Quiller will help feeding the 'pods as much as they can stand, thinking that, perhaps, like some creatures who gorge themselves these things will become a bit sluggish on a stuffed belly.

Again you here the voice in your head 'The bodies are nice, but, it is the horses that we want. We do not trust promises of future cows. That will seal the deal for us. If you want to see proof of what you'll get, one of you can look in the middle chest. That is where some of the loot Durthane wanted us to guard was kept.'
"after we see what's inside. if it's actually worth our while, we give a horse over, one that's clearly unmarked." Lukas whispers to Davril, low enough so that only the two of them can hear it, no pseudopod listening in.
The chest is unlocked and opens easily to Davril's touch. Inside are more gold coins than the half-elf has seen in his life. Some gems are visible mixed among the coins.
After about 30 seconds, a pseudopod comes over and slaps the lid down. 'You've seen what is there, no we want the horses.' Comes the voice from the mimic.
"so you have spoken truth, so too shall we get you what you wish." Lukas checks the 2 for markings (1 he knows is marked, the other not so sure of), then goes to get an unmarked horse or 2 for the process.
Having never encountered a mimic, the young thief had been completely unnerved and visibly shaken by the experience. Not wanting anything else to do with the wretched creatures Quin scrambles from the cave and returns to the large room containing the former campsite.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Quin mills about the bandits camp, kicking bedrolls and poking around at things with his dagger. The recent mimic encounter making him extra cautious about any seemingly inanimate objects. He tries to get an idea of where the bandits might have come from based on what was left behind.
Quiller, unable to help himself, ongles the gleaming gold with an unambiguous expression of greed on his face. « More ponies coming right up! » He hurries out with visions of ‘sugarplums’ dancing through his brain.

Lukas sees quiller, and when he tries to grab random ponies, grabs him and brings him close.
"Idiot! think with your brain, not a dragon's! we could lose the reward money if we let any marked horses get eaten! Check them thoroughly and make sure there are no markings, like i am!"
Quiller looks surprised at Lukas' outburst. "You think the reward of a pony could possibly be worth anything near what that treasure is worth?! I could care less about these ponies except for how many we will need to carry that trove which, in my minds eye, is a much clearer thought that of a couple of coins that may be tossed in our direction from whomever these belong to." He shakes his head. "Look, I understand you may not see, or agree, with my appreciation of the finer points of greed but, all we need to say is that those needed to carry the loot were all we could recover; I mean how are any but us to know that they became a meal for those . . . those, whatever they are? Are you going to volunteer that information? And you may think I am an idiot but, I intend to become a very rich one, one who can toss a few coins at 'idiots' who are willing to risk their lives to retrieve things for me." With that he will take the leads of any ponies not marked and lead them away, tossing over his shoulder, "We'll keep what we need for the trove is my 'idiotic' opinion."
"anyone can have money, Quiller; all it requires time and skill. But goodwill is hard to find, especially in the treacherous realms of nobility. To have the goodwill of a high noble allows us to gain access to areas otherwise forbidden to normal folk. What we lose in material we gain in favors. does that make sense to you now?"
Quin wanders by just as Lukas delivers his rebuke. With a bit of a snort he interjects, "heh, don't know why we're feeding them at all. If you ask me I say we fill the room with lamp oil and burn them all out." The thief reflexively open and closes his fists in rememberance of being trapped.

"ok, we open it from a distance." Lukas has his longsword ready to lift the lid once someone unlocks it.
Davril nods, "I'll check it out, you take that branded pony back and look for one that isn't."
"after we see what's inside. if it's actually worth our while, we give a horse over, one that's clearly unmarked." Lukas whispers to Davril, low enough so that only the two of them can hear it, no pseudopod listening in.
Davril moves forward and opens the indicated chest, poking it with his spear first to be safe.

Only 1 of the ponies is marked. Once Lukas gets back to the corral, he quickly finds one of the draft horses is not branded with the "R."

Lukas pinches his nose in aggravation.....

"then why don't you?" Lukas raises an eyebrow and quietly asks Quin.
