After 200 feet, the party comes into a rubble filled chamber, with several side tunnels leading down, and at least one more leading upwards. It seems the rocks from the tunnel collapsing above it have filled this one, and covered up any odds of chasing the "control stone" more directly.
And the rest of the party can hear the subtle slithers and the click of talons on stone. It seems that they are coming too.

Though he felt solid ground beneath his feet again, Kalgren did not feel at ease. On edge, he held his pact keeper rod in front of him in a protective hold, moved into position (J3) and kept a close eye on the nearest passage.
Two, fully matured and well armored creatures slither up from the "southern" entrance, hissing and clicking as they tap their talons on the ground... While a more slug-like one with quills, seen previously, emerges from the "northern" entrance... And as the quill one enters view, the well armored soldiers down below squirm and spasm, and quills erupt from their backs, while the quilled one does not gain the armor of the soldiers. How interesting.
Oriander raises his club and grins. "...Come at me, monsters." He growls, apparently eager to show these things that they'll need some help if they keep coming down.

Kalgren peaked out from behind Oriander's shoulder. From where he was standing he could see two creatures slither into the cavern like some mockery of guards patrolling a gate. The last time he had been in a situation like this it did not turn out so well for him. So he took a page out of the paladin's playbook and decided to bring the wrath of god down upon them.
A ball of yellow and orange formed in his hand which he lobbed at the first creature he could see.

The first creature hit, being CR2, is blasted with the Guiding Bolt. Even being behind half cover wasn't enough to spare it from the attack as it becomes illuminated, providing an advantage to whoever next tries to hit the monstrosity.
CR1, however, slithers its way up and through some of the stones to set up some level of cover for itself, before the quills bristle and are fired at Vigil!
(Vigil, you have a +2 to your AC due to half-cover, which I am already accounting for in the dice roll.)
