As to ship around the abandoned garage, the ooze in the moon pool on the west side of the garage begins to rise above the edge of the pool, the ooze slowly creeps out of the pool, a mechanical figure visible within, somewhat reminiscent of the vehicle some of you are working on.
It's Ctenmiir, crawling his way from the ooze, which now seems to ignore his presence. "Hrrm. What's all this then?" he asks to no one in particular.
Over the course of several hours, you look around the lab. (If someone tries to open the journal, it would be with an investigation check.)
With much effort and a fair amount of guess work, the main control lever is switched on, the headlights cast a bright glow and a spark begins arcing across several surfaces within the cabin. A whirring sound starts t increase in pitch and volume until it stabilizes, just before a valve opens to release a jet of steam from the outer hull. "Looks like you got that deathtrap moving again, eh? So, who's driving this thing?" Ctenmiir asks.
Sigurd approaches Ctenmiir, "So coffin-man, do you know about this contraption? Will the machine help us with the ooze, since it seems uninterested in you?"
“Woohoo - !” Seeing the headlights roar on, Omiy jumped up and cheered excitedly. Her legs are a bit sore from crouching down and working for a couple hours, wiping off the sweat on her forehead, she sees Ctenmiir crawls out of the ooze.
“Wow, you are a buzzkill, aren’t you?” She rolls her eyes at Ctenmiir’s comment, but still fairly enthusiastic nonetheless. She smacks her hand against the metal hull, ready to step inside the driver’s seat. “I will do it - I’ve got quite a bit experience, driving grinders back in the army. This baby shouldn’t be too hard. ”

If anyone doesn't want to get in, speak up otherwise I'll assume everyone joins in. Before you go, there are some items you find: Huarache: 50 = A hovering, apple-sized orb of metal that follows you around, Omiy : 50 = A metal bracelet that displays the number of steps you’ve taken since your last long rest .
So, Huarache speaks Gnomish and tried to pick the lock of the book with a 24, but if that would be Investigation, then the roll would become a 23. He also would have been helping to try and fix up the mechanical thing, although it seems to have been fixed while I was unable to respond to posts.
Like, with a padlock, or with magic? If the former, Huarache will pull out some Thieves' Tools (24). If the former, well, Artificers don't get Knock for whatever reason.
In either case, Huarache will continue looking at various contraptions and blueprints, taking his own notes.
Ooc: thanks. I remebered the question, forgot the roll. The journal doesn't open at the use of thieves' tools, but Huarache avoids the lightning damage it would usually deal at an attempted opening. Try an investigation check.
Edit: I have to count TT use as an attempt, because it is a trap, you just avoided the trap. Opening it would require another roll, which anyone can make those with proficiency in investigation can also help.
The DC is 20, but attemlts to access that do not circumvent security measures do not act as a trap. Its basically a puzzle box and Kwalish feeks that if someone cannot ipen jt, they should t see what is jnside of it. An attempt takes an hour, after 8 hours of effort, the roll becomes unnecessary.
Stabby will clamber into the machine and try to find a comfortable spot inside. With that done he will sheathe his shortsword and poke about the machine. "Move!" He squawks out in a voice that sounds like an enraged child after a toy didn't work in the way they wanted.
As everyone loads into the vehicle, yiu seal the hatch woth the spin of a large bolt mounted wheel. Omiy, Huarache and others who think rbey know what thwyre doing begin turning dials and mocong levers, causing the crustaceaform vehicle to crawl towars the moon pool of ooze, up over the side and down knto the flooded foetar level of the tower, wheree you exit through a hole in the side of the tower, fitted woth sliding hangsr doors thstsre presently open.
I know the garage would needto be pressurized for a moonpool to finction, but this is a life form, not water, we just need to keep it from creeping out, I'm sure Kwalish has a means of keeping the ooze at bay theough some kind of gradient or field.
Incidentally the ooze is basically a gelatinous cube with a few changes.
At this point you have the option to continue in crab mkde or retrsct the legs and operate the vehicle as a submarine.
Unlike the figures seen standing staidly along the edges of the towers above, the hundreds of glass statues that fill Daoine Gloine have been arranged on the streets and in open courtyards as if staging scenes of city life—a market square, a royal personage holding court, and so forth. In addition to the statues, huge numbers of glassy baubles are spread throughout these scenes, serving as stand-ins for fruit in a market, as huge jewels worn at a ball, as a scepter and orb held by a statue noble, and so forth. Looking around, the legends appear almost true: here is a city inhabited entirely by folk of crystal, and whose every possession is crystal as well.

Sigurd observes the city uneasily.
"Something feels off here. It looks like something arranged this." He looks around at the faces of the humanoid figures. Trying to see what their expressions are.

If the Thieves' Tools wouldn't have been applicable, then replacing Thieves' Tools with Investigation would make the roll a 23. If I need to roll Investigation anew, then 22 is my total. Here's hoping.

The expressions on most of the statuea of kenku are serene (to a non-kenku this is clear from posture) worh some decidely less sedate. All the other crystal humanoid figures are horrified: an elf screaming as he turns on heel to flee, a dwarf pleading on her knees, a human woman sobbing.

Omiy can’t really figure out how to interpret the diagrams, but she squats down next to Sigurd, watching him fiddle around and she trys to be helpful.

“Sure” Hondo sighs, “Let’s hop into the gnome jalopy.” He inspects the interior, “Hmm, it looks like it should protect us from the ooze.”

At street level, you see the following:

EDIT: Well, that wasn't much different.

As Huarache pilots the mechanical vehicle throught the streets, he gets uneasy looking at them. Are there any Tabaxi present?
