I’m trying to understand how Max HP is calculated for a level 1 Rogue. According to the rules:
Hit Dice: 1d8 per rogue level Hit Points at 1st Level: 8 + your Constitution modifier Hit Points at Higher Levels: 1d8 (or 5) + your Constitution modifier per rogue level after 1st
But when I create a test character (high elf) with manual hit point type and a Constitution modifier of 0, the character is created with 12hp. I’d have expected it to 8hp. Can anyone explain how the app is calculating that?
The way the DnDBeeyond characher sheet creator works are manual is this:
In the manage hit points there are 3 boxes:
Rolled Hit Points: This is the total of what you "rolled" for Hit points. The system will add you bonus due to con (if any) but does not take account of the fact you don't need t oroll at level 1 you just take the max
Hit point modifier is a way of changing your max hit points so for example if a monster attacks you and does 5 damage which also reduced your max hit poonts by 5 you could put -5 in this box.
Override HP using this box overrides what is in the other boxes if you enter something in here it is your total hit points.
When you first create a character I think it puts a random roll in the manage hit points but this is not changed if you do something like change from a bararian to a rogue.
So starting a level 1 rogue you should put 8 in the "Rolled Hit points" box. As an alternative you can calculate you hitp points manually (8 + con for a rogue so in your case still 8) and put thart into the override box.
But when I create a test character (high elf) with manual hit point type and a Constitution modifier of 0, the character is created with 12hp. I’d have expected it to 8hp. Can anyone explain how the app is calculating that?
Thanks!
I just tried it and created a High-Elf Rogue with a score of 10 in CON and it came out at 8 hp just as it should. You got a link to you character so we can check?.
I am getting the same behavior right now. It looks like whenever you select "Manual" for HP on page 1 of creation, the default is 12 rolled HP, and you literally need to manually keep track of your HP. If you start with fixed HP and then change it to manual, the behavior seems correct; you start with 8 rolled HP, and can add more for additional levels.
If you select “Manual HP” before you select your class, the system doesn’t know which hit die to use so it automatically default la to the largest which is the Barbarian’s d12. (It’s a system glitch.) In that case simply manually adjust your HP down by 4 and you’re good to go. In future, select your class first, then it will know which die to use and automatically calculate things correctly for you.

Ah, that explanation makes sense with the behavior I saw. When I changed it to manual, it was after I had selected a class.

HP Level 1 is max HD + CON mod. It's most certainly a bug, a high elf rogue with CON +0 should have 8 hp at 1st level.

So, to summarize, it seems like if you set Manual HP from page 1 of creation, you need to start managing HP manually from level 1.
This behavior is probably a bug, but it is a good reminder that manual really means manual.
