Is there anyway to get Dual Wielder, Charger, and Alert as a level 3 half-elf monk (way of the Open Hand)? I can't see it, but I'm told I just don't understand the game.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I started playing D&D from the basic box set in 1979.
Some DMs will house rule adding a free feat at 1st level, and variant humans and custom lineages can come with a free feat, but I've never seen or heard of anyone that would willingly allow 3 feats by 3rd level, especially not by a half elf. certain backgrounds from more recent publications also include specific feats, but to my knowledge, not any of the ones that you're asking about.
maybe the DM is particularly generous? I wouldn't allow it, but I can't speak for everyone else.
The unarmed fighting style is a trap for monks. Better to just use a Quarterstaff. Most of the perks one gets from that feat are things the monk will eventually get on their own anyway, and the rest rely on a moderate-high Strength, which most Monks aren’t built for. Better to take the thrown weapon fighting style and have a half decent ranged attack option.

True but it depends on the campaign. level 11 is long wait for 1d8 damage. I suppose it might balance out if the Monk has high dex bonus for damage.

No free feats from the DM to my knowledge; If so, it was only for that character. I looked at the custom lineage, but then the character wouldn't have had the racial ability bonuses that the character had since it changes those to +2 in one stat.

So if someone is telling you they have those three feats at level 3 they are up to some shady sh*t
I’m just assuming it is someone else who has these. I would ask them to explain it to you since “I'm told I just don't understand the game.” If this was possible it would be on every optimizer’s YouTube channel out there.
As far as I can tell you can only get one of those by 3rd level. The backgrounds that give Feats don't give those.
Question, why would you want dual wielder? Better to take Fighting Initiate and get Unarmed Fighting style so your punches do 1d8 damage.
Possibly for the armor class? I'm really just here to see if the build is legit. I can't replicate in the character builder, but there are a lot of people here and maybe they could see what I'm missing.
This started when I asked a player how he got three feats at third level. Since I hadn't seen that before I would like to be able to use it in future builds. Custom build was the answer given but I pointed out how that didn't work, (assuming he meant custom lineage) since he still had the racial traits, although those were also incorrect since it the character had a +3 dex and +1 wis for racial bonuses.

Well, with a “custom build” they could have every feat in the game at level 1 if they don’t mind cheating and the DM is ok with it. But as far as you e explained it, it is not legit in any way. Again, unless the DM gave their blessing. And would involve homebrew because official rules don’t support it. And if I was playing with someone that did this kind of thing I would seriously consider running and finding another group
Now if they are using the current UA playtest rules you could get Alert as part of your background but it’s different than the 2014 version. And one via Custom lineage (don’t recall if UA human gets a feat). But not sure if the other two feats are UA 1st level ones. They might be behind the level 4 requirements so would t apply to that 3rd level character anyway

That’s why I wrote to use a Quarterstaff (or spear), you’re at 1d8 damage at 1st level right there, no waiting required.

The only ones I might take that fighting style is for subclasses that focus on unarmed like mercy or astral, but even then probably wouldn’t. You could switch it for Blind Fighting at 12 if you did take it.
And 1DD is upping the unarmed damage so even less of a reason to take it then.

OP said Open Hand, Flurry of Blows would use 1d8 if they took Fighting Initiate instead of 1d4. But again, good stats would make up for it.

It seems evident the player the OP mentioned was likely cheating or at least using homebrew rules by the DM.
For anyone else reading and curious:
Variant Human (PHB) and Custom Lineage (TCoE) are races that start with a feat of your choice.
There are various backgrounds from different books that allow a character to start with a specific feat. The One D&D playtest included rules for a custom background that granted a free feat, but it is worth mentioning that the One D&D playtests will be bringing back "level-locked" feats, so only certain selections will be available - my guess is the half-ASI feats will be unavailable for starting with.
Officially you can only start with 2 feats. It is a common houserule that characters may start with a bonus feat - but this is DM dependent and not an official rule.

So, max is 2 until level 4.
I don't think he was cheating. I just think his choices were incorrect.

But a d8 damage dice is not actually particularly stronger than a d6. It's 1 point of damage on average. Sure it'd be nice to have, but the trade off for Monks isn't worth it; you already want to get at least a +2 in both DEX and WIS for AC and features, and ideally at least +1 in CON to give a little staying power if you draw aggro. Unarmed Fighting Style is separate from Martial Arts, so you can't use DEX with it, so you'd then need to get STR up as well. If you want to be an Unarmed STR, use a Fighter or Barbarian as the base template.

DDB character sheets have the option for a player to add any number of feats to their sheet without any prerequisites. He declined to post his character because we all would have seen that's what they did. Just because the functionality exists doesn't mean you have permission to use it; they cheated.
