I’m seeking a rules clarification regarding the Homunculus Servant infusion for the Artificer (from Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything / Eberron: Rising from the Last War).
One of my players argues that they share a telepathic link with their Homunculus Servant and can perceive through its senses, similar to the version found in the Monster Manual or the Find Familiar spell.
However, looking at the stat blocks, I see two distinct entities:
The Monster Manual Homunculus (CR 0): Has the "Telepathic Bond" trait, allowing it to convey what it senses to its master telepathically within the same plane.
The Artificer’s Homunculus Servant (Infusion) (from Tasha Book): Its stat block does not list the "Telepathic Bond" trait. It only states that it "understands the languages you speak" and obeys your commands.
My questions are:
Are these two considered completely different entities regarding their abilities?
Does the Artificer’s Homunculus Servant lack any form of telepathic communication or sensory sharing by RAW (Rules As Written)?
If there is no telepathy, how is an Artificer supposed to receive scouting reports from the servant (considering it can understand languages but cannot speak)?
I want to make sure I’m not stripping away a core class feature, but I also want to avoid giving the Artificer a "telepathic drone" that bypasses the limitations of the Find Familiar spell.

Yes, they're two totally separate and unrelated entities that happen to share a single word in their name. They do not have anything to do with each other.
That version of the Homunculus Servant does not have any telepathic capabilities or sensory sharing. If it did, the stat block would say so.
There is nothing saying the Homunculus Servant can't speak.
It should be noted that the 5.5e version of the Homunculus Servant (which is a Artificer-exclusive spell, rather than an infusion) does have telepathy that works only with its owner, and does not speak any normal languages. But the 5e version from Tasha's and the 5e Eberron books does not have this capability.
Thank you so much for this very clear and detailed answer!
I really appreciate the distinction you made between the 5e (Tasha) and the 2024 (5.5e) versions. It turns out my group has indeed transitioned to the 2024 rules, and your explanation perfectly highlights why my player was insisting on the telepathic link.
Since the 2024 version of the Homunculus Servant explicitly includes Telepathy (1 mile), I will definitely allow it at my table. It’s a game-changer for scouting Axeholm, but at least now I have the official ruling to back it up!
Thanks again for your time and for clearing up the confusion between the different versions of the stat block. Happy gaming!
Also, unlike standard familiars, it can attack. And it can attack and do commands from the artificer without the artificer burning an action, bonus action, or attack.
By the way, you are mistaken — the 2024 Monster Manual Homunculus appears to have been critically nerfed. The “can magically convey what it senses to its master” clause has been removed from the Telepathic Bond trait. That appears to me to mean that it is no longer effectively unlimited planar scrying, but unlimited planar telepathy (communication).

Yes, which is why I started with “by the way…”.
If, as the OP states, they really have transitioned to 2024 rules, then a base premise of the original question itself is now wrong.
