I don't know about the particular instance the OP has to deal with, but I came across this thread in my attempt to make a Wrestler. Goliath & Human are the top 2 choices for this and I Brawny is, at least in my opinion, a necessity for this build because of Expertise in having toAthletics without multiclass into Rogue.
I believe the standard rule is that such things stack unless come from the same trait (such as two castings of a spell).
However, the terminology used here makes things very... technical.
See, both the feat and the racial ability mention that you count as one size larger for the purpose of determining carrying capacity.
What I read in that is that it doesn't count as any kind of increase for the purpose of determining feat or racial ability results. The racial ability goes "Your size is M. It counts as L for carrying capacity (and pushing etc)". The feat goes "Your size is (still) M. It counts as L for carrying capacity."
I suspect there will be a clarification, one way or another, when/if Brawny makes it official, about how it stacks with similar traits, but without such to clarify intent I'm more willing to assume the intent is for those traits not to stack cleanly.
As a DM, I'd give a Brawny Goliath an additional bonus to carrying capacity, but not an entire size category larger (to Huge).
Totally agreed. As written, both say You count as one size larger. Your size stays the same. Therefore you always count a Large creature for determining the carrying capacity.
This is correct. The abilities have different names, but the same effect. You count as one size larger when calculating your carrying capacity. Note that Powerful Build also affects your push/drag/lift capacity while Brawny does not. Also note that either of these abilities WILL stack with Aspect Of The Bear from a Lvl 6 Totem Barbarian. That ability explicitly says your capacity is doubled, not that you count as one size larger. So the doubling would occur on top of the increase from Powerful Build.
Where are you getting those modifiers from? Large creatures don't get +4 attack bonus or -4 stealth (because flat modifiers aren't a thing in D&D) and very few large humanoids have 10 ft. reach.
Guys the answer is simple, Just make the Goliath a Large Creature plain and simple. Give them all the positives and negatives that comes with that. -1ac, +4 Special Att mod, -4 Stealth, 10ft space, 10ft reach. It fits the rules and comes with a trade-off for being that big. Let the big boys get huge!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, that does not fit the rules at all. Please cite where you're getting this information from, as none of that is in any of the rulebooks.
There are no PC races which default the character to being size large; none. Even the Centaur & Loxodon are limited to size medium for PCs.
You don't know what fear is until you've witnessed a drunk bird divebombing you while carrying a screaming Kobold throwing fire anywhere and everywhere.
Enlarge is a 2nd lv spell so "There are no PC races which allow the character to be size large; none." is wrong.
That's not what they said though, you're misquoting which is unfair. They said
"There are no PC races which default the character to being size large; none."
Enlarge is a spell that can temporarily make a creature larger, and only a 3rd level duergar gets that as a racial option once per day. It's not their default state.
Your comment was rebutting being large as a racial trait. I'm aware enlarge/reduce is a second level spell, I was pointing out only duergar can cast it as a racial spell meaning they're the only race who can temporarily become large as an innate ability, but still, not permanently.
Enlarge/reduce on its own has nothing to do with PC races being large by default.

While I think you're right, consider a goliath society (not a human-based society); in a large number of giants, there should be some brawny goliath capable of carrying far more than your average goliath in comparison.
Yup, the ones with a higher STR stat. :)
.... that logic applies to Humans as well as to Goliaths.
I just want to say that some of you are using a strength score of 20. I would like to introduce the belts of giant strength into the equation.
All of the Belts Of Giant Strength that increase one's Str modifier above +5 are Very Rare items, so counting on getting one is iffy. Not that my Goliath Rune Knight wouldn't LOVE one, mind you. :)
Plus, adding Belts Of Giant Strength doesn't change the math, it just stretches the math. All of the doubling effects from size changes, feats & class abilities just scale accordingly.
And to those asking why someone would want to max out their carry and/or lift capacity...there may not be any distinct combat advantages, but it's amazing how many ways you can make use of Being Able To Lift Really Heavy Things. Just go watch The Princess Bride again and see how useful it was to have Fezzik around :)
I once played a Goliath Rouge/theif named Valeo with the brawny feat. He got his start in the business by robbing someone that veterans of the theives guild had been trying to rob for years but of the few people that had gotten past all the security no one could ever crack the safe. Valeo hired some people to start a commotion at the front of the building then with his maul broke down the outside wall into the safe room picked up the safe and ran off with it. I made him specifically tall enough to be borderline large and my dm would punish him make it so he had trouble getting into doorways and no inns ever had beds large enough for him and any other time he figured being so large would be a hindrance. I also consistently rolled incredible stealth rolls. It was one of the best characters I ever played because of how outrageous it was at times. I once stealthed in an open field on a full moon by pulling a grey cloke over and sitting really still they thought I was a Boulder. Then he drown in a lake getting caught in some seaweed? Lakegrass? Idk whatever plants grow on lake bottoms. Three natural 1's In a row on a Deng STR check.

So, then, why have the feat at all ...?
