The villagers were very much alive when Marav saw them last.

As to the growths on the keep, they sound like something that one might find in the Underdark. And the way Ink described the dying flora sounds to Marav as if the decay that had set in yesterday is rapidly spreading.

Marav shortly receives a message via the sending stone from Pim: "Marav, please report with force strength. How many undead, and from where are they coming?"

 The forest is very dark under the canopy, giving Ink partial concealement for the approach. 

 

Marav takes the stone in his hand and whispers into it, "Uhm... 60 or 70. A necromancer or something has converted the entire town. Wish us luck, we can't just leave this here."

He places a hand on Flint's shoulder. "Run faster my friend." Energy flows from Marav into Flint, 

Flint can feel his movement become slightly faster.
