Huarache takes off his satchel and unhooks the latches. "If we're heading into the ocean," he says, stepping into the bag, "I might be able to increase our food supply." He lowers himself into the bag, comically deeper than he should logically be able to step into such a bag. "Give me a moment; I'm sure I had it somewhere around here,"he mutters, now fully inside of the bag. "Aha!"Huarache climbs out of the bag holding a fishing pole, which, like Huarache, should not have been able to fit in the bag. He is also holding a tackle box with fishing equipment and some scraps of bait.
I don't have water vehicle proficiency. Is the wind going in the right direction for sailing?
"Lovely!" Dorian exclaims. "I was going to pick some fishing gear up myself before we left, but I ran out of time -- got up in my spellbook," he admits, a little sheepishly.
OOC: I have been doing every piece of research on Lantan I can do. I can't find a single thing that would give a plausible reason for Huarache knowing how to handle WVs, and he definitely doesn't have a background that would give him WV proficiency.
"We all get absorbed in projects sometimes. Don't worry, I have just about anything we might need in here," says Huarache, gesturing back at his satchel.
“A canoe on a calm river is one thing, but trying to get a boat big enough for ten of us to stay afloat in the midst of a coming storm,” Vernell points to the Storm front to the East. “The best we could hope for would be to die before the undead hordes got us. The ocean is not the friend of amateurs.”
(if I understand correctly, this isn’t a port, but there are locals? Maybe someone who could help us sail around?)
I might have glossed over it, but there used to be a very small community here. It was overrun by zombies and the graveyard was defiles, corpses dug up by ghouls. The sheds are still here though someone might be using them for something.
You could definitely sail on the wind you have here. The boat up north came from father North still, so winds are not going to be a problem.
Don't worry about the wv proficiency, just could have added your proficiency bonus to navigation checks. Although, I suppose going with oars would be the seafaring equivalent of 'careful movement' on land, halving your speed.
(We do want to be careful, around the rocks here at least)
"I think we have some time before the storm nears," Dorian says. "We're planning on hugging the coastline anyway, so we can reconsider once the storm is closer."
Don't worry about rocks, I just said there was a rock to explain why someone's amazing perception roll saw a thing that is there but nobody noticed before because I wasn't going to tell you about it. Forget rocks. But there are definitely other hazards. That's true everywhere in Chult though
“I don’t think we’re gonna get that far away from shore that we will actually be and what would be considered the ocean. “LeeAnn says. “As long as we stay close to the shore I think will be fine. “
"I could prepare a spell for walking on water from tomorrow onward in case the storm catches us. And if you are worried about food, I have access to magic that can conjure food enough for over a dozen people", Tel offers after thinking on the situation for a second.
Vernell nods as the others throw in their two cents. “Sounds like I’m worrying too much then. Sure let’s do all of that. And Tel that’s a good plan, too. I’ll watch for trouble while you all get set.”
Vernell sends out Absalom as an invisible imp to scout the beach from about 20 feet up.
The imp sees many common sights in Chult. A herd if hadrosaurs down each, some large creatures flying high over the coastline, a few rather large marine animals breaching the water from time to time. The usual.
OOC: Hold on. Large marine animals? Can you please, for me, make it canon in the campaign that they are ichthyosaurs? My bois?
You know, they just found one with the torso of another reptile in its stomach that was ca. 60% the size of the ichthyosaurus IRL. Sure you still want those swimming out in those waters?
I like ichthyosaurs. My name should attest to that. And speaking of shonisauruses in particular, they ate small marine animals like small squid, belemnites, and soft fish, not boats with larger creatures. I am not demanding a fight with ichthyosaurs at all, but if you could say that Huarache identifies a creature maybe a kilometer off as a shonisaurus, it would be like this (https://knowyourmeme.com/photos/1483785) for me. I know it's dumb, but I like paleomarine biology.

Ooh, Guizhouichthyosaurus was a cousin of Shonisaurus! This is absolutely fascinating; thank you for sending me this!
On another note: As the party sets about getting ready for travelling over water, Huarache will put back the fishing tackle, then offer help to anyone who is making preparations for boat travel.
Leann assumes we are going by boat. If the others wish to do something else she has no problem walking either. Whatever keeps them moving towards their destination. She would not wish to stand around too long anywhere, that just risks something finding you here in Chult.

Yes. Incidentally, this is what I was talking about: https://www.ucdavis.edu/news/ichthyosaurs-last-meal-evidence-triassic-megapredation/
