(OOC: There is a lot going on here, which is a good thing, but I'll have to take it in parts. As mentioned in the OOC Chat, this rest will be longer than just 8 hours. Please bare with me a bit and avoid hitting the "Long Rest" button until we are actually done with the rest.)
PREPARATIONS
-> Ang suggests the group bunkers together in Lord Weirding's room, remembering that it was the only room in the third floor absent of any kind of danger to her best recollection. Khan winces at the suggestion but, noticing she was the only one, eventually relents.
-> Khan reminds the grungs to take their daily baths and, with the help of Gnator, directs the frogling to take their turns in the second level's guest washrooms.
-> Saros sets up an alarm protecting the room's entrance and requests a full night of sleep, and then some, so she can achieve a multitude of tasks.
-> Ghee tells Celest and Gnator the plan. Unless there is strong opposition, Celest asks to sleep in her own room "one last night so she can dream of Dicky." Gnator asks if he can keep her company and she agrees. The gnome sets up a place to sleep in one of the corners.
-> Khan ensures that the window in the teenager's room is blocked by heavy furniture. The same goes for the manor's front door.
Everyone is awake and aware for the first two hours. The group settles in for some conversation/catching-up/bonding but mostly to finally relax a bit in a group setting. Gnator explains to those who did not hear it the first time that all other servants fled, so they'll have to find their own supper. It shouldn't be a problem though, and the group eats a mixture of their own rations and whatever they can find in the pantry that requires no cooking before consumption.
During this time, Saros shares with the group the details of the items he collected. He claims the Spell Scroll of Fireball for himself, while Khan suggests that the Potion of Healing (Greater) is passed on to Ghee.
After an hour of bonding, Bleep decides to spend the next hour getting acquainted with his new Robe of Stars. Likewise, Ang finds a quiet corner to practice with her Ring of Invisibility a bit more. Similarly, Saros decides to study the third item he collected earlier so he can identify its magical properties.
(@Muggshill: I'll need a detailed description on how exactly is Saros examining the deck of cards. What is he doing to them?)
Right - what is he doing, well, what he is not doing is drawing any cards, I think he will bite the bullet and cast Identify rather than play around with the chance of a very bad chance outcome.
(OOC: I don't think casting spells, ritual or not, can be technically part of a rest. That said, since this rest is going to be longer than 8 hours anyway, I am willing to be a bit more flexible.)
STILL WITHIN THE FIRST TWO HOURS OF REST
Supper comes to an end and the conversations begin to die down. Ang is now confident that she can fully reap the benefits of the Ring of Invisibility and Bleep comes out of his corner wearing a new Robe of Stars that strangely looks like it would fit a teenaged girl quite well. (You may attune to your items.)
Hearing no other claims, Ghee places the Potion of Healing (Greater) within his pack. (Please add it to your inventory.)
Just as folks are getting ready to lay down, Saros reemerges from his latest Identify ritual holding the closed metal box that contains a magical deck of cards within. He explains to the group that it is a Deck of Many Things (13 cards).
(OOC: Ok, pausing the rest here again so you can decide how to react to that. Is anyone drawing a card? If so, declare how many cards you'll be drawing and then roll a single d13. If you chose to draw more than one card, we'll get to your subsequent roll(s) after the first one is resolved.)
After the rest, Ang watch Saros contemplating a strange Deck of Card. She has ever heard about a magical deck of card. When she feels that she can talk to the wizard, she approaches and whispers: " What is this thing? It looks magical, can I look at the card?"
If Saros genuinely explains to the group the possibilities contained within the deck, then... Khan would be tempted, but hold her hands as if to suppress even reaching out for one if the deck is presented before them.
"Khan... give much to make group whole again.... But Khan not complete fool. Know better then tempt fate like so.... if there is no other way to help B'lip...." She looks over to the Grung, then bows her head. "Khan is patient. Rest of you-..." She looks more pointedly at the remaining living Grung. "Be patient too. Even if gamble, not simple matter to erase mistakes. Better to not erase at all, but move on. Adapt. Accept... It is the way."Khan nods solemnly at that, then settles back into a restful state until it was time for her watch.
"Khan not take card or two if offering. Not yet. Nor Khan steal. Not Goblin... Saros... you troublesome but kept... end of deal so far. Help Khan find missing members. If can fix member too in morning, it would be enough for Khan. If not but try, still enough."She added for Saros' sake, even if she hadn't opened her eyes again.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
When you realize you're doing too much: Signature.
(OOC Added the potion and have taken a few rations out to account for dinner and for some who likely don't - Celest, Gnator, Cawdor. Assuming the grungs will want to take care of Blip and Bloop.)
"Ah think Ah'll pass oan a card. Ah've seen enough o' tha weird shenanigans that go oan here. Ah dinnae need tae see mair."
OOC: Assume that Saros would explain to Ang and the others what he knows or deduces of the potential outcomes of drawing cards from the deck
OOC: The below assumes none of the other Grung are willing to defy Khan's cautioning but will amend if Ang or the others still want to draw a card.
Hearing the caution in the responses from the group, Ssros gives a sagely nod and adds "You are all right to be cautious, the gains may be great but you would risk much". With no takers he adds "May we also take the Deck back to Candlekeep with us....?"
As Khan acknowledges that the Watchers have remained true to the pact he responds in kind "Indeed, despite our differences working together has truly sided both groups I think....neither of us alone would likeky have bested Weirding.....now what remains is to see if there is a chance to bring B'lip back for you....but I need sleep first. I promise on waking I will study its pages"
OOC: What are Cawkrin's skills and would he be of any use in aiding the study?
(OOC: Despite my peer-pressure, you guys went with the reasonable approach. 😁)
STILL WITHIN THE FIRST TWO HOURS OF REST
Saros explains the high-risk-high-reward nature of the magical deck of cards. Ang shows some interest in the it, as does Khan, but the orange grung delineates clear conditions that would have to be met before she (and possibly other grungs) should reasonably consider drawing a card. Nonetheless, the grungs seem to agree that the answer to Blip's condition may lie within the deck, so drawing a card is not entirely out of the realm of possibility at a later time. Once Ghee also vocalizes his unwillingness to play with the cards, Saros generalizes the decision and puts the deck in his pack for safekeeping.
With that, most settle in to sleep. The exception is Ang, who recruits Bloop's help and volunteers for the first watch.
(OOC: Unfortunately, Bloop has a point of exhaustion, so that Nat20 may not hold. Here's a second roll: 16)
For the next two hours, Ang and Bloop roam the third and second floors of the mansion as if they were guards doing their rounds. During this time, Ang is mostly distracted by the thought of possibly curing Blip with something as simple as drawing a card from a deck. Despite being quite tired, Bloop falls back into his ranger routine quite well.
At one point, he tells Ang that he heard the buzzing of insects and looked outside. He found that flies and other buzzers have started to congregate around some of the bodies left outside. Ang details the fight against Lord Weirding, filling in Bloop on the recent danger they found themselves in.
Bloop's tiredness begins to get a hold of him and Ang decides it is time to wake Darrik up for the next watch.
Darrik opts to take this watch on his own, so that Cawkrin and others can get a good night of sleep. A bit curious about what Gnator said earlier, the druid walks over the entire mansion, just to be sure no other servant was left behind. It takes a good chunk of time to inspect every nook and cranny of the house, but by the end of it, Darrik is pretty sure no other humanoid is inside the building other than the ones the group has already accounted for. Well, maybe inside the paintings...
At any rate, Darrik finishes his watch and pokes Khan awake with his staff, such that he doesn't have to touch the frogling's skin oils.
Khan rises and wakes Blip so that the green grung can join her in the watch. Despite her best encouragement, Blip is not much help when it comes to keeping an eye out for danger. HE simply grabs his dagger and continuously stabs the air. Khan decides to let him rest instead and settles him back onto a bedroll.
Khan then sneakily enters Celest's room to check on the teenager and the grounds keeper. They are both deep asleep, and the barricaded window is just as they had left it. Speaking of windows, Khan keeps an eye out on the city whenever she walks by one during her rounds. She notices that fires are not as intense as they were earlier in the day, and that the sounds of battle, cries for help, and screams of pain have mostly died down by now. She hopes that this means the Batiri goblins have moved on from their plundering, likely under new leadership.
Once it is time, Khan wakes Bleep and orders him to take care of the next watch.
Still feeling a bit groggy, Bleep stands up and begins walking around the third floor. He is having a difficult time fighting off that exhaustion, and his new robe is quite cozy. The one thing Bleep notices before sleepiness forces him to close his eyes prematurely is the fact that Saros has woken up a bit earlier than the others so that he can start reading his new tome: "Brain Dead, a Psionic’s Guide to Necromancy."
Fortunately for Bleep, he opens up his eyes again just before the others begin waking up. There is no way of knowing how long he was asleep for. At least, it does not look like Saros noticed that Bleep fell asleep during his watch, so the secret is the green grung's to keep. Nonetheless, if anything suspicious happened during that period, there is no way Bleep would know.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
LAST TWO HOURS OF REST
(OOC: Again, please do not hit that "Long Rest" button yet. I know it has technically been more than 8 hours but the rest is not over until the rest is over, if that makes sense. This also means Saros does not have his new Portent Dice just yet.)
The group goes through their morning routines. The comforts of the home make it all that much harder to go through the motions quickly. That and the fact that many are still dealing with the final stages of exhaustion make it so the group prepares for the day at a leisurely pace, at best.
Saros welcomes this, as he can use the extra time to continue studying the tome. Ghee approaches at some point and the two agree that the dwarf should dismantle another magical painting, just in case it has imprisoned other folks. Khan continues to disagree with this approach, but it looks like Ghee and Saros have made up their minds. This "Dicky" might be in a painting after all.
Having no need to rush while working with his mallet and chisel, and having done this exact job once already, Ghee has no trouble dismantling a second painting after Saros' Mage Hand places it on the ground. They select the one painting not depicting a monster from the jungles of Chult: the one Ang has been calling the "skull ritual" painting.
It turns out that the ritual is nothing good. As soon as the frame is detached from the canvas, four flaming, floating humanoid skulls pop out and show hostility.
NOTES: A Long Rest has not been completed. Variant "Hitting Cover" rule applies. Rooms 13 and 15 are Lord Weirding's Chamber. Room 16 is Celest's Chamber. Rooms 14 and 18 jointly form the Study Library. Both rooms marked as 17 constitute the Study Lab (corpses and evil eye). I'll be rolling DM rolls in the new Encounter Builder feature in the site, as a test.
At this point, Cawkrin is still exhausted and unaware of what Ghee just unleashed in the hallway. He will continue eating some rations for breakfast.
(Bleep, Ghee, and Ang are up next. Keep in mind that Bleep goes before Ghee in the initiative order, so he'd be unaware of the situation, much like Cawkrin, unless his passive perception is higher than 15.)
Bleep is entirely unaware of the chaos outside. Until Ghee bursts in and asks for help. Bleep realized he had fallen asleep a few times, but is relieved that he has plausible deniability. (Can't really do anything until next turn due to Ghee not coming in until AFTER his turn and the aforementioned unawareness of the situation)
