(OOC I 'happened' to google up this bit about animal handling:)
Animal Handling allows you to influence an animal's behavior when the animal is either domesticated, or is owned by you. If it isn't domesticated or owned by you, according to the book you can only try to intuit its intentions. RAW, you can't use animal handling to calm down an attacking bear in the wild, but a successful animal handling check might tell you whether or not it wants to eat you or is just defending its den.
Gabriel stands at the entrance to the cave, torch in hand.
Alarion and Katherine are close behind.
The middle wolf pulls the anchor bolt free. The collar is still around its neck, chain dragging. It pauses and growls, hackles rising, but ready to spring.
There's a wolf to either side of the alpha, but they haven't quite managed to wrest their chains free... yet.
Gabriel makes out a figure in the back of the cave... the source of earlier cries for help
The mound of tattered, blood dried clothes in the back of the cave rises to, perhaps,a sitting position. If so, that's a pretty large creature back there.
"Please spare them! They are starving and have been deprived of me as their meal." The voice is gravelly and deep and surprisingly stronger than the initial whimpering would have suggested.
Alarion rushes past the wolves (possibly incurring Opportunity Attacks, I know), to help support the figure. He may be weak, but some support is better than none.
the wolves on either side of the alpha wrench free and and stand beside the pack leader. One of them whines and glances to the figure in back of the cave. But then again, they are hungry mistreated wolves...
The mess of a half-orc in the back of the cave grabs the humanoid bone (improvised club), that had been concealed by some nearby garbage, and rises to a standing position. The collar around his neck and chain restraining him are now visible to all.
Alarion was about to bravely dash through the chained wolves... but then the other two wolves pulled their bolts out of the ground... messing up that plan.
The chained half-orc rising behind the wolves seems less helpless than his cries for help might have suggested.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Kathrine initiative: 17
She pulls out her crossbow as the wolves pull free. She would hate to have to use it, but she will not let a couple beasts keep her from doing her god's work either.

oh no! that was a 'ONE' before bonuses...
But it was just an initiative roll, so nothing bad happens, except being a bit slow on drawing out your crossbow. No doubt you wish there was another way... but the wolves are hungry and attack the party
When his turn comes, Rowen will attempt to hide then fire his bow at one of the wolves if they continue to attack, or use his shortsword if one closes the distance.
"Easy boys, it's ok, easy." Gabriel looks around for the individual the voice he heard belongs to.

Alarion's darkvision is a bit confused by the torchlight, and of course there is the distraction of the wolves wanting to make a meal out of you...
