Tommary whispers, "I don't remember us leaving the lights on down there, gonna check it out."
Tommary the Unworthygoes toward the light, but like all quiet like and skulky. He'll also keep his eyes peeled for whatever the illumination may reveal ahead of him.
As Tommary moves closer, he sees that the light which at first seemed to pulse is actually panning about like a search light. Lying in the muck and hiding behind the rotten remains of Pagh he sees a floating sphere with thick stalks of hair or tentacles on top. The light seems to emanate from a large eye in the center of the sphere. It focuses attention and twitches from corridor to corridor.

Tommary the Unworthysends message toward Ilyara, "Layla's replacement? Floating ball with like a big light throwing eye and a bunch of spikey stalks or tendrils or something on top. I can try this mind talk on it, I think."

It may be a creature known as a beholder but as only the large eye is casting light, it is hard to tell.

OOC: Just didn't want to go full meta in case Tommary's universe didn't have a lot of contact or lore with aberrations ... but he did find rules to this game called Poke Man in the vaults so he might have found it in the esoterica related to that ;D.
IC: Tommary's going to give a moment for the party to come up with other ideas before Tommary tries the dialogue approach (unless through reading the rules to Poke Man, though never finding anyone to play with, it is determined that beholder's are essentially evil 24/7 with no interest in productive negotiations).

OOC: Query. Given a beholder's antimagic cone thingus...did Ilyara actually receive that message, and if not does Tommary know his spell dun got itself quietly suplexed?

OOC: You did get the message and Tommary has no indication that there was any mis-cast. Of course the light wasn't constantly focused on him either.
Tommary the Unworthy but Occasionally Observant has a hypothesis that this presumed Beholder may have been dumped into Layla's spot as a replacement by Whatzhizname the Defiler of an Otherwise Perfectly Good Volcano (like the Empire in the Reels turned Illum into Starkiller Base ... that place had an exhaust port too...). He'll keep watch on the being to see if he can discern from its movments whether it seems in control of its space, confused, etc.

I really got no idea what goes on in that guy's head. Dependable sort in a scrap though, an' that counts for a lot. Just...keep a listen, and if ye hear screamin' we all bolt towards it."

message to Ilyra, "Seems like it's on guard duty, deftinitely thinking it's Layla's replacement." Followup message to Ilyra, "I think I can talk to its mind while keeping my cover here."

“Oh no, I’ve heard about those things! They’re all nuttier than a fruitcake. Do you think he knows what he’s doing?” Toots creeps forward as well: (Stealth23). 🤞
Just in case that damned dice roller wants to go screwy again:
Ilyara stops dead for a moment, head slowly turning to stare at Toots. A welter of expressions fun across her face for a moment...then she turns back to her skullduggery without a word.
