Back at the cauldon, Thariv draws on the power of his ancestral house and its mark, using a magical gust to help clear the air, at least a little, before the group decides to move elsewhere.
At the stables, Clipper leads Thariv around as they work together looking for signs of anything important.
Going into the stables, truffles scratches at a specific brick on the back wall. Probing at it, Luther finds that it opens a secret door leading out of the fortress. By the looks of it, it has not been used in a very long time.
There is no hay left, not even mice for the cats to eat.
"OK, on to the locked building I guess". Luther gets Truffles to look for a kitty-sized entrance or clue to a back way in, while he checks the door and lock for traps.
The locked door belongs to a building larger than the watch house, but smaller than the main keep. The wall are plain stone, with only small ventilation holes near the top. The closed door looks sturdy. The lock keeping it closed is visible from this size, some proficient with thieves' tools may be able to pick it. The hinges seem a bit rusty and Luther gets the feeling that it may be possible to just bash the door to get inside.
OOC: you would need a dexterity check to pick the lock or a Strength (Athletics) to bash it in.
Squeaks! Buzz, purr! Hoomin, stand here, right by lock, pick me up! Purr, buzz! The hungry kitty reaches in, slides his claws out, a turn of his kitty wrist, and...
Ryo lazily walks over, holding Cupcake in his arms and glancing at Ryota and his kitty. The kitty sticks its paw in and turns the lock around. "Wow," Ryo remarks, impressed, "never would I have thought that a cat could pick a lock."
Squeaks manages to make the lock turn, Ryota pushes the door open to reveal a large room full of rotted beds and chests on one side and a large weapons rack on the opposite wall. These are clearly the old barracks.
A ring with a single iron key hangs lonely in the rack. The few chests that remain are empty. A large iron cell occupies the northwest corner. Inside you see a skeleton over a pile of rags and a piece of parchment in the floor.
Luther watches in amazement as Squeaks picks the lock, raising an eyebrow to Truffles as his own companion returns from his recce. Seeing the question forming on the archer's face, Truffles narrows his eyes as if to say "That's not my thing"
Grateful not to have had to use force, Luther steps into the room and looks around. Ignoring the key for a moment, he inspects the rags and parchment.
In case needed, Perception: 12 and Investigation: 22
Clipper trots into the room, with Thariv a step or two behind. Thariv bends and scratches Clipper between the ears. "Do you know how to pick a lock, too? I bet you do, and that you can take the helm of a sailing ship, too!"
Thariv holds back while Luther checks out the dusty artifacts in the room. He waits to see if the skeleton is a regular skeleton, or something more sinister, before doing much of anything else.
Ryo puts Cupcake on his head so he have free hands to work. "Man, scary?" He comments, referring to the skeleton in the cell before he picks up the ring with the iron key and moves over to open the large cell.
The iron key in the wall fits the cell lock. It takes more effort than usual, but the lock finally turns and you are able to enter the cell. The skeleton crumbles into small pieces after Ryota's blow.
The rags seem to be ordinary clothes. The parchment is old and its borders start to crumble when Luther picks it up. Poorly drawn letters read "... please let me go speak to the duke. I am inocent! you have to believ me!!" Whoever this person was, it's too late for them now.
None of the cats seems interested in the old bones here.
A mystery? But no names, no dates, like one puzzle piece for a one thousand piece puzzle... Can I keep that parchment? It might come in useful later...Anyone else for a break? Sorry about that skeleton, my head was somewhere else right then :(
Luther looks at the crumbling parchment, transfixed. "I don't think I've ever seen anything so old". He lets Ryota take the crumbling page, grateful to no longer be responsible for it.
"So we have a very dead person, pleading to another person to let him speak to a Duke - and both of them are probably dead. This is either the realm's coldest murder case or a very intriguing mystery"
Maybe it's dust in the wind... or perhaps the most important parchment in the world...time will tell. Meanwhile I'm thinking the kibble kommittee has reached a consensus for how best to draw and quarter us, yes?
Ryota looks over to where the cats are just standing there in semicircle, glaring at the humans, all of whom are clearly holding back on rations ...

(OOC: is this a door to the outside we just came from, or an unexplored area?)
The secret door goes to the same outside area that you came from, but in a different wall, not the one you climbed to get in.
