Seeing the dire straits the party is in upon feeling the polymorph spell fade, Ink casts message towards where he remembers leaving the freed dwarves and says, "Run! Up and out! As fast as you can! Fire giants have caught up to us!"
He then continues moving towards the exit. Quill breaks off from harassing the giants and flies ahead of Ink back the way they came knowing to let out a screech if any trouble awaits ahead!
After the giants' second barrage of flying slag, Ink continues dashing towards the exit!
Ink turns around and faces the giants, having put his bow away. Touching his component pouch and lifting his other hand, a fog cloud begins to coalesce near the mouth of the the entry between the foundry and the mines, obscuring the retreating party from the giants' vision.
Ink the tuns around and continues his escape, not shouting so that he doesn't give away his position.
Quill continues to scout ahead for the groups escape.
// FOG CLOUDat level TWO, so radius of 40 feet (diameter of 80 feet), placed in such a way that current positions are obscured, as well as the party's escape out to the mines.
The giants apparently know when to quit. No more slag comes flying through the fog, allowing you to escape.
You are able to follow Quill into the mines, as long as you have some sort of light source by which to guide you. The rescued dwarven prisoners follow you, albeit at a slower pace.
Before long, you begin to hear heavy footfalls some ways behind you, and distant shouts of echoing giant voices.
Passive Perception: In addition to the yelling and footfalls, it sounds as if the elevator may have been engaged.
You have never ridden on the gigantic mechanism, so you are unsure of how fast it is, but you are aware that there are multiple stops that it could make here in the mines.
Ink sends out Quill scouting, when possible and close enough to the elevator shaft, into the elevator shaft itself, hoping to gauge how many giants are on the elevator and how fast it seems to be moving and how many stops it pauses at along the way.
Ink will, every now and again, slip into Quill's senses to see things himself, using Crownsguard and Flint for support to maintain speed up and out.
Ink also asks everyone to try and listen out for the elevator in the hopes of finding a stop-start-stop rhythm to better guesstimate the speed of the ascending elevator.
Quill is able to gauge the distance between the top of the elevator shaft. You are a three levels up, and the elevator is rising at a good clip (~20 feet per round). It stops, a couple levels below you, for about 30 seconds before starting back up and ascending once more. There are at least a dozen levels to the mines, possibly more. You've been running hard for almost half an hour, and you know that it's going to take at least two or three more hours before you reach the top (where the Yakfolk Village is).
The elevator, on the other hand, is rising straight up. Even if it stops at every level, it will still beat you to the top with hours to spare if you continue to ascend through the mines—that is, if you're not caught first.
Quill counts four armored fire giants on the elevator below. None of them get off on the first stop, but they are peering warily around. The elevator stops once more, at the level below you, and pauses for about 30 seconds before continuing to ascend.
Ink looks to Flint, saying, "I have an idea, but I'll need your immovable rod and some spell]guidance[/spell]..."
Ink has Quill grab the immovable rod, using her talons to switch it on and off so that her talons get the feel for it even though they both understand that Ink will be entering her senses and guiding her through the process.
The owl flies off, Ink holds onto Crownsguard and Flint and says, "Help me keep moving, I'll be inside Quill's head for a little while..."
// Perception (INT) Check using Quill's proficiency and Ink's intelligence with Guidance from Flint... 23
Quill has found the weak point in the mechanism. The elevator is suspended by three massive chains, by which is is lowered and raised. The gear that runs the elevator is powered by the wooden water wheel that you saw in the Yakfolk village. That is the spot that you'll need to target with the immovable rod, but that will mean that Quill needs to fly up to the top of the 500-foot shaft, and out of contact with Ink. You won't know if it works until it starts working.
The elevator is still ascending, and the echoing voices are getting a bit louder.
