in a calm, caring tone, “Who’s a good mutt…ye be…ye be.” Turning to Alvara Flint asks, “What do you think, leave them here or let ‘em go?”
Eraminus walks up the stairs part way, "I'd say free them, especially if they seem calm enough. They, like the goblins haven't chosen this life but have been pressed into it."
Alvara shakes her head, "I'd say pacifying them with some tasty bites and buying us some time is the best... They've definitely got a mean streak based on their body language... They'll bite us for sure if we unchain them."
With a deeply wrinkled brow, Flint ponders Eraminus' and Alvara’s words. He says “Well, we don’t have to decide their fate now." Looking at the chains, he adds, "They seem well-secured. Maybe leave them be, now that they are calmed, and make our way deeper into the cave.” Flint flings one last morsel to each dog and starts to make his way back down the stairs. He stops half way down to set the pot on a step and grab his warhammer.
Archimedes sends a telepathic response to Alvara, relaying that he still hadn't seen goblins nearby but kept picking up their scent. He also noted the water in the river and how it seemed to be pressing against the edge of its boundaries.
Archimedes continues along the ledge, keeping to the side the furthest possible away from the water.
Alvara's expression softened for a moment at Flint and Eraminus' sympathy towards the canines. She nodded, "We can see if they calm down a bit by the time we are heading out."
Receiving the telepathic response from the rat, Alvara shares the information with the group. "Archie still hasn't seen any goblins yet but keeps smelling them. I think he's almost at the point on Barek's map where he's coming up on that big room in the northeast corner...." She looks to the eastern wall of the room they are in with the wolves, trying to determine if they could continue east to the next room marked on the map or if they had to follow the long path along the river that Archimedes had walked.

He stands there in silence for a moment, looking at the aolves. He was torn between helping them or following the party, "I suppose you're right. Maybe they'll bed down and sleep in a bit."
Eraminus glances around, "I believe that we have to go back the way we came and head north. Unless Barek omitted a passageway in this room." He finished climbing the stairs and scanned the walls, looking for any potential passage ways.
Eraminus walks over to the chimney, glancing up it, listening for goblins or noise. He looks as well to see how big around it is and if he might be able to climb up it.
Eraminus ducks his head back and motions for the rest of the party to come over, "Found this going up, sounds like there are goblins up there, one with a real deep voice."

Following Eraminus’ lead, Flint walks back up the stairs and gives the dogs some reassuring words as he comes to stand next to Eraminus. Flint listens closely for voices.
