I'm trying to run a wild west themed campaign, and in the description for revolvers in the equipment listings says that you can choose if your character has proficiency with firearms, so can you add proficiencies to your character when creating them?
Not normally, but it's something you can do with your DM's permission. Since the only class that offers Firearm proficiency built in to the class is the Artificer, if you're playing in a Western campaign your DM has to decide if guns are just treated as Martial Weapons, or if they require a separate proficiency.
Not in the builder, but you can directly on the character sheet. Underneath your proficiencies where it says “Proficiencies & Languages,” click/tap the little cog symbol (⚙️), then select “Weapon” in the sidebar and then scroll down until you see “Firearms.”
