In a recent game I played I had my forest gnome use his racial ability Minor Illusion to hide himself. The spell block states it can be an image no larger than 5 by 5 foot. Being my gnome is small I used it to create an illusion of a crate around himself to hide from view. Seemed a clever use of it at the time. Thoughts?
Most of the uses arise out of unexpected situations - anytime you need a diversion, a lure, or a distraction. But one pretty good one is to cover up a trap, a pit, or some other hazard you intend to lure an enemy into/over.
Yeah, making objects to block sight so you can hide is definitely a good use for Minor Illusion. I also use it in conjunction with Dancing Lights (humanoid ghosty figure) to prank superstitious enemies into believing a god/ghost is talking to them, since the spell can also create sounds at a different location; just make sure to remain hidden, and it's fun.
I recently had my Bard use Minor Illusion to create letters floating in the air one by one, like he was a cheerleader, to warn several people of a prowling Catoblepas. Got the message across pretty well.

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in awhile.
