I'm currently setting up a game with some of my friend from back home, some of which haven't played D&D before so when they asked me the rules i sent them the 180 page pdf the Wizards have on there website for free but (not unexpectedly) it confused them and bored them because its... well it's 180 pages. so I managed to go through this along with the player handbook and the dm guide and created and much simpler version of the rules that are mainly just copy and pasted from the basic notes with some references here and there with page numbers https://mobdro.bio/.
The problem …imo…with giving the basic rules to players is that it has a bunch of DMG and MM stuff that makes the whole doc overwhelming for noobs. Share this with them, which is just the PHB subset of the basic rules, up through level 6….WAY more digestible.
Honestly, I’d recommend sending a link to the Basic Rules on this site over a PDF; they’re free to access and much better geared towards “here’s what a new player needs to design and run their character”

This.👆And the “Basic Rules” on DDB also includes the SRD content, but you can still tell people they only need to worry about chapters 1-6. More content, less confusion, still free, and fully interactive here on DDB to make character building easy.
