Hi all! I've DM'd a PbP campaign from Dragon Heist through the first two levels of DotMM and we lost one of our regulars (times are crazy!) Know that this is a steady group that has stuck it out for well over a year. We are looking for someone of similar commitment to join our number.
DotMM is a bit of paint-by-numbers dungeon dive with very little in the way of plot. To counter this, and any potential monotony of 20 levels of maze and monsters, I am weaving my own plot into the mix wherein the faction agents of Waterdeep are pursuing someone carrying a dangerous artifact into the depths of Undermountain for unknown reasons. The heroes are reporting back to the surface regularly as they track a foe that is currently too powerful for them to fight.
The heroes are composed of a monk (DM PC), an eldritch knight fighter, a warlock, and a paladin.
The villain has also hired a band of mercenaries to help him navigate the dungeon and clear the way for him and his iron golem, which is carrying the ancient and powerful artifact. This has allowed for us to have a dynamic in which we switch off every other chapter between the heroes and the villains.
The villains are composed of a warlock/rogue, a sorcerer, and a druid/monk.
To apply:
Submit TWO character concepts, one to join the heroes and one to join the villains. The chosen player will roll up the characters after I have made the selection. All characters will start at level 7 and will level together after each chapter.
For the hero, please provide the following:
The character's name
The character's race
The character's class(es)
The character's faction (if any)
How the character came to partner with the other heroes in the ownership of their new tavern.
For the villain, please provide:

You may post more than once but please keep your submissions to only one hero and one villain per post. We are doing a pretty straight playthrough, so a totally wacky character concept will probably not fly. I will make my final decision in 72 hours. Feel free to ask for any clarifications and I should respond within 12 hours at the most.
How the character came to partner with the other heroes in the ownership of their new tavern. Sizan was something of a regular at the tavern since its founding, who would often provide some helpful tip on the going-ons around town and sometimes even other factions. It's possible he even has helped from the shadows or even openly once or twice with a scrap, if albeit at the behest at times from his superiors. Regardless, having long harbored a more stable business to "retire" to, he offered his more direct services in exchange for a cut in the business profits upon learning of their being down an active partner.
For the hero above:
For the villian below:
The character's name: Rimara Redrum(last name pending, though could be explained away due to last question's answer)
The character's race: Grey Dwarf(Duergar, Underdark Dwarf, etc)
The character's class(es): Cleric 6/Fighter 1
The character's faction: Zhentarim (or Potentially Corrupt Lord's Alliance Member if better fit)
How the character knows the Black Blades and came to replace their missing number (who I will write out by having him arrested): Not sure how deep into detail I should I should get, but the short answer would perhaps be that during whatever process the BBs have used in the past to willfully attract new members or associates in the past, she held potential, but had been initially side-lined due to concern of mental stability. While not psychotic in the sense of being a direct danger to the group, she did profess what could be potentially construed as a warped view of her supposed faith in Mouradin. Whereas most who know of Grey Dwarves know that they were supposedly cast out for some serious crime or incident in the past. Regardless, as one to have yet remained interested and possess a nevertheless helpful skill set, she would be given her shot at last.

Hero: The character's name: Lark Strongarm The character's race: Variant Human The character's class(es): Mastermind Rogue The character's faction: Ex - City Watch Investigator, recruited to Gray Hands How the character came to partner with the other heroes in the ownership of their new tavern: The Blackstaff wanted a man close to the quickly rising party of adventurers, and sent Lark to join them. He offered for Watch patrols to go by their tavern more often, his contacts within the city, his own notable abilities, and to pay for his share of the tavern. Hi this sounds like a lot of fun and I'd love to join.
Hero: The character's name: Zeno Stormborn The character's race: Human The character's class(es): Tempest Cleric 2/ Storm Sorcerer 5 The character's faction: Emerald Enclave How the character came to partner with the other heroes in the ownership of their new tavern: Having spent years traveling alone throughout the Forgotten Realms as guide and a protector of nature, Zeno was reassigned to monitor the immediate areas surrounding Waterdeep. Entering the city routinely, Zeno stumbled across the tavern one day and quickly grew to love the place and all of the other regulars who frequented the establishment as it helped in his transition to a more "urban life" that he was not accustomed to after many years in the wilderness. In gratitude, Zeno offered to buy a small stake of the place and offered his assistance should they ever need ever arise.
Villain: The character's name: Kasana The character's race: Drawf The character's class(es): Ranger (Fey Wanderer) The character's faction: Zhentarim or Bregan D'aerthe (as a special hire/exception) How the character knows the Black Blades and came to replace their missing number: A noted thief known by her alias, "The Mist" (working title), and famous for the treasures she's absconded with from the Feywilds and throughout the Forgotten Realms, she's hired by the Black Blades to assist in this venture as her skills in the Wilds and her aptitude for stealthy infiltration were deemed especially useful to the tasks at hand.

The character's name: Saralissa The character's race: Forest Gnome The character's class(es): Wizard (Evoker) The character's faction (if any): Harper? How the character came to partner with the other heroes in the ownership of their new tavern. Saralyssa is a sage who studdies in Blackstaff Tower. She has spent some time in the newly-opened tavern, and has found she enjoyed the establishment. When they had need of some coin she stepped up and offered them to join their partnership, and bring funds with her to help the business. All-in-all it has been a great business decision on her part.
For the villain, please provide:

As a member of one of the more powerful houses in Waterdeep, Morgan has often went against his family's wishes, and befriending the 'Blades' was one of these acts. His father sees them as nothing more than tools to be used, while Morgan has grown into a trusted part of the 'Blades' over the years.

How the character came to partner with the other heroes in the ownership of their new tavern. Viran was in town doing some research on the caverns and dungeons underneath Waterdeep when he heard about a group of adventurers who'd recently come into possession of a tavern that was haunted and agreed to help sort out the situation in exchange for a partial stake in ownership. He wasn't really interested in the money, but free lodging and a handy place to live while doing his research was very handy. As happenstance would have it, when the job opportunity arose to journey down into the very depths he'd been researching, he jumped at the chance to join with them and head down, all in the name of research of course.
For the villain, please provide:
The character's name Butat Bladeseeker
The character's race Human variant
The character's class(es) Profane Soul Bloodhunter, Undying
The character's faction none
How the character knows the Black Blades and came to replace their missing number (who I will write out by having him arrested). Butat had established a dependable reputation as a mercenary specializing in the hunting and slaying of monstrous creatures. He'd worked with the Black Blades a few times when their work strayed into his specialty. When he returned to Waterdeep after another mission, he heard about their recent opening, and, given the locale where they're currently operating, he offered his expert services.
Name: Cerdic Autumnshroud Race: Variant Human Class: Lore Bard 6 and Wizard 1 (eventually Divination) Faction: None officially, but maybe a few Harper contacts or friends How they came to partner: Cerdic was a young student at a prestigious bards college when he first learned of the legend of Hallister Blackcloak (correct me if I got his name wrong, lol). He devoted all his time not needed for bardly studies to researching more and more obscure legends of Blackcloak. Eventually he heard tell of a brave band of adventurers heading into Undermountain itself, and decided he couldn't pass up the opportunity to experience the legends personally—if they would have him.
For the villain: Name: Josnys the Clumsy Race: Drow Class: Paladin (Oathbreaker if there's content sharing, Conquest if there's not) 6 Warlock (Hexblade) 1 Faction: None How they came to partner: Josnys was ostracized from the rest of his kin due to supposed errant loyalties to a deity other than Lolth. These accusations were nought but political fabrications, but an angry and abandoned Josnys sought to make them reality. He found solace in an underground enclave to the deity Shar, goddess of darkness and loss. He ventured into the service world to find some way to bring his goddesses darkness to the surface world, and thought perhaps an expedition into Undermountain could prove fruitful. He found out about the expedition from a mercenary group he worked with occasionally.

How he came to be mixed up with them: As a murderer, covering your tracks can be hard, so you oftentimes choose some unsavory characters to cover your back; through intimidation, and rewards, when a favor was required of him: he joined the black blades... it didn't interfere with his bloodlust so it wasn't a huge sacrifice.
Hero: Marya Alloia
Race: Human
Class: NG Hunter Ranger 7
How she came to partner: After being forced to flee at a young age for slaying a village elder, by her village (He was a corrupt man who was running a criminal element, keeping the people in fear) she was forced to survive on her own. As she honed her skills, she became the best at her trade. She became a type of bounty hunter in order to survive and after several years earned enough to retire, but the wanderlust returned: after faking her death and going in search of adventure she got into the wrong side of a fight with a young gold shadow dragon, who she managed to slay, but not before losing her left hand. As she was no longer able to fight and adventure she bought a stake in a tavern, shortly before a wizard cast greater restoration, allowing her to once again regain her fighting prowess.

The character's class(es)- Ranger (horizon stalker)
The character's faction (if any)- Potentially the Harpers (I think he would be a good candidate for the Gray Hands as well, more of a patriotic city ranger)
How the character came to partner with the other heroes in the ownership of their new tavern.
Playing on the idea of being in the Gray Hands Lurrinthis would need a base of operations in the city and could use the tavern as a cover/front. If any of the other characters are in Gray Hands this could be how he found out about and invested in the tavern with the group.
The character's race- Human (variant or reg depending on DM preference)
The character's class(es)- Cleric (War domain) (worshiper of Bane, willing to make it any evil god that suits the purpose)
The character's faction (if any)- Zhentarim
How the character knows the Black Blades and came to replace their missing number (who I will write out by having him arrested).
The Zhentarim has caught wind of what is happening and when rumor had it that the crew was looking for another member they wasted no time in getting one of their own a place in the group. (I am not sure of all the politics in Waterdeep)
This sounds like a fun and interesting way to keep a game going.
Hero
Falsteir Riverfeather
Wood Half-elf
7th Level Lore Bard
Harper in name only - focuses on the "individual sovereignty" part a bit too much
Having worn out his welcome in his previous locale (again), Falsteir came to Waterdeep to "reinvent" himself. He came to the tavern to ply his bard skills and found it to be a well run establishment (or well enough) that he bought a share. Having heard of the artifact and the mission of the artifact, he ventures into the maze with his compatriots: interested in keeping them safe, they are an investment after all, and to seek this artifact (and any treasure) as it might offer more entertainment than the hum-drum life of a Harper agent.
Villan
B'aichik
Firbolg
7th Level Death Cleric of Tiamat
None - but is tasked to infiltrate the Black Blades by his Lady Cusoass, The Dark
B'aichik was raised an acolyte of nature, but is the last of his clan who attempted to rid their home of an adult green dragon, Cusoass, The Dark. She corrupted the forest and tormented B'achik to become her servant, a cleric of Tiamat. He seeks to extend the corruption of his Lady by seeking the artifact (and any other treasure) for her use as well as seeking to infiltrate the Black Blades as an extension of her Queen's will in this plane. B'aichik is the one who gets the "traitor" arrested.
