I am a bit curious about Magic Stone and it's interaction with a sling.
MAgic stone (Xanathars guide to everything) makes a stone magical and lets you add your spellcasting ability modifier to the attack roll & damage. It also states you can throw it 60ft, or use a sling.
Now, here's the bit that gets me - a Sling has a range of 30/120, meaning that at 31-60ft. range, am I correct that it is better to throw the stone than to use the sling?
Also, am I correct that by "spellcasting ability modifier" we don't include proficiency, so being proficient at slinging is going to help for that 30ft. range? Or does include proficiency, in which case the sling is only useful for over 60ft. ranges?
It looks like you got some of the text wrong. “You or someone else can make a ranged spell attack with one of the pebbles by throwing it or hurling it with a sling.” Ranged spell attacks would include proficiency per the attack rolls rules, even if they included a different character’s ability modifier.
Spellcasting ability modifier itself exlude proficiency bonus. Either way it will be included in the attack though.
The spell of 60 feet is only used when thrown, otherwise it used the sling range so one has longer range but the other at mid range doesnt suffer any disadvantage.

It would be included? I suspected that throwing a stone would be considered an improvised attack, so no proficiency!
I don’t really know what is supposed to happen from 30 to 60 feet while using a sling, because it seems confusing that you can throw the stone further than you can accurately hurl it with a sling.
But slings have incompatibilities with thrown items in game features such as magic items, fighting styles, and feats. I don’t think that thrown weapon fighting works with magic stones (they’re not weapons), whereas sharpshooter, magic weapon slings, and archery fighting style would all seem to provide benefits for magic stones used in a sling.

One advantage of using a sling is that it would technically count as a “ranged spell attack made using a ranged weapon,” so it would qualify for both Sneak Attack and the 3rd bullet point of the Sharpshooter feat, as well as some other stuff.

Interestingly, it isn't clear but I don't think that using a magic stone in a a sling would count for the first bullet point of sharpshooter, since you're making a ranged spell attack.

I have never understood why this is accepted when using a Sling and not throwing the rock manually. Throwing the rock is still making an attack with an improvised weapon. Is it that a thrown improvised weapon is not considered a ranged weapon?

A regular rock is an improvised ranged weapon, a magic stone is not. A magic stone has its own rules for being used to deal damage as a spell. If it were an improvised weapon the range would be 20/60 and you couldn’t add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll.
Yeah. It says right in the spell that throwing or using a sling is a ranged spell attack. That means it isn't an improvised weapon attack, since those aren't ranged spell attacks.

So because it's a spell attack, you'll include your proficiency bonus. If you want to cook your DM's noodle, the rabbit hole on working out the ability modifier bonuses on a magic stone fired from a sling is even deeper than it is for a longsword (and the hole for a longsword is deeper than most people give it credit for).

I would say that #2 contradicts #1 and therefore #2 applies specifically.
Yeah, the rules/rulings quindraco quotes are all accurate, but the paragraph below implies that this isn't just laid out in plain text in the spell. Being able to find the rules is certainly a different task than cowing to a conclusion on their use.
Un ataque hecho con piedra mágica es un ataque de hechizo , incluso si lanzas la piedra con una honda . El ataque no califica para nada que requiera un ataque con arma, pero funciona con una característica que requiere un arma a distancia si usa una honda. --- Jeremy Crawford.
