Been having a discussion with my DM about exactly how temporary hit points work in regards to damage reducing effects and resistance.
Since I can't find anything definitive about exactly when damage is calculated, we are confused about this statement from the PHB regarding temporary hit points:
"When you have temporary hit points and take damage, the temporary hit points are lost first, and any leftover damage carries over to your normal hit points." - PHB, Combat CH. 9
The word "first" is what we are a bit confused about. Does this mean that the damage is taken first to temporary hit points before any effects such as heavy armor master and resistance effects take effect? Or is damage calculated first with all of these factors in play, then the damage is taken?
On the same topic, do temporary hit points even benefit from damage reducing effects like heavy armor master or resistance? Since they are described as such below:
"Temporary hit points aren't actual hit points; they are a buffer against damage, a pool of hit points that protect you from injury." - PHB, Combat CH. 9

Any help clarifying this would be appreciated!
Resistance and damage reduction applies for temporary hit points as well.
Example:
You have 10 temp hp, take 30 damage with resistance. Your temp hp will be gone and the 5 remaining will carry over.
